How do you go from the frontman of one of the top bands of the late 90’s and early 2000’s to a staunchly conservative country singer who isn’t afraid to berate his fans at concerts and stir up controversy?
That’s what today’s video is all about - the story of why the internet hates Staind - or to put it even better - why they hate Aaron Lewis.
Before we dive in, I want to point out something pretty crazy about this story which is that Lewis has been at the top of the musical charts in two completely different genres - in rock as the frontman of Staind and outlaw country as a solo artist..
***
Alright, let’s get into it and take it back to the early 90’s - 1993 specifically - when
Staind vocalist Aaron Lewis and guitarist Michael Mushok (Ma-shock) met at a Christmas party in Springfield, Massachusetts. The band’s lineup was complete by 1995, the same year they started performing live, with the addition of drummer Jon Wysocki and bassist Johnny April.
They originally gained a following by touring throughout the Northeastern United States, covering songs from acts including Korn and Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine.
Fans of the band most frequently reference their first two albums - 1996’s Tormented and 1999’s Dysfunction, which had a heavier sound compared to their later records which became more radio friendly and arguably more watered down.
It was a chance connection with Limp Bizkit which really helped to propel the band into superstardom. In 1997, through an introduction from Aaron Lewis’s cousin named Justin Cantor, they got on the bill with Limp Bizkit - whose frontman Fred Durst later signed Staind to his Flip Records label in 1998.
In a 2000 interview with The Times Leader, Lewis talks about how their music has impacted their fans:
“Kids come up to me all the time and thank me for saving them through my lyrics. They say they wouldn’t be here talking to me if it wasn’t for what I was saying in those songs.”
In that same interview, Lewis talks about how opening for Korn’s Family Values Tour in 1999 was a big moment in their career and made the band feel like things were going really well for them.
((“We’re playing in front of much more people and things are going amazing. It’s really surreal.”))
Things shifted for the band in 2001 with the release of their third album, Break The Cycle, which contained the single called “It’s Been A While” which helped the album debut at the number one spot on the Billboard 200 charts.
A user on the Reddit perfectly summed up how this was a departure point for hardcore fans of the band:
“ They changed sound towards a radio friendly singalong poppy sound. A lot of people don't even know about tormented and Dysfunction, with their introduction with Staind starting at Outside and It’s Been A While, which while being inoffensive enough, aren't exactly 'heavy'.
No matter your personal opinion of the band, their commercial success was undeniable. During their time together as a band, they’ve had 5 chart-topping singles, released eight studio records and sold more than 15 million albums.
2001 would also be the time period when harsher critics would claim Staind became “butt rock” - “A style of hard rock & heavy metal music that is watered down both musically and lyrically to garner maximum radio play and mainstream acceptance as urban dictionary would put it.
If you’re wondering what other bands fit under this category - even though it’s somewhat a matter of opinion -, acts like theory of a deadman, three day’s grace, puddle of mudd, stonesour, seether and shinedown to give you an idea.
I’d also add Nickleback to that list.
Staind’s albums following “Break the Cycle” also topped the Billboard chart - 2003’s "14 Shades Of Grey" and 2005’s "Chapter V". In 2011, original drummer Jon Wysocki left the band and by July of 2012 the band had officially announced a hiatus. But that didn’t mean Aaron Lewis was going on hiatus, in fact he was about to go in a completely new direction musically speaking.
Aaron Lewis. Great rockstar or greatest rockstar? Also, should I do a full blown 20min plus history on Staind?
1. Neither 2. NO!
The only reason I watched this one was because it was under 10. There are very, very few videos that are over 10 minutes that I will watch.
Yes, do a 20-minute video. Would like to know more about him.

Are you ever not disappointed I think not lol were do these people come from
Yeah it is pretty good.
My impression of Aaron Lewis has always been that he definitely didn't grow up around many deep thinkers.
I've never listened beyond Staind's two big hits, but it seems like he's gone from writing about his daddy issues to writing right wing cliches.
I think you mean, "he definitely didn't grow up with people that think for themselves, listen, debate, and question the mainstream, hypnotized, masses"? Right? Isn't that what you meant? Oh wait...after reading your comment again, I see your blabbing about about left wing cliches from mom's basement. Nevermind.

