This trick is not just in Japan. This is also heavily used in army, specially on aircraft carrier. If you will find some aircraft carrier take-off videos, you can see there how the deck crew is pointing at every important object which is needed to check before take-off. Specially the shooter - the guy in yellow jacket.

When departing with my trains in the Netherlands I point at the departure indicator and then confirm all doors closed behind me by pointing at them. Then confirming all doors closed in front of me and pointing at the departure signal as a final confirmation.
