I'll be buying a 6 speed, Superlight, H bar, Black Edition Brompton and whilst I would hugely enjoy watching it (in it's folded configuration) slowly rotate on it's illuminated base stand (which I'll build) as the masterpiece of design and engineering excellence and mechanical artistry that it is, it's really going to be ridden, taken camping and packrafting and used exactly as it's designer intended and then some! Which means that it's going to get 'Life Marks', and lot's of them! I'm definitely going to be disappointed the first few times that it happens, thereafter I'll be fine with it because there's no way to keep it looking immaculate and brand new, and those 'Life Marks' will remind me of the trips, the camping and the bikerafting! I've seen the protective plastic films being used on mountain bikes so I imagine there's some availability for a Brompton, but bicycle usage inevitably takes a toll and even with the best will in the world I expect to find 'Life Marks' I'll have no recollection of occurring, so the best I can hope for is sticking on protective plastic film and taking lot's of photographs whilst the bike is immaculate and brand new to look back on...
Well said. I never thought of it like that. I guess I am too OCD. However, I would really like to have a multipurpose Brompton to take on all those life adventures and a pretty Brompton for showing off around town. It’s kind of like dressing up to go out someplace nice and wearing jeans and a tee shirt to go to the park or to work.
I completely hear you, they last so well and because you tend to keep them indoors more they last even better. Together with the mudguards, it's super easy to keep them in a pristine condition, so anything that's not pristine... My frame has worn near that hinge as well. They do put protective clear plastic on, mostly where the front wheel hooks onto the rear frame, they should put those everywhere that cables come in contact with the frame. I've just had a courtesy bike for a few days and noticed more of the protective plastic in other places.
i bike unfolded isn’t it a bit unsightly? I would use Mylar repair tape|patches or something similar that is transparent. That might be the same stuff Brompton themselves use anyway.
I’m quite OCD as well, but those nicks, wear-thrus and hickies are evidence of life of good service to it’s owner....embrace the patina and enjoy the ride.
I feel for you. I am the same with everything I own and I wish I have two of everything. One to use and one to keep. I have my Brompton for 15years and I ride everyday, rain or shine or snow. It's still in pretty good condition. You're right, the areas where the cable are in contact with the frame has quite a bit of scuffing. I am super upset when I got my bike back from the workshop. There's a small pin head size chunk of leather missing on my Brooks saddle! I have been buffing it every single day, trying to smooth it off...It's sad when you're a little obsessive like me.😑
As you get older and your eyesight best worse, those marks, well you cannot see them. In my 70s now I just ride, and don't worry, its a tool as mentioned. Love your stuff.
There are rubber proctors that slip over cables to stop wear and tear on the frame, most road bikes have them. Also, my Trek road bike came with a sheet of clear frame protector stickers at the back of the manual/welcome pack, surprised Brompton doesn't supply these.
I know just how you feel Brian. Mine is graphite in a Matt finish and I really worry about marks and scratches so like others I have applied helicopter tape. Now I’m feeling a lot happier. I may even apply it to other places which become scuffed like handlebars or seatposts etc.
Be careful of buying used , especially private sales as they could be potentially stolen bikes, have a friend in London who had her new Brompton stolen while she was in the shop for minutes, it was enough time for the thief to overcome 2 locks and no doubt the bike ended up for sale so somewhere, besides being a devastating experience.
Oh believe me I make sure the owner has some documentation of ownership and I run the serial number with an online data base just to make sure it was not stolen.
on the front fork near the tape you can get a cable fender that goes in that tube on the back of the fork. comes in black or silver. its a round disk with a bolt and nylock nut
This is why I buy well used bikes with full of wear and tear. I buff them up, can use them any way I want and make the best of it. My bikes are that used that nobody is willing to steal them but they are in 100% top technical condition and I treasure them 😊And I never have to feel sorry if there is an extra scratch on it. PS I got about twenty folding bikes.
