"needing to work your way up from the bottom" is a good life lesson to teach a kid when they are young and inexperienced. For an adult child that already has a lucrative job someplace else, asking them to leave and start over as if they don't have any life experience is just an excuse to try and not pay them because "family should help each other out"
So pp😊😊
Indeed
Exactly!!!!
fuck that shit
I think this is correct.
Sounds like he's working 12 hour days doing 3 seperate jobs, delivery driving, bookeeping, and mechanic! Minimum should be getting 70k for that if not more.
Dad said "See how it works out." It's not working out, Dad.
Facts. My dad had the same situation he made 40k a year started working with the family and makes 20k a year😡😡😡
My dad hired my mom to be his small business secretary. She never wanted to work, wanted to stay home, do needlework and jigsaw puzzles. Mom messed up receivables (accepted deliveries without checking if all items were delivered, taking down wrong information on phone calls, etc). Dad finally sent mom back home, and hired an elderly woman who kicked butt and was his perfect secretary. Mom got good at finishing 5,000 piece puzzles until she became very sick and disabled.
Ya not everyone wants to work. Sounds like mom didn’t like it
My dad is proud that I managed to get out of our family business. From his view, we worked so hard the past 2 generations and me/my job are moving us to the next "Tier" of society.
For shame on the parents who use their children for their own benefit
I think it should be the goal that if kids get hired by their parents, that they become competent enough to be able to putgrow the business, consider they do want to step up!
I've build my mothers clinic with her as in, she took the financial risks and put in the first administrative steps to get our clinic and infrastructure and I took us from there to where we are now if it comes to managing the clinic, so she can "just" focus on being a doctor without another boss to have to answer to. I love my jobs and plan to take over once she retires and paying her out, but if I wanted to, I could actually step up by becoming a clinic manager of a bigger clinic / hospital for sure by now (not one with about 7 employees. And she'd be more than happy and proud for me if that was what I truly wanted!
he's getting taken advantage of. for parents to do that is disgusting.
Dave doesn't get into it but doing mechanical work is seriously skilled labor and worth a lot more than this barely livable wage.
I wonder how Dad feels about his 27 year old son being more successful then HIS family business. May need some truth serum for that one.
your dad is using you for cheap labour if your doing invoicing and maintenance as well as driving, you can get more for less work somewhere else. this is basically just a guilt trip to line his pockets
If you're
Indeed🎉
Family or not you don't ever ever take a 50% pay cut. At any stage in life you should be moving up not down. Why is it that your dad instead of giving 10% increase of your previous salary offered 50% reduction. If you can't afford someones salary than it's not a business but a hobby.
I’d tell my Dad I can’t live on that. I made $83,000 and I’m not being paid enough. I’m going to get a job equivalent to my old salary.
Exactly. Usually if you ask someone to quit their job and come and work at your company you start by matching their previous wage, if not increasing it. Just because it's your son should be no different.
I don’t always agree with Dave, but he is spot on with this one
The dad is taking advantage. What is often said in these situations is "oh, but one day all this will be yours." Yeah, he is buying it in the meantime thru being underpaid, and just maybe the business will be profitable at the time that he inherits it.
Or dad waste it all on imported wives
Parents will definitely sell it for retirement. I've seen this kind of parent before sadly
"doesn't mean you get underpaid because you're the boss's son"
The dad hired him to help do mid-level work and pays him less than those who are technically "at the bottom." He's simply being taken advantage of. Dad's getting cheap labor because its family.
He doesnt even really know what's going on with the business; so God forbid, he continues working there and it goes under. He would have been severely underpaid AND have nothing to inherit. Lose, lose.
He makes less and works longer hours. I'm not seeing how this is a great deal. 😅
For the dad😂😂😂😂😂🎉
I wish I made that my family doesn't make that much
@@AieMem67What? You don’t even make 40k a year? Wow. I make 100k a year and I feel like that isn’t enough.
Owner’s son get’s paid for the job he does. Not one penny more or one penny less. Great advice.
So many horror stories on Ramsey are caused by family drama.
Dad views him as a stupid kid, and dad will always view him as a stupid kid.
His family is taking advantage of him
His naivety at this level in his career shows what his work was like leading up to it
Yeah, those drivers should be paid 25 an hr as well as 401k with up to 5% match and insurance plans.
Yes, they need to have a conversation about expectations.
However, there is ZERO chance that conversation will happen as Dave suggests. It is way too blunt.
The family is ripping the dude off under the guise this will be yours one day.
The first question is how much would i be making. Idc if its family or not. It dont make sense if your making 50% less your salary just bc your family.
Go find another job, show them the offer. They match or you go.
