Glad to see this instead of a typical review! Stories 2 has a really cool combat system and the animations especially are some of the best of any turn based RPG ever. I haven't seen it yet but I hope my boy Yian Garuga has a well remade kinship attack
I’ve been using a bow mainly. I love messing with status ailments, and can be really powerful when paired with a hammer that compliments its ailment. Although the important thing for people to remember is that the game is all about playing your way, so don’t be afraid to just use what you like best. I’m personally mentally prepping myself for PVP to be dominated by ailments again lmao
Bow is great. You don’t “lose” a turn when you use charge like this review kind of suggests. The damage is just pushed back to the next turn. It also lets you delay your damage to a crucial moment like right after a Kulu’s rock breaks etc. And inconsistent status ailments is better than no ailments like GL. I think he was too harsh on it. It’s a great weapon
@@luxadia7310 Like the other person said, don't underestimate the charge skill on bow. It doesn't lose a turn, you just push your damage to the next It helps you pile on damage all in one turn, which can really turn around a PVP match where people like to spam their limited heals And in PVE, if you time a charged piercing attack to break a monster part, you can sneak in some extra critical hits while that monster is downed
You missed something on the Gunlance. The Gunlance, likely due to the Kinship-generating abilities of its unique skills, has a penalty to all Kinship generated through means OTHER than Shelling, Wyrmstake Cannon and Burst Fire. This means that while it can maintain its ammo gauge consistently, generating Kinship is another matter entirely, as it requires the enemy to target you and SPECIFICALLY you in order to make the most of it.
Nice review. It sounds like the biggest thing to keep in mind isn't just the weapon by itself but also the synergy the weapon has with your other weapons and monster allies, like the bow. Despite the low grade, you did make it a point to note the good things it does and it does sound like the bow is more of a support/item gathering weapon that you use for either set ups or to forcibly break monster parts that you've been hunting for who knows how long.
Nice review. It's very well organized and shows your opinions of each weapon type in a rather comprehensive, yet concise manner. Right now, in the demo, I am using Greatsword/Bow/Hammer. Hammer just fits my playstyle more than Hunting Horn. I'm still on the fence a bit between Sword and Shield and Greatsword, but Greatsword is kinda growing on me. Bow is an interesting choice. I'm starting to like Gunlance as an option, whereas before I hadn't considered it at all. They are both fine but the Bow's Charge feels a bit weird, since it consumes a whole turn (I know you get Power Shot for it). Seeing this, I can see the Gunlance's versatility and am tempted to use it instead. I'll put more thought into it.
One thing I will say about Hunting Horn for lategame is Evasion Riff and Awakening are really good for PvE content, evading massive AOEs that could sometimes be one shots is incredible. Meanwhile Awakening is amazing buff to put on your squad to help deal a lot more damage and tank a bit more as well. Though I will say Bloodsuck and especially Negate Ailments skills would probably be pretty solid for PvP. Negate Ailments is just extremely useful for that since a good bit of PvP sets are build around inflicting Skillseal on the enemies, forcing them to either waste a turn getting it off with a Nulberry Elixir and/or to switch out the Monstie inflicted with it.
True, I thought the Bow's Charge skill was off-putting, but since you always perform a Power Shot at the end of your turn when Charged, you technically don't lose a turn.
Great vid man, enjoyed the input and thoughts on each weapon. I personally really like the rapid bows, being able to do hammer or greatsword numbers in just 2 turns is so satisfying.

@@caseyalbright2762 well I'm enjoying it more than pokemon so this is gonna be a good series as long as they add monsters to the franchise it will keep going. Forgot to mention: Evasion Rift, which helps your entire party dodge one attack, is exclusive to Music type. Is this why you have it highlighted at 4:53 ?
Is the rider actually good at dealing damage? In the first game most of your damage came from the monstie and the rider is mostly there to buff and heal.
So far it feels like basic damage is just under your monsties for me. But your rider is way more flexible and able to take advantage of greater damage opportunities. So a lot more combat than raw supporting compared to Stories 1.
In my play style, I have a really hard time replacing the bow. I always shoot (heh heh) for the Double Attack, using a Kinship(L) talisman, and always switching my monster to suit the right attack pattern to counter the enemy into a Dual Attack. Not only does this negate the enemy’s attack that round, it also charges the kinship gauge very quickly. Usually 2, 3 at most, turns and it’s fully charged. And since riding your Monster fully heals you and mostly heals your monster, I can strategize when to use that, or when to use the Kinship Attack, which also negates the enemy’s attack that turn. The gunlance, while really fun and works well in certain play styles, I find doesn’t charge my Kinship gauge nearly as fast. Either that or I’m just using it wrong. But since I always aim (hee) for Dual Attacks, the HtH bonuses offered by the gunlance doesn’t really benefit me all that much. So yeah! The fact that this game lets you pick your play style, and they’re all really valid, is pretty cool.
Probably not new weapon types, but we will get new weapons based on dlc monsters. Kulve taroth sns, gs, bow, gunlance, hammer, and hh. Nothing else I'm sure. It would be cool for them to add more types in the future but doubtful.