@@ibikeunfolded Brian, if you go to ebay or similar and search for "helicopter tape". I don't know if this is what is currently on my bike as I didn't fit it myself but it seems to be what a few other Brompton owners have recommended; it's super cheap and indestructible.

Nice vid Brian. I saw a few mentions already in the comments about protective tape to protect the paint job. Well I bought some and specifically it's called "3M clear paint protection vinyl film 2" x 48" " and it works really well and it's hardly noticeable once applied. Very quality vinyl for sure.
Are all cycle ways on the left hand side of the road in n Denver, Colorado? Thanks for this Vlog. I am just that much short of buying a Brompton and now...I heard that buying second hand is not all it's cut out to be.
I use muti purpose polish that you can get in any supermarket here in the uk for my motorcycle and my new folding ebike I also hate to get my bikes dirty even kept a Chinese motorcycle looking like new for the 4 years I had it lol.

Hi Brian, really appreciating your down to earth and balanced reviews. I have a B on order here in the UK and very much looking forward to it arriving. I'm slightly worried as Brompton say that max rider and luggage weight is 110kg. I'm 110 without luggage but I do intend to commute so will have luggage. Seen or heard of any issues with weight on these bikes?
Mike Ainsworth no, I know they can handle heavy loads. My friend had one and has bike packed across the west coast carrying lots of weight and still did not have any issues.
Mike, don't worry about it. I weigh 103kg without gear, so I'm right at the edge. I jump off curbs, I've been using it daily for over two years, I give it very little maintenance and never had a single issue. These bikes are designed to withstand a dynamic load that is much greater than that. So, if you're riding really heavy, just take it easy by not jumping off curbs etc. You're gonna love this little bike. Oh, I did have to tighten the headset a couple of times (maybe due to my weight?), but I did it by myself, didn't even need a bike shop. If you're a tall guy, just make sure you have the proper seatpost length.
@@EverydayCycling6'1" and 110. At 57 years young I will not be jumping off curbs so no worries on that front but your quick response has eased my worry so thank you very much.
Hello Brian , I’m in my now 70 years of age and came to Brompton in my 60’s. When I first got my Brompton I was 147kg. I ride on tarmac concrete and gravel roads with no problem and zero punctures riding on marathon and with marathon plus tyres . I don’t bump down stairs steps or kerbs. I enjoy my Brompton enormously .I have ordered an e Brompton I’m now 120kg and have just ordered the new eBrompton with all the toys . I’ve never broken a spoke, never buckled a wheel and the frame is as tight as the day I got it. Nothing rattles or has worked loose. I’d rather be on a throughly engineered Brompton than any other bike. I am an engineer. Both at ‘hands on’ and a university degree. Douglas
@@douglasmowat7143 that's an awesome feedback Douglas, probably exactly what Mike was looking for. Thank you for sharing! I'm also an engineer, structural analysis of aircraft. I'd say the wheels would suffer more than the frame if you carried extra cargo, since the luggage block and rear rack are placed exactly on top of each wheel, but it's good to know that your wheelset is doing absolutely fine. Stay safe!
oh man you're making me sad lol, I'm picking up my black frame Brompton this week and I'm already sad it'll start to look "used" soon. But same with everything else I own, whether it's a macbook pro, or iphone, or furniture, but after a while I stop caring as much and enjoy the use of the item more than the way they look in their new condition. There's a character to the wear&tear, they're unique to your use of the item!
I feel your pain! Like someone already commented, I also invested in some helicopter tape from Amazon - seems to do the trick pretty well and there are videos on where to attach it (check out the Brilliant Bikes ones - Brompton to the core!). I enjoy your videos - thanks for sharing 👍⭐️⭐️🤗
Hi Brian, Second thoughts !!!! You are based in Colorado. Surely there must be a local saddle maker, or an artisan who works in making leather products who could make you a Sleeve similar to the one that Jim Barrett produces here in the UK. I sense a commercial opportunity opening up !!!!
