Why is Gravity Falls So Popular?

  • About 10 days prior to when this video was posted, Gravity Falls turned 11 years old. That's quite insane for me to think about considering that I was 11 years old when I first started watching it. Despite its age though, the show is still very popular with more people recognizing it more than ever. But what made it so special compared to other shows that came before and after it?

I do love Amphibia and the Owl House, but Gravity Falls was the series that started this era of great Disney animated shows, and is the series that started the possible multiverse that connects it to Amphibia and the owl house. Not to mention that Matt Braly and Dana Terrence did work with Alex Hirsch on Gravity Falls. Having these three working together on Gravity Falls seemed to make it all the more special, and Gravity Falls was already a good show with memorable and lovable characters. I love Gravity Falls!

Agreed Whilst Amphibia was more complex and the characters have more nuance. We wouldn’t have Amphibia, Owl House, or Molly McGee if it wasn’t for the success of Gravity Falls. Truly we don’t give Gravity Falls enough credit, the series that inspired the Disney Multiverse.

4:41 I have to confess, but despite the Owl House being cut short, Dana Terrace and the crew didn’t have full Season 3 draft made for that season, which is why the montage in Thanks to Them and even the Collector’s favorite games in Watching and Dreaming were actually montages and not originally planned episodes before the cancellation.
Not to mention that Season 3 was not originally planned to be the final season of that show.

No one is ever going to recreate the absolute MASTERPIECE that is Gravity Falls. Even fans who are just discovering the show today can't come close to the same experience that we got as fans during its original run. And why? Because
*Gravity Falls is not just a show; it is an experience!*
The series itself was only a tiny part of what made Gravity Falls so special. The rest was the fandom.
Seriously, the coded messages in the credits were just the beginning. Gravity Falls's online fandom had... *spirited* discussions about not just the show's biggest mystery (the author's identity) but literally EVERYTHING ELSE.
If you went to the Gravity Falls subreddit you could always count on seeing theories you never would have thought of on your own.
Entire UA-cam channels dedicated themselves (shout out to Vailskibum94 and The Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel!) entirely to Discovering, Decoding, and Protecting the Secrets of Gravity Falls. They put out theory videos every week, even throughout the year long hiatus between seasons. The ROOTHM had live meetings where we would discuss Gravity Falls, face to face, with other fans.
The Mystery of Gravity Falls set up a stream where those of us who didn't have Disney XD could watch episodes as they aired, and discuss them with other fans on the stream. When that stream was taken down a few hours before ATOTS aired, they quickly set up another stream, only for that one to be taken down as well. But then they quickly set up a third stream on their own website (which itself is mainly a code cracking site as well as its own piece of the puzzle -- literally gave coordinates in Oregon that Alex Hirsch had to dispel myths of them being the location of Gravity Falls), that proved to be long lasting as the page still exists today. Alex Hirsch even posted a picture of himself and his crew watching that stream.
We had no idea which fan theories were true and which ones were false. And just when you thought a theory was totally debunked, the show would give you a crumb of hope that it might be real. Every single frame of every single episode was (literally) analyzed up, down and backwards to find every conceivable clue that could be hidden in it -- so much so that we were finding "imaginary breadcrumbs" wherever we looked. And the crew actually reacted to some of it in real time.
When an episode aired, it became a race against time to figure out every secret in that episode and every conceivable way it could connect to any other content that ever was, or ever would be, made for Gravity Falls (or anything else for that matter, shout out to The Sqoou). Prior to each episode premiere, it was customary to watch the entire series to that point to ensure it was fresh in our memories.
It wasn't just the episodes either. Every time we got a short, or a commercial, a 15-second episode teaser, a 30-second trailer, a Reddit AMA with Alex, Bill, or Mike Rianda, or any merchandise at all, we would gobble it up and then beg for more like a hungry cat. Every short, every commercial, every teaser, every trailer, every book, every game, every audio recording, every AMA answer, and everything else we got was treated with the same level of scrutiny we gave to the episodes themselves. Imagine any other show having a secret society dedicated to it. Imagine any other show having three hour long discussions within that secret society, regarding 15 second teasers that we knew would get a 30 second trailer two days later, and the full episode a week after that. Imagine any other show having an entire Used-To-Be-About-History-Channel-esque series of videos within that secret society about a single Reddit AMA. But, that was Gravity Falls, and we loved it!
And of course, all that extra stuff had mysteries of its own to share. I first got into the world of decoding Gravity Falls when I played the online game Fright Night. When you beat the game it gives you the following message: "BRX DUH WKH JWHDWHVW PBVWHUB KXQWHU!" (And I didn't copy that off the wiki, I encoded it again myself because they used the same code as the first six episodes.) There was a huge worldwide treasure hunt known as the Cipherhunt a few years ago, with Bill still on display to this day at Confusion Hill in Northern California. The ROOTHM (which was named after a banner in another online game, "Mystery Shack Mystery") had codes in their videos every week, and even ranks within the organization that members could earn through the process of decoding. Every fanmade episode has a secret code in the credits, just like every official episode. Heck, there's even a secret message in my own profile picture related to Gravity Falls.
All this is a very long, winded way of saying: *no show has ever, nor will ever, come close to the level of watching Gravity Falls throughout its original run. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.*

