Some lovely countryside on that drive. Hi again. 😃 Once again, a quick pointer: 04:43 The reason why most "country" roads in the UK are so narrow is their age. They were first used hundreds, sometimes thousands, of years ago, long before cars and lorries had even been thought of. Because the main forms of traffic back then were folk on foot or the odd horse drawn wagon they did not need to be particularly wide. Narrow roads means more field area which, in turn, means more crops. Unlike in the "New Worlds" of North America and Australia where there was plenty of room to build wide roads. One exception was that of "Drovers' Roads", along which animals would be driven (herded) to market. These were wider to accommodate the herds and to allow for some grazing at the sides. Also to rest over for the night as often the markets were several days' walk away. I think that the road at this point may well be one of those.
I love this time of year so much. The early part of spring I call `The time of the Daffodils.` Alas, too ephemeral a time for me. But it never gets `old` each time it comes. Lincoln ? `Been there hundreds of times. I like the approach from the south - where one gets a fine view of that great cathedral atop the hill. Lincoln City itself is often left out of many tourists itinerary and in favour of York. In my view Lincoln is more the magnifficent cathedral and the two cities are only about 2 hours apart, if you use the Humber Bridge. If you are approaching Lincoln, or leaving it for that matter, and heading south to the city or north away from it the usual road to take is the A15. But there is a less busy and much more fascinating road that runs more or less parallel to the A15 and that is the B1398. It takes you through one or two incredibly picturesque hamlets with none to be found on the A15. Heck I still love that road - and have 50 years of seeing them every day.
I'm planning another trip to Lincoln soon. There were some beautiful places to see. I try my best to try places that local people recommend. I feel like I learn more about your beautiful country that way. Thank you for the kind comment and watching. 🤍Jess
Micky, I will look to see what I can find. Really appreciate the recommendation. It means a lot. Also, thanks for watching and leaving a comment! 🤍 Jess
Hi guy's, it's good to see you enjoying your time here in the UK and welcome and enjoy your stay! I have to say say that you're man has better driving skills than some people here, you did make me chuckle with your worries at being put into the ditch lol a lot of people here would say that there's enough room for 3 car's down these lane's and they weren't particularly narrow compared to some, a beautiful card table at the end 🍻
Sean, thank you so much! He's such a wonderful driver. I will pass that on to him. I'm just a nervous passenger, is all. I'm getting a lot better. We love all your vintage & antique stuff here in the UK.
Hi just to make you aware that i subscribed to you a couple of days ago and i didn't unsubscribed but i looked this morning and i wasn't subscribed anymore so i don't know what happened there, it might be something to mention some time in the future just in case it happens to other's 🍻
I'm British and enjoyed the Drive as well which I had to give up since my Stroke, I'm from Derbyshire which is alot more hilly than where your from ,I used to love going into the Derbyshire Peak District and visiting different villages and in the Peak District. Glad you enjoy the English countryside. Your husband seems a good driver.
Sorry you aren't driving anymore. Would love to take you along with me more often. I would love to check out a hilly place. Thank you for watching and leaving a nice comment. 🤍 Jess
Methinks hubby is rather enjoying himself at your expense...his driving by the way is very good, and I'm a retired driving instructor...stay safe and remember driving back in the good old US of A will never be the same. 😂

I'd just like to comment on how impressed with your driving I was. Love your distance from the car in fron. I wish more would take that approach. I also have had the very same conversation with my hubby as you two did. The exact same words regularly come out of my mouth, lol. We're from the UK originally, but live in Australia now. We live on the side of a mountain in a rainforest, so we also have lots of those single lane-duel usage roads. 💞
Thanks for the kind words. We do what we can. It is nice to know we are not the only ones that have these conversations. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Chris and Jess.