Scuff, scratches, &dings just add character to a bike(especially a folder). Wait until the day arrives, where you travel somewhere special. While there, you out on a STICKER!!!
This is why I went raw lacquer, heck it came with rust under the lacquer seemingly on purpose. Few pics of her on.. flic.kr/p/2j6SjdU These were taken when it was brand new.
That isn't rust, it's just the surface of the steel and the discolorations from the heat applied to the brazed joints. You can still kinda see the bass of the brazing through the Black Raw Laquer. I wish they hadn't discontinued the true Raw Laquer before I could buy mine... still love it!
You do know there’s a whole list of companies doing 3rd party Brompton parts. Pimp your ride, make some changes, make wholesale changes, up to you. You can actually improve your rides.
I have a black/titanium Brompton on order. I will be using clear ISC Racers tape on the bike. I have used it on all of my bikes and it works well to protect the frame. Comes in various widths and can be found on Amazon.
Everytime, I repaint any of my bikes, they get scratched and consequently I've learned to accept it. My bikes are not show machines so those wear markes, to me, is a badge of honor. Embace you scatches. You're a rider.
I understand why you are putting the tape in various areas - to prevent the frame from scratching. But why does it matter that you have an unscratched frame underneath that ugly-looking tape? Do you ever take a peak at the non-scratched frame to actually enjoy the "unscratched" view?
No he doesn't because of the brakes being too powerful. I live on my X11. Its so awesome and conquers the hills where I live. Which was what I needed. Bromptons are the best fold but terrible on steep hills. The X11 floats up hills. That was the most important thing for me. And it's fast on the flats too. And has great stability and handling..
Probably not too safe considering the rear triangle has a suspension block and may move a little. In low gear I can pull the front wheel slightly though.
Where do you live. I'm from NJ NYC tristate area and willing to sell you mine ... It's in great condition.... I was going to put it up on eBay soon but was really hoping for someone local
Hi Brian.. I have the same matte black edition (H type handlebars) and the duct tape is a good idea!!! I actually have 2 matte black Bromptons. I bought my first one online at a bike shop in Tucson. The second one I "accidentally" bid on on ebay. I really didn't expect to win the bidding but I did. It's also an H type handlebar matte black. So now I have 2 and I alternate riding each one. Don't have the heart to put one of them for sale because well..... they're my kids now...hahhaha
Here's a thing. I've seen little bike trailers with covers on for small children.. Why not use the one you have now. Get a trailer put a new Brompton in that. And you will always have a very nice clean Brompton.. 👍👍👍👍👍
I thought this might tell me something useful about the Brompton. What it tells me is that this spoiled child can't take normal wear and tear on paint and wants the world to know about it. He needs help.
Oh as soon as you stopped the video and said let me explain. I lost interest in watching the video . An explanation like that usually lead to no conclusion . And is a signal to me this is a blog and not a review
@@ibikeunfolded yea I see you title it as a blog. That's fine for those viewers are regular fans of your show . Your personality. But for me just passing through looking for information on the bike your approach is not my cup of tea
Hi just found your vlogs great! Its interesting to see a US city too. I agree with you as riding a Brompton just brings a smile to my face. I am a retired railway civil engineer living some 20miles south west of Birmingham in the English midlands. I've wanted one of these machines for many years (decades) and have recently got a 2011 M6R. Yes second hand Bromptons are still big bucks in this country too. My machine has lots of paint scrapes due to careless folding by the previous owner and that it was folded in a VW camper for use on camp sites, not a lot of miles use but it has been carted around a lot. Brompton paint has either Panetone or RAL colour codes so your local paint shop should be able to help with touch up paint, mine is in Kew Green. I thought of using gaffer tape for places that rub as well, I was going to try Gorilla tape as its thicker. Keeping spinning those pedals. Keep safe. ALL lives matter.
I plan on traveling a lot with the Brompton this summer when this pandemic dies down, so I will get to use the bikes awesome folding capabilities. I plan on visiting England at some point as it’s on my bucket list. Thanks for watching.