@@davidtingley9978 As does your "impression" of Aaron Lewis. Is he your neighbor? Where do you form this impression? Because of this UA-cam video? Have you delved into his life and formed this "impression" based on knowledge or just on what you hear from others? Or is it because you and he were friends when you were younger? You seem to have opinions you like to share on public platforms based on your "impression". Using a word like "definitely" and following up with "...didn't grow up around deep thinkers"...yet your own post is just that. Not even an inch of deep thought. Just hyperbole on your opinion because...why??? Is it his viewpoint is different from your own? You disagree so now he is unable to think very deeply? It's ridiculous and then you are offended because I made fun of you? Geez man. Other people are different then you and nobody cares about your impression just like you could care less about mine, and I yours. But yeah you should share your opinions. TRUTH HURTS
Speaking strictly musically, some of his solo stuff is ok. But a lot of it feels like he’s playing the role, like Kid Rock does.
Aaron Lewis is about as outlaw country as a parking ticket.
Not surprised he went "country." Whitey Ford/Everlast went country and blues and hes more known for House of Pain. And his feud with Eminem.
I’m not a vegan, a vegetarian, not even against controlled hunting though I personally disavow it, but killing animals just for a political statement is just reprehensible, it shows no value for life and in fact shows a detachment from society, one step away from becoming a serial killer, and I’m serious about that. That is disturbing.
Killing coyotes isn’t for a political statement, or maybe you don’t have to deal with coyotes on a daily basis. Coyotes are like the worst rodent you can think of but they will also attempt to kill and eat small children.
@@stewpiddonkey4668 3 things, one everyone pretty much deals with coyotes, I live by two large parks with many coyotes, second your ignorance about coyotes killing children shows you just watch sensationalized news reports, coyote attacks on children are extremely rare, there is only a handful of recorded cases of a child ever being killed by a coyote, if you don’t believe me look up your county, state, or national wildlife reports, i have, just did too make sure I wasn’t just retorting to your response, finally, regardless of your opinion of coyotes, what Aaron Lewis did, if you listened to the upload, was a political statement, if you don’t believe me go back and listen to the video again.

They were probably never really friend-friends. Aaron Lewis was close to Fred Durst and Wes Borland had his own conflicts with Fred so calling them friends is pretty much a stretch.

His voice has range, power, and a ton of emotion, all with just the right amount of rasp. I have been to a LOT of great rock concerts in my life, but Aaron Lewis' solo show this year was one of the best performances I've ever been to. He told the stories behind his songs, did some covers, and he has a great sense of humor.

After learning more about Lewis I’m more of a fan than ever
The answer to your opening question is simple: money. I hung out with Aaron Lewis a few years ago. Being from the South, I can say that there is nothing country about the guy. He looked at the numbers and saw that Nu Metal was declining in popularity and Country was increasing, so he followed the money. That is the only thing he cares about. He is the true definition of a sell out.
I always call that grifting
@@rnrtruestories That is a very good word for it. I like that one.
If he was a sellout he would have stuck with sucking the music industries d**k but he got tired of that.
I don’t think he’s hurting for money with several hundred acres on the Tenntucky line while selling out smaller venues and having the voice to say what he wants to say without being gagged. You’re looking at the real sellouts in Hollywood pushing whatever they’re told to push.
The guy is a loudmouth a'ole, like Ted Nugent.

Mudshovel was the first i heard from them, i thouight it was pretty dark and heavy. Epiphany was mine and my passed away fiance's song. So its sentimental to me. And im sorry, the political left has not done us any favors eithers.

Never liked Staind, but Aaron’s Country is good. Love his song “Am I The Only One”. There’s a reason why his country has been successful.
bcuz the fanbase is driven by emotions and y’all will buy anything that that aligns with your bigoted views 😂
Aaron also forgot the lyrics to the National Anthem at a MLB game. For a conservative country singer to forget those particular lyrics is pretty damning. Dude is the definition of a hypocrite

I got backstage passes to a Staind show a few years ago through a friend. I remember being so excited to meet these guys and see them live. I have never more disappointed in my life, and I have met or known a lot of famous people. That just didn't seem to give a shit. I saw Staind in concert last night and Aaron Lewis seemed completely uninterested in being there. It was oddly off putting. Seemed like he just thought he was above being in a small city or something.

