    HI. At 18mm you can go as low as 3.5, but at 55mm you can't go lower than 5.6. There are lenses that have the largest possible aperture constant across the whole zoom range, but they are usually much more expensive than variable aperture lenses. Maximum f-number can also be different depending on focal lenght (zoom). I hope now it's clear.

    My aperture motor is broken... it would be nice to be able to set it manually.

    Unfortunately, most modern lenses do not have that option. Maybe look for somebody who can fix it or buy a new one. There are a lot of great lenses at good prices ;-)
