Leading messaging app Whatsapp today told the Delhi High Court that if it is forced to break end-to-end encryption, it will leave India.
India is the biggest market for Whatsapp - with over 400 million users.
It is owned by Meta, the company behind Facebook. Meta’s lawyers were arguing in a case - challenging 2021 India’s Information Technology Rules. The Rules require companies like Meta to identify the first originator of information.
Whatsapp told the court that the rules violate the fundamental rights of users.

@@yaphonghor4409 wechat is a Chinese app which has full access to all data on its servers. It collects all user data and sells it to its clients including sharing it with the Chinese government. It has been known to block anti Chinese messages. I am not sure India wants to share it's information with China

I always feel enlightened by the news Palki Sharma reads on this channel, she explains every bit of the information to the extent each listener needs. I am very thankful for such reporting. If WhatsApp leaves India (though the chances are poor), it will be disheartening for all Indians. Indians are deeply involved in the WhatsApp conversations. even before the new IT laws, the police or other investigating agencies were able to trace the originator of messages. so the new Law is not so much about tracing the origins of messages but rather being able to read private messages. hence it could be a dangerous tool in the hands of unscrupulous people in power