Loved watching your drive along those beautiful narrow roads. Reminded me of my time posted to RAF Marham, near Kings Lynn in the early 90's. Had a slight accident on one of them. My fault, just back from 6 years in Germany and forgot which side the road to drive on for a moment. Wait until the tractors are out and about. That'll test your patience. 🚜🚗🙁
I have never been to RAF Marham. Are Americans permitted on the base? Sorry you had an accident. Thank you for sharing your story! Love that you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. 🤍 Jess
We are heading to Wales in October for a week. I'm very excited to check out a few things. Also, I have come to appreciate and love the roads here. looks like you arent that far away from great yarmouth, and about 2.5 hr drive from where im located, so the question is when are you coming up to see robin country and the major oak? if you do plan on a visit here is a great place to stay its called the 'maypole at wellow' not far from edwinstowe and a few minutes to sherwood forest... also some nice antique shops around that area.
I will definitely look into Yarmouth! I'm always up for a road trip, especially to see something magnificent. Thank you for the insight. As always, thanks for watching. 🤍 Jess
Ha ha. We're also Americans staying in Suffolk UK for a month and your driving concerns are just the same ours! The roads are so crazy narrow and the speed limit says 60 mph half the time. It is nuts! But beautiful -yes! Good luck finding things!
@Dancingqueen , well, it's nuts for people who are not from here. I'm not sure if you have ever left the UK. If so, then you know how difficult it is to drive in new places. 😉 🤍 Jess
@Dancingqueen We mean no offense to British citizens. We love you and your country. It's our brains that send us an unexpected and involuntary adrenaline rush that tells us we're going to die when on coming cars are driving straight at us. 99.99% of all roads in the United States are wide enough for all cars to pass each other without needing to stop or pull over - ever. So this is completely new and unexpected for us.❤️🇬🇧
The time to worry is when the lane is lined by dry-stone walls or a ten-foot hedge, and you meet a bus coming the other way, or better still the local milk-tanker running late on his collection round. That sorts the men from the boys....
Those roads are quite wide in comparison to a lot. Some of my roads are so narrow someone has to reverse to a passing point. Of course we always say thank you. Doesn't cost to be courteous and everyone keeps calm. It is something us Brits are used to.
Peckelhaze, we're getting the hang of driving the roads here more and more. To be honest we're coming to really enjoy them. Love going off exploring roads most Americans would be terrified of. Thank you for your comment and for watching our video. 🤍 Jess
Hi Jess, that was comical, we were laughing at your comments during your drive down the narrow back lanes 😉 You sounded really relieved when you reached a main road and said ..."Oh, a regular road now, phew !" ha 😉 Stay safe, maybe you should stick to the main roads now ? 😉
@@DaydreamersBarn Absolutely 😊 My cousin was born n raised in the States. He was an Eagle Driver until last year. (Two stints at Lakenheath) his wife and he decided to stay here ! I'm near Isleham, if you ever need anything, give me a shout. Same username everywhere.
Douglas, I will definitely add that to our list of ever growing places to check. Do you have any other recommendations like food and shops? Also, thank you for watching and leaving a comment. 🤍 Jess
@@DaydreamersBarn Everyone heads towards Tenby but if you go further west you have Milford Haven, Solva and St Davids. A bit further north there's New Quay. All worth a visit.
Well done sir , your definitely got used to the size of roads because as soon as you have got clear of the village we can hear the engine reving up 😂 . To help the wife abit just tell her that the more paint in the middle of the road it means " be a tad more cautious " If a road side sign ( triangle shape ) has a black line on it at a angle it means " bends ahead if the line is vertical and turns sharply left then right its telling you that a left bend is next followed a right bend and visa versa for right and left bend 😂 also tell her the car has small windows and this makes it seem that your going faster than you think . Keep up with the driving and you'll soon be doing handbrake turns more so in a mini 😂😂
Card table looks nice, You did ok on the narrow sections, you were lucky that you didn’t face an oncoming Scania or DAF articulated lorry, heating oil tanker or bus, @4:35 Im sure you've found by now that you can normally park on a two way street facing the opposite way, although the car you saw was on the verge.