You need to re-evaluate what is important. People are dying by breathing viruses. I have a black edition and after the first scratch it didn't matter anymore.
People die everyday.....whats important in my life is to live my life and enjoy the time ”I” have because it will never come again. I feel for the unfortunate people who contract illnesses and die but there is nothing I can do about that. If you accidentally scratched your car you would probably be upset about that so don't judge me for being bummed about scratching my bike.
Totally get this... I live in S Wales and we have produced some World champion mountain bikers. A sponsored friend of mine used to say the first thing he would do with a new bike was throw it down the trail, literally throw it, just to get those first dings, scratches and dents out of the way as he didn't ride as fast worrying about his new frame.... Not doing that with my Brompton though ! 😂 Great vid🤘
Wow, I won’t do that with my Brompton either😬. I know scratches happen and after a while I will be less and less concerned after my Brompton gets some age on it.
Video was before I learned to time stamp😀 also the video was over 30 mins of raw footage long....I cut so much but if you would like to see the extended version I could arrange that.
I would love a less stressful job😀 however, walking dogs generally doesn't pay the 75,000 to 85,000 I get from my current job. Plus benefits.....Not to mention the 10-15 k a year extra I get from being a bike messenger.

Yes, I am looking into more solutions to this problem. I will check into the vinyl film solution.. thank you
I feel for you.
They have the clear rubber protectors in some areas but not all. I might have to ask the bike shop if they have a set.
I know just how you feel Brian. Mine is graphite in a Matt finish and I really worry about marks and scratches so like others I have applied helicopter tape. Now I’m feeling a lot happier. I may even apply it to other places which become scuffed like handlebars or seatposts etc.
I am looking into such options for my bike as well👍
Be careful of buying used , especially private sales as they could be potentially stolen bikes, have a friend in London who had her new Brompton stolen while she was in the shop for minutes, it was enough time for the thief to overcome 2 locks and no doubt the bike ended up for sale so somewhere, besides being a devastating experience.
I say don’t worry about the scuffs. Remember you live once so just enjoy all you have.
I am trying. it’s my OCD acting up😀
My Brompton has clear tape at all those rub points, from the shop. Was this a dealer detailing omission ?
steve steve I guess my Brompton did not come with that? I will have to talk to the dealer. Thanks for the info.
@@ibikeunfolded Brian, if you go to ebay or similar and search for "helicopter tape". I don't know if this is what is currently on my bike as I didn't fit it myself but it seems to be what a few other Brompton owners have recommended; it's super cheap and indestructible.
Hi brian I really like every videos you made about brompton..your insights helps alot .I am planning to have a nice brompton but it would take awhile for me to get one im from the philippines and its alot expensive but still I like to have it because all your reviews are really good.keep making videos I just subcribed to your channel.thanks man..
Thank you for the kind words and thank you for the sub. More content is coming....
an
can strip bike down every few years & get re-powder coated fairly cheaply , service at same time
I will have to check into that. I am not sure if we have shops that will do that sort of thing.
@@ibikeunfolded not shops, google for your area "powder coating" should Min.charge cash job for cheap any colour you wish
Just found your channel.. I enjoyed riding in Denver on my brompton. Wear and tear are part and parcel of riding a brompton. Embrace the scuffs 😉
I am trying...i am trying.
You need to follow the toy collector’s approach: 1 to keep in original packaging, and 1 to play with.
Co L excellent! I will check that out as well and hopefully move beyond the duct tape.
Hello, I’m the same way. I’m always making sure is not scratch etc etc.
I know. It’s tough to accomplish here on the streets I ride.
My Brompton has been scratched and chipped also. I use touch up paint when it starts getting bad.
I need to look into getting some touch up paint.
I've gotten myself a M6R black edition, thank you for your review video.
Basikal Pertama thank you for watching and enjoy the M6R black.😍 it’s a great bike.
Are all cycle ways on the left hand side of the road in n Denver, Colorado? Thanks for this Vlog. I am just that much short of buying a Brompton and now...I heard that buying second hand is not all it's cut out to be.
