It's not the whole US. It's actually pretty state dependent. Here in wisconsin, houses are reasonable, and rent isn't bad at all, but you try to look at the same houses in california, Florida, and a lot of East Coast states, then you're looking at damn near triple the prices.
@ here in NC rent was around 500-1100 for a studio/two bedroom in 2019. In less than 5 years it shot up to 1200-2400. Now I have seen some sympathizers who have gone out their way to rent rooms in their own houses for around 125 a week to 600 a month due to this huge change. I just never imagined this many people would move here and buy up property so fast and build so fast that it would literally change the look as well because before you could go out and not see any trash in the streets. Now everywhere I go, people are just tossing trash out windows like they don’t even care.
@ also to note the shelters are now so full that you will see tons of people without places to live walking the streets and within the last year, we have seen more and more living under underpasses on the main highways.
Considering the wealth disparity between the wealthy and everyone else, arguably there is no middle class left anymore; either you're ultra-rich or slaves to same, with as few rights and protections as their lawyers can strip from us.

While yes it's TRUE that we have a multi-party system, the two traditionally dominant parties are Fianna Fail and Fine Gael, who have combined held government since the rebirth of our nation. Sinn Fein have made a huge gain this election but they simply won't be able form a government. In practice, this means that FF and FG will form a government together as they have done, and it's just a continuation. As they've shared their power in government the two parties have shifted more towards each other policy-wise hence the notion that they are becoming more and more the same.