Oh, I'm trying to be more brave. Love the roads and all it's challenges. I love the card table, so pleased with it. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Means a lot 🤍 Jess
wow you are one nervous driver!! those are quite standard country roads, wait till you go down a road with the hedges brushing both of your wing mirrors and then see a car coming towards you !!! lol also you mentioned the car that was facing the wrong way on the wrong side, well in the UK unless signed otherwise you can park on either side of the road facing either direction
Hello Hot Mechanic, I was definitely very nervous.. I am getting so much better on these roads. Love driving and exploring all the UK has to offer. Cars parking in both directions is very common here in England, but in the US, that is not common practice at all. So, it just throws me for a loop, which is why I mentioned it. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Hope you have a lovely weekend! 🤍 Jess
You are about 1 hour away from Flatford Mill, where Constable painted The Hay Wain. The area is known as Constable country. The HayWain house is still there today. Worth a run out one day if not already been. The roads you are freaking out on aren’t even small ones, they are just our average country roads lol so funny. You are right though, at times he is going far too fast round the bends. National speed limit is the maximum, not the recommended speed.
Danna, thank you for watching, and I'm glad you found it funny! I love the road but get a little scared at times. My family laughs at me all the time. 😉 🤍 Jess
@@DaydreamersBarn It did make me chuckle. Us Brits are use to narrow roads. Infact, most of Europe have narrow roads which you'll find out when you take some R&R.
I was surprised that you drove so quickly past the area place names; As a viewer I had no idea where you were on your travels and you might regret it when you re-watch the film.
Susan, thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it. I will take that into consideration when I'm editing our next video. Thank you for your input and for watching our video. 🤍 Jess
At 9:34 you really did have a lot of space to pass the car coming the other way. I know it's difficult judging where the edge of the road is on your left as you're used to driving on the opposite side. You'll get there eventually with experience! From your other video driving from Lakenheath, you've already mastered the art of slowing down or pulling in when there's not enough room to pass a parked car when someone's coming the other way on our narrow roads. Got to judge to keep going or hang back. Very well done! Maybe got to face the prospect of your daughters wanting to learn to drive (got to be 17). Nerves of steel required if you're to out with them.
I'm getting better with each time I drive. I love going on the back roads so much more to explore. My kids don't want to drive ever.. So it looks like they will have to wait until they get back to the US. Which I'm fine with. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel! 🤍 Jess
I'm so glad we were able to give you a little giggle! Thank you for watching and leaving us a comment. My apologies for the late response. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
👍 umm... if you weren't particularly comfortable with some of these UK roads/lanes, I strongly suggest that you don't take a driving holiday around Italy (some of their roads are narrower, and most of the drivers are a lot faster!). One suggestion if you want to explore some other parts of the UK - try SW England and Wales - many similar narrow roads, but you get hills as well, and lots & lots of castles too!
We are definitely getting used to the roads and are more comfortable travel now. We have a trip scheduled for Wales, and I'm over the moon with excitement! We will be taking you all along with us on our many adventures. Thank you for watching this video. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
You get used to them when you have been over hear a while, you just have to be careful on the blind bends and especially when there are Horses about, you usually have to stay well back and wait for the rider to wave you past. Glad you like our countryside i suppose we take it for granted,
Your country is quite magnificent! I have loved to learn all the proper road rules. Always on the lookout for the horses, bikes, and such always pass with caution. Thank you for watching this video and leaving a kind comment! 🤍 Jess
@@DaydreamersBarn Is it an Edwardian copy of an earlier, Georgian piece? I like the design of the bearer, supporting the top section, rather than a pull-out leg (I'm guessing that was to accommodate the "fullness" of a lady's gown, not being obstructed by a leg). I've been out of the antique trade for years, now, but would ask an auctioneer??
So glad you're not my passenger. I've driven in parts of the world where not only are the roads narrower than your video shows, but they're unpaved and have plenty of large pot holes. As for India, often the buses and trucks don't even bother with which side of the road they're supposed to be on.
I think this is mainly because our cars have to be road worthy (annual MOT) and in the US there's no check, plus our driving test is much more difficult. That said, the quality of some UK roads is abysmal. Many potholes. I found the quality of asphalt or whatever they use in the US to be better, the roads always felt smoother over there.