I'm confused. What parent knowingly has their child leave a job for the "family business" knowing they're only going to pay them half of what they were making in their prior job. How is that being a parent? That's not any kind of parent I had in my life. Thank God.
Darn- it sounds like dad and mom are not taking very good care of their son! Wow.
Leave quickly. Be your own man and establish yourself independent of your parents. Parents are having him do a lot of the overflow stuff that a lead would do without paying him for the work or even close to pay that it competitive with his previous job. Also, if they wanted to start him on the family business, they would hav done so years ago. They would be actively showing him the books and numbers instead of keeping him out of that loop. Luring him away from a good paying job/career to pay him half as much is pretty telling.
Dang, with a dad like that, who needs enemies?
The question here is does he live at home for free?
Mechanic makes much more than driver or bookkeeper.
There is 'starting at the bottom' and it seems, starting below the bottom (at least as far as salary). The "someday this will be all yours" is a line to excuse the under paying. For the hours he is working, he is being ripped off. I suspect that the father believes owners should take minimal out of the business unless profitable, but with the missing step that the son is not yet an owner.
So how profitable is the business? If it is barely scraping by, then there is unlikely to be anything to take over.
This is an easy conversation. I would just go to my mom or dad and say I don’t make enough money. I’m out of here because you’re willing to pay strangers more than your own son and I’m doing 3 jobs bye bye 👋
I hope this young man has seen the light and movedd on.
Love mom and dad but live them from a distance in terms of business interaction.
careful when there are narcisists running the business, keeping you in with.guilt trips. Run
I just found it weird that a father takes advantage of his own son while giving his wife a salary she doesnt work for.
Sounds like Dad is taking advantage of his son and expecting the family relationship to take care of the gaps.
The problem here is you just move those gaps into your relationship and thats where rifts start.
What Dave said!
He needs a job description that specifies what skills he is using and experience in those skills, and get paid accordingly. Doesn't matter what other employees are making, but they should have job descriptions too.
21.00 an hr is 43k a year so he's not making less than other truck drivers. Also in our family business I pay my son very well and if we are short my paycheck is the first thing I cut. My son is half owner and I can't imagine working with anyone else. He's definitely not as committed as me but he's really a great driver
Rachel did not start at the bottom
Yeah generally shares of the business are considered a form of compensation. But dave hates math and loves semantics
He never said she started the bottom. He said they make equal pay structure as her peers.
@@lalomadrid5943 ANd he also said, family should start at the bottom.
@@lalomadrid5943 so they all have an ownership stake? Because that's compensation. So if they don't, which they don't, the compensation structure is not equal. Listen for reality rather than rhetoric
He making half and doing more. 😂
Well put Dave! Very black and white strategy that will help this kid out wishing him the best!
Should have called Dave 1st because ur DAD asked an awful lot and took advantage of you.
Dad using son for slave labor.. make it make sense 🤔🧐
The only way this would make since is if he had some equity. If not, this is a BAD DEAL!
This is my fear realized. My dad also want me to join but cutting my paycheck in half? Hyperventilating
So the drivers make 19 and hour. In a 40 hour week, that is 40k a year.
How much do I make at $28 an hour?
@@BREEZYM6015 $58,240 / year assuming no overtime and you work 40 hours per week.
@@BREEZYM6015 28 x 40 x 52
Sounds to me as though these parents are taking advantage of their son. They want him to do just as much work as the dad and far more than the mom but they get all of the profit!
With a family like that, who needs enemies?!?!
how are they finding drivers at $21 an hour? even in Birmingham that is weak
That’s the industry standard
Dad's taking advantage.
Pathetic.
He just needs to get on a path to take over ownership in the business.
Is this young man going to "inherit" this family business? It sounds like from the variety of his job responsibilities that maybe this is his learning apprenticeship as an "investment" in his future? Ask his parents for a raise and soon. Does his mother run the household, take care of the meals, chores, and all the rest? Maybe she has unseen medical issues as well.
My mom did all the cooking and cleaning at home - she did not get to be on the payroll of my dad! The calllers mom should not be on payroll for doing nothing while they underpay their adult son!!
He has no profit sharing in the business. He has no ownership
More likely the kid figured out how to leverage his access to Ramsey.
Why in the world leave a job making $80k for one making half that..stupid decision..should’ve told Dad you expected $80k working Daddys little job before you ever took the position!
Anyone calling a talk show host for life advice is already lost.
What does that make you window shopping here? Living up to your name.
@@WillParker322 When I call a talk show host asking for advice THEN you can pop off. Don't worry fanboy, Dave Ramsey will show you how to get rich! Bwahahaha!
Dave can’t do math. Drivers get $19-$21 per hour. $20x40x52=$41,600 per year. Caller makes $45k. He makes more than the drivers and he gets to sit around in the air conditioned office a big part of the day. He’s well paid for what he’s doing.