It gave us some thing we had not seen before and some thing we could discuss online. And the rest of the factors were well done. It started the trend of mystery shows as well.
I sort of wish some one on that show could have had a baby so that baby would now be 11 and then brought back in a new series.
If Gravity Falls had kept the humor too safe, or the episodes to status quo or if the animation or voice acting had been too poor or if the plot and characters had been annoying the show would have fallen apart.
Scooby Doo Mystery Inc was a hit for those who followed it but it never drew in non-scooby fans to grow the popularity. Craig of the Creek never lit up the internet. Over the Garden Wall and Infinity Train ran too short. Glitch Techs and Hilda were on Streaming So they all had limited audiences. Star Vs, Amphibia, Owl House, Duck Tales each rode the wave but they also grew more fans by adding LGBT content and racial diversity. They went a step beyond. Alvin and the Chipminks, Smurfs , Jellystone, a few other shows they never drew an audience or a huge fan base. Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titans Go got the hate watchers.
Gravity Falls put every thing in just the right amount to get us. and it stayed alive thanks to online discussions and fan art. If people had not shipped and drawn characters and comics it would have probably faded out by now.
when I look back at older shows , Jackie Chan Adventures, Home Stuck, Dan Vs , Johny Brovo, Secret Saturdays , despite being big at one time never get recommended. But when I or some one recommends cartoons to new viewers Gravity Falls is always on the list.