While in Lincolnshire you must go to Hemswell Antique centre but on a Sunday it has a carboot sale with loads of dealers and lots of old Art Deco period buildings housing many Antique shops,I used to go there often and have picked up some good bits of stuff at good prices.
When you see the national speed limit sign on those country roads, that's when you wish you had a manual gearbox. Imagine doing 60mph! Exhilarating much?!
I`d urge anyone coming from a non-European country to come here to England, if they so wish, in mid Spring to mid Summer. Here you`ll find England at its most colourful - and most beautiful. England, Scotland, Wales, EIRE - all are at their best at this time of year. Not to neglect Northern Ireland. Autumn has its own peculicular way of stiring ones wits and emotions toward nostalgia - as it will throughout northern Europe and North America. But I`ll never be anywhere other than here when the sun begins to rise once more in Spring. As is now and where I am now. They make me laugh at c 4:10 onwards along the road. I`d be driving along that road at between 50 and 60 mph - and as likely as not the vehicles travelling in the opposite direction would be doing the same. It`s something one get`s used to. `Slow down a bit, but not much. Cars would regularly travel in opposite directions on these roads, each doing 60 mph. It is not always a wize decision. But by and large we do it without any problems.
The UK is stunning this time of year. I'm looking forward to visiting Wales soon. There are just so many beautiful places to see on this island! I am so thankful to call this home for 3 years! You all are so blessed to have so many wonderful things here. We're getting more confident with each trip we take on the drives. Thank you for the amazing comment and for watching our video! 🤍 Jess
@@DaydreamersBarn I must apologize for the dreadful spelling mistakes I made in my first comment. I read quite a lot which is how ( I thought ) I learned how to spell - by visual recollection. There is no need to apologize. I was happy to have a comment to read and get some perspective. Hope you have a lovely evening and continue to watch my channel and leave comments for me to enjoy reading. 🤍 Jess
I hope you do the right thing and give a wave to other drivers when they slow or stop or let you out. Or a customary flash of headlights (to let other road users know you are there) officially,
Paul Bromley, Definitely, it's one of the things that I love about driving here. Very thoughtful drivers, unlike in the US. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! 🤍 Jess
James, From what I'm custom, too, in the US. Don't get me wrong, I love the roads here because it's always something new. I'm definitely looking forward to exploring Ireland. 🤍 Jess
When you see the National speed limit sign it does not mean you have to drive at 60mph, your road condition dictate what speed you should do for your safety as well as others, and when you see a 20mph sign it is there for a reason so do be careful and have a safe journey and enjoy our lovely countryside
The relatively large number of narrower roads is I think particular to your neck of the woods. I definitely have not been in that part of UK. Other areas with narrow roads are mainly in Cornwall/Devon and remote parts of the Highlands of Scotland. Now you know why most sensible UK folk do not buy huge 'gas guzzlers', even if they could afford their purchase cost, as fuel is much more expensive in UK and rest of Europe than USA. Many private motorists also make a conscious effort to choose a more 'eco' vehicle. Unfortunately there are also those who buy the biggest engined, huge Range Rovers (aka 'Chelsea tractors') to take kids a mile to school in the city and to take up all the road in the countryside just to p. off everyone else!
I completely get it. That is why I left both vehicles in the US for safe keeping. We have two very economical vehicles here. Thanks for the comment and watching! 🤍 Jess
Driving around Dartmoor (you must see our national parks!), you'd really notice how narrow they are and you'll end up trailing a muck spreader for the bone fide country experience..;)
Why dont you buy some antiques at auction?........They are open to dealers and general public..........There are HUGE bargains to be had if you want proper antiques (over 100 yrs old).....most auctions also have websites where you can view online before travelling and sometimes a guide price or reserve price........Maybe a change of career for you in future? - filling shipping containers of items youve bought cheap as chips and making a huge mark-up selling them in the USA.