😮 I knew about Dysfunction, but never even heard of Tormented. I take it that is before Dysfunction?
Tormented rocks. I do recommend
Yeah Staind was great in the very late nineties and early 2000’s but it just seemed like we all wanted something consistent with the album Dysfunction and we kept getting something that was further away from Dysfunction each time and that was something that always confused me because they were at their best when they made heavy music, but I still was a fan and the album Chapter V was there for me during a tough time so If he wanted to travel into his country roots I really didn’t pass judgement on it.
Aaron Lewis is my hero
I loved them for their first three records. Torment and disfunction was two of my faves back in the day. I fell off of Staind at 14 Shades of Grey. I don't hate more radio friendly stuff, but a lot of their tunes then were played in this slow, melodic even tone, which kind of bored me.
I have no opinion of Aaron Lewis for his political beliefs one way or the other.
Dude can sing and play. Not a fan but Staind and Lewis have some good tunes. Agree 1000% politically with him also. FJB
Outlaw country it's kind of like a rock
The thing that always blew me away about Aaron is that he was absolutely one of the whiniest guys in the rock game. How do you go from writing songs about crying or being self-deprecating to writing songs telling people to man up and pull yourself up by your bootstraps? It just always felt so fake. I saw Staind in 1999 and was really into them for their first couple albums, I saw Aaron solo in 2012, the first half was all his country boy stuff and the second half was mainly slower acoustic Staind songs. He got angry at a couple in the crowd for talking during the first half and threatened to kick them out. I don't know, he can do what he wants, but I lost a lot of respect for him at that solo show. Only way I'd see them / him at this point is if he was at a festival I was already going to.
It's called the music industry. When you sign to a label, they pretty much tell you how you will act... I believe Lewis wrote a song about this. He hated performing with staind. But he also made a lot of money with staind. I guess the people have spoken.

Man, Staind and the whole Aaron Lewis situation, definitely was a kick in the teeth for my 8th grade self. I got into them with their music video for Mudshovel, and they quickly became a tentative favorite of mine. I was really digging their sound. I was even willing to give them "It's Been Awhile", as a one-off moment. But then, their musical tone started shifting, and it became clear that they weren't the same band anymore. That in and of itself, I mean, whatever. They sold out, but they got bills to pay and shit, so good on em. But then Aaron just becoming this incredibly insufferable meme of a person. It's fine to have political beliefs, but when they become your entire personality, that's just sad. Feel whatever way you want, but don't just become a set of news outlet talking points.
Yeah, people like Aaron talk about how they hate identity politics and virtue signaling, yet they 100% do it themselves all the time for their own side. Hypocrite. A thin skinned hypocrite too it seems.
When being a victim pays the bills.....
I thought Staind was in the mope rock category, rather than butt rock. Mudshovel was a good song, but everything after that was just Aaron whining and playing the victim. Oh, and I initially thought Robert Smith was on the cover of Dysfunctional. 😅

It is always weird to me when famous people feel a NEED to be all political all the time. It just alienates half the fan base.
Agreed. People who make politics their whole identity on both sides is sad
As if there is something wrong with "conservative values"? Maybe that is what the world needs a little bit of. Families with Mon and Dad! Acceptance of those different from ourselves! Love for community and not communism. Private orgs helping those in need instead of governmental gods. I stand with Aaron on the good simple rules we should all follow for a better planet for our children. AMEN
"Acceptance of those different from ourselves" is precisely the opposite of "conservative values." They demonize literally everyone. You people are a joke, and it's not a funny one.
> "conservative values"
> "acceptance of those different from ourselves"
that was one of the quickest oxymoronic turns i've seen in a long time
Never knew...
Letting dem Politics get in the way...still love Staind though ❤
