A fine looking bike for sure! Here is a tip for the high level S pipes: leave a little play between the pipes an the mufflers , don‘t overthighten the clamps . The exhaut system needs some play. I already broke three left hand pipes on my 1970 S type .The headlight has the correct diameter but I guess your friend has no upper struts installed that‘s why the headlamp wiggles around . There should be some threads on the underside of the top yoke were they are attached.

The OEM high pipes dyno tested better than any of the factory pipes. The "Norton Gang" guys used them on their production class racers that dominated West Coast production racing in 1968, '69 and '70. I had two Commando's, a '69 Fastback, and then a '70 Roadster that I hot rodded with compression, cam and Commando S pipes. I obtained one of the original Lockheed disc/caliper as used on the Production Racer, and it was much more powerful than the lter, standard, Norville disc's. A Broyer electronic ignition worked well. With a 21 tooth countershaft sprocket (geared for speed, and lower rpm highway cruising) I turned a 12.17 quarter mile at Fremont Dragstrip in 1973.

Mike, the owner, is obviously a true Norton tinkerer, in the best sense. He clearly loves his lifestyle and Norton hobby/passion. Fun video.

My first Norton was a red 1969 Commando 'S' I bought in 1970, fresh out of the Navy. Oh the joy of ripping through the Colorado front range back in those days and racing at the local drag strip, back when drag strips were almost as common as airports.

Wonderful to see British bikes of the 60/70s still running. Perfectly usable on todays roads.... with limitations. 🚀

I remember years ago seeing an interview with Clint Eastwood. Near the end of the interview he mounts his Norton, an original S type, and is filmed riding around the environs of Carmel (probably 17 Mile Drive). The interview was done by a French woman, not Barbara Walters.

    Wonderful old Commando.
I can remember exactly when and where I saw my first Norton Commando in Summer of 1969. Had to have one and succeeded with the quest. But a few years ago I sold the 1970 Roadster for an irresistible offer.

I've owned three S model Commandos over the years. I love their looks. As another commenter noted, Mike should invest in a pair of the mounting struts that attach the headlight to the upper triple tree before the headlight falls off.

Mike's got some sweet motorcycles. I'm normally not a fan of high pipes but they look great on this bike. They give it a whole different vibe.

I had a Triumph Tiger Trail 1982 which a mechanic made up a set of high pipes made up for. It came in a bright yellow paint with black lettering. Adding a breadbox tank in place of the teardrop tank gave the bike a much better range.

Dana -- I have a set of those pipes that I was running on my Commando Production Racer in the 1970s (I had owned an "S" in 1969 - 70 and knew that they were good pipes and I was running out of ground clearance with the low-level exhaust system; I was really more looking to solve the ground clearance problem but one I started running them, I remembered how good they were). I was working at the California distribution office in 1974 - 75 and I bought them out of the factory stock -- I have every reason to think that they were original "S" pipes, as the motorcycles had been built from the factory.
You might not know but starting with the "Roadster" model Commandos (mid-1970 onwards), the mufflers were straight-through with louvers in the center pipe and fiberglass packing in the mufflers. The set of "S" mufflers that I have have a set of plain, flat baffles in them. The power is better than any other set of Commando pipes I've ever used and the sound is beautifully rich and thick. If you examine them, you see that they're different from any other Commando exhaust and the power delivery and sound is different, entirely for the best!
I'm guessing that Mike's "S" has original pipes because it sounds so good!

Very nice. The early bikes had that beautiful heavy metal flake paint that just popped in the sunlight. Unfortunately at the time, they didn't have UV inhibitors in the paint, so they faded easily, if not looked after properly.

I'm bent!! back in the late '70s we could only get stuff from domi racer which a lot of was junk !! The boss finally got a Wassel order in(biggggg crate) but that was gone in a heartbeat !! This vid has recently ordered new Norton parts ?!

The headlight is wobbly because he is missing the left and right brackets that attach the headlight to the top triple tree. Without those he will surely break the bottom tabs on that pricey halo ring.

Hi Mike! Please help. RGM Norton automatic non return valve: Would you recommend this valve for this common wet sump problem for Harley Evolutions? I tried to ask RGM Norton but they said that they said that they do not know about Harleys. But i just could not see how it is works??? Thank you George from Hungary

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  2 роки тому +2

Hi George, my personal opinion is that I would not fit an anti-sump valve into my bikes. I just don’t like them myself. A lot of guys think they are great and have come up with some ingenious solutions including micro switches that prevent the bike from being started without turning on the valve. However in my experience, I would rather recirculate or replace the old oil that makes its way into the sump than fit an anti-sump valve. I guess I’m too nervous about t the consequences of forgetting about it or if it were to fail. Sorry I can’t be of more help. Perhaps the guys can jump in on this conversation.