Really think you were too hard to Bow. I might be biased since it's my favorite weapon, but I feel I dish out the most consistent damage in both short and long battles with it. What are you talking about? IG was the best weapon in MH4, got serious utility and smooth controls in MHW, then recieved major aerial damage buffs and new kinsect playstyles in MHR. You wanna whine just because it's not in MHS2? Next you'll complain about Longsword, lol.
@@Spyger9 wow, a non-IG main giving input on a weapon used once. @@___------ As an IG main (1300+ hunts in MHGU, 1100+ in Rise), where were they incorrect? They never said that they only used IG once, everything they said was essentially spot on. I've had more fun with IG in Rise than I ever did in MHGU, it wasn't shafted in the slightest, imho.
@@97dusk As someone who prefers ground combat over aerial combat(cause it looks cooler), it's a shafting in my eye. Aerial attacks were a bonus IG had to give it an edge over the other weapons. But now, the dev team seems too focused on aerial considering that now it needs to compete with every other weapon that can also jump in the air. Because of this, ground combat has stagnated, and aerial's current state, although buffed, is still not at ground combat level. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun weapon even in Rise, but it feels to me like an "it's just there" weapon and only an afterthought. Don't even get me started on how they just gave its only real move away to lance(lance needs it), or how they made the kinsect system into even more of a gimmick. Even the rampage skills for IG feel like a joke. You'd probably understand my mentality better if I told you I preferred Recall Kinsect over Diving Wyvern not only cause it looks flashier personally but also out of spite for locking the only recent real move behind a switch skill.(I'm also a valor user over aerial user in GU) I'll spare you from my essay, but let me know if you want to know exactly what my gripes are with the changes.
Bow main in MHS2 here, that also happens to be fashionably late. I personally found the Bow to be more fun to use? The Gunlance's biggest weakness is that in order to make effective use of it, the enemy has to target you, and specifically you. In co-op with randoms, I've found that teammates will, more often than not, use a Kinship skill when you _finally_ get a chance to engage in a head-to-head. There's also the chance of them interrupting the monster entirely (such as using a flash bomb to knock down Velkhana when its airborne). It's really hard to get the Gunlance going if any of these scenarios (or all of them) are constantly happening throughout the battle. With Bow, I don't really have to worry about any of that. No head-to-head coming my way, or a teammate is using a Kinship skill? It's a safe turn to charge. Is a part about to break, which'll topple the monster? Charge and be ready to deal intense damage next turn. As others have also no doubt said, the biggest thing about Bow is its synergy with Hammer, which will yield even more damage if you're lucky enough to pull it off, as it's also head-to-head/double attack dependent. After this video was posted, the Zephra Gust (Boltreaver) was released in the second title update, which has Rapid Shot and Power Coating; my literal dream bow. Nothing's more satisfying than being able to get Rapid Shot + Power Shot all ready to go right when the monster topples. Hellblade's Bow is no slouch either; Pierce Shot and Power Coating, with a small chance to inflict Blastblight. Edit: In regard to Hunting Horn, it's also worth mentioning that Music type Hunting Horns get access to Evasion Riff, which allows the entire party to evade an attack. Against endgame monsters like Molten Tigrex, Gold Rathian, and _especially_ Fatalis, you'll always want to have one on hand. In regards to Fatalis specifically, it's actually more or less *mandatory* for both players to have one.
Nice vidéo but considering you are using your own expérience to judge the weapons it's not very reliable. Personaly i prefer bows to the other one and think that sword and shield is better than great sword but like you it's my own opinion :)))
You're wrong on so many levels. It's not just random chance of rock-paper-scissors. You have to predict what the enemy does and adapt to what your allies will do which greatly benefits from your knowledge of the monsters. You can switch weapons for different purposes, use items and create combos with your allies. To call it a "glorified rock-paper-scissors" would be a gross understatement of the system's depth. Also the combat looks amazing. Just look at something like Pukei-pukei kinship attack and tell me that's not some of the best most wholesome stuff ever happened in turn based combat!
Well most RPGs are pretty much a "glorified RPS" they Work on the same principle X beats Y, Y beats Z and Z beats X ( ofc is more complicated than that but is the same as this game just that this one make the basis simple to understand)

@@___------ I have around 1k hunts with IG. It's my secondary in MHW (after HH) and main in MHR (since they removed HH).
But clearly you're just having fun spewing random bullshit, and aren't interested in using your brain. So carry on and don't let me bother you. 🤣
@@___------
As an IG main (1300+ hunts in MHGU, 1100+ in Rise), where were they incorrect?
Is it me or does your character look like Huey from the boondocks
can bow counter attack
This man sounds like reverto
I really can't express my disappointment that is isn't longswords

You can buy an upgrade using bottle caps on the melynx to increase your slots

What combat? You just play a glorified Rock Paper Scissors game
Not at all actually. That's what I thought at first.
"glorified" lmao no.
Well most RPGs are pretty much a "glorified RPS" they Work on the same principle X beats Y, Y beats Z and Z beats X ( ofc is more complicated than that but is the same as this game just that this one make the basis simple to understand)
Rock paper scissors is a cool game
It's a certified childhood classic, heck even adults play that game