@@SukunaIsHim Even as someone who is more invested in Gravity Falls (still active in the fandom) and prefers it, I can understand why for some folks, they prefer Amphibia or TOH a bit more. I think everyone in the conversation likes (even loves) all three shows. So at that point, it's just a matter of, which was strongest for you personally. This is why I'm never going to get into a discussion of which show is "better"; I think it's too difficult to determine. When you get down to it, each show has a very different "flavor", and touches on very different themes. Those themes are really strong, and it depends on the person which one resonates the most with t hem.
I do also want to note that one of the biggest differences between the shows, I feel, is the style of humor. Which is interesting, given that all three creators worked together on GF, so there's SOME common sensibilities to their way of doing humor. All three shows blend wacky humor with more serious parts of the plot, too. But they handle the humor just a little differently. In particular, after watching Amphibia and TOH, and then going back to watch GF, it really struck me how different the tone of GF is. Even though Amphibia and TOH had excellent periods set in "our world" (the "real" world), they are really overwhelmingly fantasy shows. Gravity Falls is also a fantasy show, but it's set in the "real" world (or a version thereof). Much, much more of GF's humor feels very contemporary and modern. That's not a value judgement, it's just noting something about the style.
I feel like GF is a bit more sarcastic, and uses a bit more of phrasing, vocabulary, and references that are grounded in our world. And, I actually sort of feel like some of GF's humor (especially in Grunkle Stan) is a bit of a holdover to older types of American TV humor, even going back to 80s sitcoms, or the impact from what has been called "Borscht Belt" comedians. (i.e. the impact of Jewish comedians on humor writing in the 20th c., which created a sort of feel and vocabulary of humor that influenced American TV, both live action and cartoon, into the 70s and 80s.) It's often been noted that while Dipper and Mabel are kids of the 00s, there's a lot of "retro" feel humor and references in GF that are drawn from Alex Hirsch's childhood in the 80s/90s. This meshes with his basing Grunkle Stan pretty closely on his own Jewish grandfather, who was part of that earlier generation from which we get the same Jewish writers bringing distinctive humor voices to film and early TV. Like, I don't think his Grandpa Stan was a contemporary of Mel Brooks, but that's the type of humor I'm talking about. My guess would be that his Grandpa Stan was from the next generation down from Mel Brooks, the Silent Generation, prior to the Boomers. So I'm just saying, this is a context that Alex Hirsch was growing up in and specifically kind of trying to capture in GF, which is, apart from anything else, a nostalgia project for him. Grunkle Stan feels exactly like a knowing pastiche of those older Jewish comedians, and there's good reason for that.
Amphibia and The Owl House, meanwhile, I think lack a good deal of that particular feel. I think TOH has it a little bit more (in Eda in particular), but it surrounds that character with way more of a cast with different humor underpinnings. Amphibia is also pretty clearly a nostalgia project for Matt Braly, but it's nostalgia that comes out of a very different cultural context than Alex Hirsch's. For me, that's one thing that makes Amphibia so strong; it's rooted in a Thai-American upbringing and a "child of immigrants" story (since Anne's parents immigrated from Thailand, so Anne is first-gen). That makes Amphibia super stand out, and I think sometimes people sleep on this aspect of it, but man, it's great. The Owl House's protagonist, meanwhile, is rooted in another ethnicity, although I feel like it derives less direct humor from that ethnic context (while still providing a strong representation of it). None of these three different contexts are superior to each other; they're just part of what give each show a particular flavor.
Sorry. This is a thought I've only had somewhat recently, and I'm still feeling my way around how to put it into words. It's not that Amphibia and TOH don't have a lot of "real" moments for their teens. But in a way, they feel a little more... timeless and fairytale-esque, which goes along great with their fantasy settings? Whereas, then I come back to GF, and I'm like, OH, yeah, this is a show that feels "modern". UGH. Still not getting the right words! Anyway, I don't think that the subtle differences in humor style are what is the strongest factor to anyone's preference for one of the shows over the others. But I do think it subtly influences how people attach to each show, and therefore, to which one they attach to most strongly.
Well! That got long-winded. TL;DR, I'm just saying that when I see someone saying they prefer Amphibia or TOH, or think they're better in some ways than GF, that I can understand how there are reasons underlying that, which make sense.

It's pretty obvious for a few reasons.
    1. A couple more recent shows by Disney are based off on Gravity Falls. Think about it - Amphibia, the Owl House. What do they have in common? It's about people being transported to another place - or another dimension.

To be honest, the one thing I'm surprised he didn't mention was the absolutely WEIRD and random huge hiatuses in Gravity Falls' airing. I mean -- a 2 season show that ran over FOUR YEARS? The show was infamous within its fandom for how random the episode drops could be, and how you never quite knew how long a hiatus it would be, between episodes. (Such as, "Not What He Seems" airing in March of 2015, and its follow-up ep with all of the answers, "A Tale of Two Stans", not airing until July 2015.)
At the same time, there's a strength to shows that air episodically (which Amphibia and TOH did as well): fans get time between episodes to talk to each other, speculate, develop theries, produce fan content, and get hyped for the next one. I feel like that's one of the biggest things lost in a streaming era where an entire season of something gets dumped out at once for people to binge.

Then there's "Bob's Burgers" the showed up on Fox TV in 2011, and continues to make New Jersey proud.;) I kept hearing about "Gravity Falls," but what would draw me to a "Y7 kid's cartoon"? I found a UA-cam reactor's enthusiastic look at episode #1 in early 2023. Then I watched a "mirror/reversed" of episode #1 via a YT viewer who featured full length episodes: ua-cam.com/video/qnSdOgBl8zE/v-deo.html So, in mid-May, 2023, I searched Disney XD for "Gravity Falls" episodes. The Pines twins left for Piedmont, California in late August. I did notice that several episodes hadn't been broadcast, which was interesting. As of this date (August 14, 2023), "Summerween" (Season 1, episode 12), hasn't been broadcast. Is this "too scary for modern audiences"? Or is it, as "episode rankers" say, Sub-Par? Oh well, I can still say something about "Private Vasquez and the Politically Correct Colonial Marines go to Summerween in Gravity Falls" to comment on Disney's "Snow White" (2024). By the way, I don't steam and still "watch Cable TV." (Certain Ethnic TV channels aren't streamed.)