The thing you are forgetting is that he also does invoicing & mechanics.
What is he getting paid for the extra work?
@@quiltkid2655 He does the driving job only part-time and then does a little invoicing and does some mechanic stuff as needed. He’s doing less work altogether than the drivers who do that all day and he’s getting paid more.
He’s driving 8 hours a day then he comes in and does the desk work. He’s working 12 hour days. Way over 40 hour weeks.
@@debbie7771yup he is a full time driver plus the other duties.
@@BusArch42 Wrong. He drives a few hours in the morning, then he hangs around in the office. He’s way overpaid for what he does because he’s the boss’ kid.
80k is NOT lucrative
What an incredibly privileged thing to say…
He is probably slacking! Parents tend to pay their kids more. He needs to go out on his own and earn a living.
That's an insane take!
He's preparing invoices, driving, dealing with customers...
The whole business setup sounds like a joke.
Mom is 'around'. Pathetic.
This kid already proved he's worth over $80k a year to somebody else... I'd advise he go do it.
I'd bet anything his dad is turning over $3m... and spending about $3m. That'll be the problem.
@@saelaird No! He didn't prove anything. Would you quit an $80k job to go make $40k?
@@saelaird Mom is part owner!! It's not the "helps" place to decide what she does or doesn't do. That's how you know he is a slacker.
I own rental homes. My son has a job making great money. It would be crazy for him to quit his job to make half of that to help me manage real estate. It would also be crazy for him to decide what I do for my business and what I chose to pay others to do.
@@saelaird Dad drives occasionally when someone calls out. Dad does invoices!!!! Dad also has Manager overseeing the financials of the business. So, why does he stop at 330 to do a job that 2 others are already doing? That's when I knew he was slacking. He is going to the office to shoot the chit instead of making deliveries. His parents see this and don't pay him as much as the guy out there busting azz.
@@saelaird The son wants more money to be the slacker. He has already mentioned pay to his parents. It's time for him to get a job on his own. You know the one where he was unhappy because he was expected to do what the other employees do. Invoices aren't a full time job. Dad is just keeping a check on the business and his paid manager. Dad is trying to hire more drivers to relieve himself from driving. So he and Mom can enjoy life. They are business owners....not employees. They need to make things clear to their son.
Dave is making stuff up again…
How so?
Dave is an asshat and always have been
Thanks Dad!
Don't feed the trolls.
And yet you’ve failed miserably to point out a single thing he made up. 😂
His Dad is a scammer.
Is he living at home, Mom's doing the cleaning, cooking, laundry, etc? He's getting an allowance every week, a pretty good 'allowance' but an allowance. Of course, he's also learning the business as Dad sees it, preparing to take over some day. Things have changed Dad, your little boy isn't mowing the lawn and taking the trash out for movie money any more. Give him a professional 'contract' and pay if he's actually doing the jobs but if he's still only worth carrying out the trash - have a come to Jesus talk.
A man who doesn't know what a P & L is has a LOT to learn about the business side of this company before he can be a real asset to it. I think he should stick to just driving for a while and spend some time learning how the company actually runs. However, he should make what the other truck drivers are making. I don't know how his father convinced him to work for less than what others doing the same job are making.
You wont know what you're not taught
Even if the work was horrible he could’ve gotten another job making more than that and not working for his dad. He’s getting screw over.
An older person with experience who was already earning 80k doesnt need to "start at the bottom." Young adults who are just starting out at life - they start from the bottom. But this guy already had a career. He already "started" years ago.
I'm really like listening to Dave deal with family business problems. He gives really good advice. He's funny too! :)
He's not getting any consideration in his paycheck family, so why should he stay away from a job that pays him double, to work a job in consideration of family?
Mom is getting consideration sitting on her butt doing nothing. They are giving him no consideration, so why is HE the ONLY sacrificing anything?
Sounds like he's being taken advantage of.
Starting at the bottom does not apply to someone leaving a good paying job. No need to get personal, just tell them you want to take a job that pays at least what you earned before. If they value you, they will pay.
A Financial Planner told me Saving at least 15% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. How can take advantage of compound interest and potentially grow your retirement savings overtime?
In times like this it is better to seek help from a professional as such key decisions are better guided by experts with market experience.
That is exactly the reason I stopped trusting the financial advice of UA-camrs; in the long run, I only end up with a jumbled collection of stocks and bonds. Whereas all I needed to earn over $350k in less than two years was guidance from a true market expert.
Thanks for replying, That's a very impressive return, You must have a good idea of stocks. How did you go about it?
I just ran a search with her name out of curiosity and came across her web page, I wrote her an email hope she replies soon.
I make 60k working full-time four days a week. No complaints here.