Carolle Enkelmann no, just select sections of Denver do this. Maybe they want to screw with our heads?
@@ibikeunfolded it sure does especially if you come from a left-hand drive country! Eeney- meeney ' meiney mo..
Hi Brian,
Could I please ask what the device is you have on your handlebars? Is it a GPS/trip computer? Can you recommend it? Thanks 👍🏻
It's a Garmin explore. Yes it's a GPS I recommend and I will probably do a video on it soon.
I use muti purpose polish that you can get in any supermarket here in the uk for my motorcycle and my new folding ebike I also hate to get my bikes dirty even kept a Chinese motorcycle looking like new for the 4 years I had it lol.
I understand, I want my bikes to look almost new until I am ready to upgrade then I will not care as much.

Ciro Di Rosa cool, I will check it out. Thanks.
Just bought me a turkish green black edition. After seeing this video, I am now concerned. Thanks for the heads up.
Sherwin Prime I didn’t mean to worry anyone, I was just making people aware of some wear issues that can easily be fixed. Thanks for watching.
To protect the tubes and stop clinking noises,
Buy these and glue gun them on

I enjoy my Brompton enormously .I have ordered an e Brompton
I’m now 120kg and have just ordered the new eBrompton with all the toys .
Stay safe!
thank you for this video. very nice.
You’re welcome.
oh man you're making me sad lol, I'm picking up my black frame Brompton this week and I'm already sad it'll start to look "used" soon. But same with everything else I own, whether it's a macbook pro, or iphone, or furniture, but after a while I stop caring as much and enjoy the use of the item more than the way they look in their new condition. There's a character to the wear&tear, they're unique to your use of the item!
You’re right of course, some times I have to buy double items....one to keep new and one to 😉
@@ibikeunfolded If you got the funds do it! haha
Amanda Leigh thank you, I will definitely check out that channel. I can use all the tips I can get.😀
Hi Brian, Second thoughts !!!! You are based in Colorado. Surely there must be a local saddle maker, or an artisan who works in making leather products who could make you a Sleeve similar to the one that Jim Barrett produces here in the UK.
I sense a commercial opportunity opening up !!!!
No opportunity with me..I would make a horrible businessman. If Someone
else made a similar product I would get one.
Scuff, scratches, &dings just add character to a bike(especially a folder). Wait until the day arrives, where you travel somewhere special. While there, you out on a STICKER!!!
This is why I went raw lacquer, heck it came with rust under the lacquer seemingly on purpose.
Few pics of her on..
flic.kr/p/2j6SjdU
These were taken when it was brand new.
Wow, looks better than I thought.
brian d vlogs The newer dark raw lacquer looks 'cleaner' but doesn't have the gold colour welds
That isn't rust, it's just the surface of the steel and the discolorations from the heat applied to the brazed joints.
You can still kinda see the bass of the brazing through the Black Raw Laquer. I wish they hadn't discontinued the true Raw Laquer before I could buy mine... still love it!
I’m not bummed by your use of the Brompton. As a folder rider (Giant Expressway1) I enjoy watching other folders in action!!!🤔👍
I might try to get my hands on a giant and review it as I have had several people say its a good bike. Thank you.
i bike unfolded the Expressway 1 is good quality at the $600 price range
More Brompton videos, please! The momentum is building up again after the pandemic.
You do know there’s a whole list of companies doing 3rd party Brompton parts. Pimp your ride, make some changes, make wholesale changes, up to you. You can actually improve your rides.
Yes, I have been exploring the options and accessories. I will make videos when I decide on something.
Good luck in your search look forward to seeing the new steed 🚴🏻♂️
Jason Weatherman thanks, I want to find a good work horse Brompton, but in the mean time I still have my black brommie to enjoy.😀
Brompton are like iMac. The resell value are very good.