We definitely have, and we've shared a video of the auction house we went to. We just love to travel and pick up unique items from people and learn about those pieces. We appreciate your time, and thank you so much for watching! Hope you have a great day. Cheers 🤍 Jess & family x

🤍Jess
Plenty of good Antique auction houses throughout England. Lots of good finds.
Micky,
I will look to see what I can find.
Jeff,
He normally does.. He lives his best life, scaring me. 😂
🤍 Jess
I was laughing near the end you sounding concerned and your other half laughing, brought a slight tear to my eyes when you were talking of the greenery of dear mother earth, the lush green is due to the frequent rains, enjoyed this Thank You for your share 💙💎🕊️.
Cornwall UK 💙💎🕊️
I'm so glad to give you some entertainment and a laugh. Thanks for watching and leaving a lovely comment! 🤍 Jess
🤍 Jess
I'm sure Sacoolas can sympathise
Still waiting to see the narrow roads lol Those were massive compared to some here in the UK.
Chris,
In my American opinion it was a narrow road. 😉Thanks for the comment, my friend. 🤍 Jess
They should try Wales, particularly the North. The roads in this video are B roads at best, also country lanes.
If she's going to keep freaking out, perhaps you should leave her at home. 😁😁@@DaydreamersBarn
We are heading to Wales in October for a week. I'm very excited to check out a few things.
Also, I have come to appreciate and love the roads here. Both Chris and I drive everywhere and go as much as we can to see and learn about this country. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Hope the video was a little entertaining due to me being very nervous after only being here a short time. 🤍 Jess
That was hilarious listening to you on the narrow roads.
I'm getting better. I love the roads but get a little nervous is all. LoL
I'm glad I could give entertainment. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 🤍 Jess
@@DaydreamersBarn To be honest I'm better driving those roads than being a passenger.
Obviously it’s very different in the sticks compared to where we are in London!
I could only imagine. 🤍 Jess
looks like you arent that far away from great yarmouth, and about 2.5 hr drive from where im located, so the question is when are you coming up to see robin country and the major oak? if you do plan on a visit here is a great place to stay its called the 'maypole at wellow' not far from edwinstowe and a few minutes to sherwood forest... also some nice antique shops around that area.
Hope you all have a blast!! It's such a beautiful country. Be safe and enjoy your stay! Thank you for the comment and for watching the video.
🤍 Jess
There’s nothing NUTS about our roads 🙄🇬🇧
Well then, all the Brit men must definitely be MEN!! 😉 🤍 Jess
John, I was relieved to see the main road. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching. It means a lot!
"Don't push me into the ditch!" 🤣
I'm so glad I can make people giggle. 🤍 Jess
Chris has it under control 😂😂 Relaxe. You could get a cruiseship through thise roads!
Maverick, oh, he's fantastic. I'm just a nervous newbie here. Thanks, friend! 🤍 Jess
@@DaydreamersBarn Absolutely 😊
My cousin was born n raised in the States. He was an Eagle Driver until last year. (Two stints at Lakenheath) his wife and he decided to stay here !
I'm near Isleham, if you ever need anything, give me a shout. Same username everywhere.
Make your way into west Wales the Pembrokeshire coastline is fantastic.
Well done sir , your definitely got used to the size of roads
because as soon as you have got clear of the village we can hear the engine reving up 😂 .
To help the wife abit just tell her that the more paint in the middle of the road it means " be a tad more cautious "
If a road side sign ( triangle shape ) has a black line on it at a angle it means " bends ahead if the line is vertical and turns sharply left then right its telling you that a left bend is next followed a right bend and visa versa for right and left bend 😂 also tell her the car has small windows and this makes it seem that your going faster than you think .
Keep up with the driving and you'll soon be doing handbrake turns more so in a mini 😂😂
Haha, I will share your comment with Chris. He will truly appreciate your support/comment, friend! 🤍 Jess
Or a combine harvester!
wow you are one nervous driver!! those are quite standard country roads, wait till you go down a road with the hedges brushing both of your wing mirrors and then see a car coming towards you !!! lol also you mentioned the car that was facing the wrong way on the wrong side, well in the UK unless signed otherwise you can park on either side of the road facing either direction
🤍 Jess
Most modern cars come with brakes now so you can slow down when passing cars on the smaller roads you must try it, it's a life saver.