Yes, and I have both so I know😀
.....just seen the latest for Denver... Hope your safe brother, genuinely 👍
Yeah, is been crazy here the last week or so. I got some good footage of riding the Brompton through the protestors. I might post it. Not sure yet.
I have a black/titanium Brompton on order. I will be using clear ISC Racers tape on the bike. I have used it on all of my bikes and it works well to protect the frame. Comes in various widths and can be found on Amazon.
Diane thanks, I will look it up and check it out.
I feel your pain. I myself am waiting on the 2nd one to arrive..
Yes, I see massive benefit in owning two Bromptons.
How about using some auto body wrap?
I would like to, but then dirt and water get underneath and still damage the frame.
Why 3 minutes of B-roll before you even start talking again? I wasn’t sure if you were gonna or if I should leave but thankfully I sped up lol
What can I say? 😀🤣. I am not the best UA-camr for that and many other reasons.
Everytime, I repaint any of my bikes, they get scratched and consequently I've learned to accept it. My bikes are not show machines so those wear markes, to me, is a badge of honor. Embace you scatches. You're a rider.
Do you ever sell your used bromptons when you buy others?
I understand why you are putting the tape in various areas - to prevent the frame from scratching. But why does it matter that you have an unscratched frame underneath that ugly-looking tape? Do you ever take a peak at the non-scratched frame to actually enjoy the "unscratched" view?
Well if it’s going to be ugly anyway then I would rather look at ugly tape than an ugly scratch.🤷
Do you ride your Tern Verge P/X10 much?
No he doesn't because of the brakes being too powerful. I live on my X11. Its so awesome and conquers the hills where I live. Which was what I needed. Bromptons are the best fold but terrible on steep hills. The X11 floats up hills. That was the most important thing for me. And it's fast on the flats too. And has great stability and handling..
is a brompton strong enough to pull a wheelie?
Probably not too safe considering the rear triangle has a suspension block and may move a little. In low gear I can pull the front wheel slightly though.
@@ibikeunfolded thank you. Probably not too safe as you say. Was just wondering if it was robust enough
Why not get a B75 ?
Geo H I have been thinking of getting a B75 for commuting only.
Those are called "Battle Scars"
That's what they say👍
Where do you live. I'm from NJ NYC tristate area and willing to sell you mine ... It's in great condition.... I was going to put it up on eBay soon but was really hoping for someone local
I live in Denver Colorado. I will keep an eye out..
@marc m
How much will you going to sell it. What model?
I understand completely. I can’t bear to get rid of any of my bikes for the same reason.
Walmart $125 for a push iron
Thanks
Here's a thing. I've seen little bike trailers with covers on for small children.. Why not use the one you have now. Get a trailer put a new Brompton in that. And you will always have a very nice clean Brompton.. 👍👍👍👍👍
I thought this might tell me something useful about the Brompton. What it tells me is that this spoiled child can't take normal wear and tear on paint and wants the world to know about it. He needs help.
I know, my therapist keeps telling me the same thing.
No I'm not going to let you explain. I'm going to jump to conclusions and load on a bunch of crap
Not sure what you mean?
@@ibikeunfolded I can't remember what I ment either I will have to view the video again and get back with you
Oh as soon as you stopped the video and said let me explain. I lost interest in watching the video . An explanation like that usually lead to no conclusion . And is a signal to me this is a blog and not a review
Robert Brawley good to know, I’ll keep that in mind.
@@ibikeunfolded oh, I'm judging you, alright. You may learn something.
CURVEDGLASS123 sorry, I was always a slow learner.
Clear Gorilla tape, easy....

Video was before I learned to time stamp😀 also the video was over 30 mins of raw footage long....I cut so much but if you would like to see the extended version I could arrange that.
You look tired in these videos. Every thought about a vacation or a less-stressful job like walking dogs for rich people?
I would love a less stressful job😀 however, walking dogs generally doesn't pay the 75,000 to 85,000 I get from my current job. Plus benefits.....Not to mention the 10-15 k a year extra I get from being a bike messenger.