Oh.. That's awesome advice, what we do on the small british roads all the time 😉. Thank you for your time watching and commenting!
Will check it out thank you for the recommendation. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Great video again Jess and Chris...it's usually the drivers/cars stacked up behind me that scare me, not so bothered about the ones coming towards me.
We are so glad that you enjoyed. Thank you so much for your kindness and your comment. Cheers 🤍 Jess & family x
I know how you feel driving all tense in a foreign country - I did it in Italy for the first time the other week and I think I aged 10 years!
For sure. Thanks for the comment. Cheers, Chris
Spring time in the UK is wonderful
J Stepanek, I love it! It's one of my favorite times of year. Other than the summer time. Thank you for watching and leaving me a comment. 🤍 Jess
Hahahahaha that was funny. What you have to realise, some of these roads are over a thousand years old, they wasn't build for cars.
Danna, thank you for watching, and I'm glad you found it funny!
I love the road but get a little scared at times. My family laughs at me all the time. 😉
🤍 Jess
@@DaydreamersBarn It did make me chuckle. Us Brits are use to narrow roads. Infact, most of Europe have narrow roads which you'll find out when you take some R&R.
Welcome to England!
Thank you! I love it and can't wait to explore England even more. Thank you for watching and the comment.
🤍 Jess
I don't bother anymore you don't gain much and the risk and stress isn't worth it usually
Chris has it all under control. 😂
I agree... I'm just worried about sinking or flying into a tree. 😂
🤍 Jess
I did have a little chuckle but I thought that you drove really good 👍.

The green Baize on the Card Table looks to be in a fair condition, why replace it?
Was thinking about replacing it because it's cracked down the center. Would you not recommend replacing it? 🤍Jess
Your lane discipline is very good.
Thank you, Harry!
You need to visit the Norfolk broads and North Norfolk coast.
I will look into that! Always down to explore. Thank you for the recommendation. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment 🤍 Jess
So glad you're not my passenger. I've driven in parts of the world where not only are the roads narrower than your video shows, but they're unpaved and have plenty of large pot holes. As for India, often the buses and trucks don't even bother with which side of the road they're supposed to be on.
Haha... I have learned to hold my fear in and just smile. The roads aren't bad at all. I just was not used to them, was all. 🤣
🤍 Jess
If it is any comfort to you, the road traffic death rate (per 100,000 people) in the UK is 2.9 p.a. In the US, it is 12.9 !
Oh, I completely agree with you! The people are so much more careful when driving and are courteous here in the UK than in the US. 🤍 Jess
Oh my your making me nervous lol
So sorry.. I'm still working on my nerves when driving. 🤍 Jess
I noticed a lot of tail gating ( getting too close to the car in front) which is a motoring offence in the UK.
Oh, James, thanks for the comment. Really, that was only when traffic was stopped or slowing down. 😉 Jess
While in Lincolnshire you must go to Hemswell Antique centre but on a Sunday it has a carboot sale with loads of dealers and lots of old Art Deco period buildings housing many Antique shops,I used to go there often and have picked up some good bits of stuff at good prices.
James, thank you. I will definitely check that out! Thanks for the recommendation! 🤍 Jess

When you see the national speed limit sign on those country roads, that's when you wish you had a manual gearbox. Imagine doing 60mph! Exhilarating much?!
Howard,
We only drive manual transmissions. 😉 A blast and makes the ride. 🤍 Jess
Modern auto boxes are as quick as a manual now. My Jaguar has 8 speeds.
Jaguars are lovely vehicles.

Thanks, Fat Bloke! Apparently, you for watching and leaving a comment!

Think you were going too fast / speed limit is exactly that. Not a target.

Mike, good one... 🤍 Jess
