The reason why it took so long because a lot of handhelds are coming out and now it's getting harder to decide which one is good for your budget or anybody's budget so definitely be patient if nobody is answering your questions or create a video towards a response to your question
Since I bought my RG35XX-H my Switch and PS4 collect dust. I still use the other consoles but the H is my daily driver. Never leave the house without it and since then I play more than ever. As a husband and a family man I just don't have the time to sit down to play on the TV and the Switch is just to big for every day carrying. The H is my main PS1 handheld. Street Fighter Alpha 3, Colin McRae Rally, Chrono Trigger became some of my favourite gaming experiences. Thanks Russ, you are the BEST!
I bought a Steam Deck in November of 2022. I bought the original RG35XX two months later in January of 2023. I hardly touched my Steam Deck, my PC, my Switch, 3DS, you name it, over the course of 2023. I decided I wanted to try the RE2 and RE3 Remakes by Halloween, so I did get back into PC gaming at that point. I got the Plus in January of 2024 and while it's taken somewhat of a backseat (I got a new PC in August of this year), it's still my favorite game playing device, ever. PortMaster with AM2R and Undertale is what I'm currently working on.
You don't even know how perfectly timed this video is, I've JUST started seriously considering buying an anbernic device and was looking for this EXACT video just this morning
I received my first handheld yesterday thanks to your channel after watching for so long, caved for the RG40XX and been having an insane blast thanks to your tutorials on getting KNULLI and shaders, big props.
I'm happy we have so much variety with the XX line of Handhelds. Sadly you might want to add nine to the list because I've Heard Anbernic is making a RG-ARC XX. 😅
There are 3 new handheld devices every month because people keep buying them like they are candy. No business would keep doing something if it weren't profitable. Just saying imo.
I bought the RG40XXV in blue, because I couldn't believe how good the design is in relation to the price. Thanks for your content. Just discovered you some weeks ago and watched a lot of your stuff since then. :)
You can use a USB charger with a higher current rating. The device will only draw current up to its rated maximum, but a charger with a higher-than-required current rating will work fine and won't damage your device.
The tier list was an excellent idea! This video answered many of the questions I had as someone new to the hobby. I'd love to see more content like this!
Great vid as always Russ! One big caveat to this video is that Russ helped in the conception of the RGcubeXX, so there's a good hint of bias there. I mean im sure it's pretty close to heart if you helped make it. Also, the gap between these ratings are considerably low for the most part, as most of their pros and cons may even be very situational. I mean i wouldnt endure the heat of the sun just so i could appreciate that my screen's still readable, you know? Personally, i dont like square screens. I had the RGB30 because of all the hype it got for its highres screen, and it turned out i hate the screen where almost every system has additional black border. The high resolution is definitely nice, but something in the shape of it doesnt sit well with me. Square screens to me are compromises with 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9. I still prefer good ol' 4:3 or 16:9. Objectively, i think the best ones are the 35XX H, the 40XX H and the 40XXV. The dpad "flaws" are honestly a nitpick. They have dual analog sticks too which is nice with the PSP and PSX as remapping camera controls modernizes the experience with older games, and also as extra hotkeys. Doom PS1, Vagrant Story, Alien Resurrection, etc, benefit greatly from a second analog. I like the SP a lot too, but more because of the nostalgia factor. The flip's screen protection doesnt really feel like an objective deal breaker. The lack of analog sticks puts it below the ones with analogs, but that said, i still think it is one of the best handhelds to get if you like a flip or has SP nostalgia. But as Russ mentioned, the biggest difference in these devices are preference-based. Except for the 28xx. I hate that thing from the first time i saw it, and of course, the abomination that is the vertical 2024.
Out of all the XX devices, I only have the SP for now, but I absolutely love it. I’m really intrigued by the Cube as well, so I may snag that as well to add to my collection. I *did* just order a TrimUI Smart Pro and Odin 2 Pro recently though, so I’ll hold off on adding anything more for the time being
Same for me regarding the SP and the Cube. I love my SP. I want the Cube, but the original Cube because the T820 is just so much more powerful than the H700 which means I can play N64, Sega Saturn & DC no problem. But, I don't want to pay $160+ for it. I wish the CubeXX could play N64, DC & Saturn better because that $60+ price point is good. Even tho I'd prefer the DPAD on top like the CubeXX has, I'll pass on the CubeXX and hopefully wait for an Anbernic November sale so I can pick up an og Cube for a bit cheaper
Perfect timing on this as there are so many options to chose from! I keep going back and forth on the various models, and this comparison was helpful as this will be my first retro handheld. I am always a sucker for a matrix breakdown and you added the tiered ranking!!!!! Thanks (as always) Russ!
I love H and it's my everyday device. I use it way more than my Steam Deck. They could probably eliminate 3 of these models and the line up would feel less bloated, but as it stands, no one is being held by gun point to buy any of these. The only people really complaining are the people who want Anbernic to make a T820 device at H700 prices.
Considering all the comments about how many of these Anbernic makes…I’ve gone back and forth on being for and against it. I’ve landed in the realm of “I don’t HAVE to buy all of these, so how is it bad that a bunch of models exist? Having choice is nice. It means for a slightly better handheld than the one I have, I could get the same form factor (351M to 35XXH). Or I could get something retro (SP). Or I could get something easier on my eyes and hands (Cube). If Anbernic had only one solution at the budget price, it would be a take it or leave it situation. If say the H was the only model, then anyone looking for a vertical option, or one with stacked shoulders, would look elsewhere. So to me, variety is fine. At least they aren’t releasing these as incremental chip upgrades with the same form factor at this pace.
I already had the RG35XX original, and I didn't think I needed another. But once I got my hands on the H model, I can see why there's so many different variations. It is much more comfortable to hold, without a doubt, and that screen is to die for. Probably my favorite handheld Anbernic has come out with.
I've been using my fast charger with the rg35xx plus for months without issues. Obviously the charging speed is very slow but so far it's working. Maybe I've been lucky.
I’ve had no regrets with my RG 35XX H. Fits great in my pocket (it’s smaller than my phone!) and the performance is phenomenal for the price. Not to mention, I think I audibly “squee’d” the first time I beheld it. Despite not looking anything like a Game Boy Color, it somehow still has that nostalgic quality to it. Irrational, maybe, but it has a special place in my heart all the same.
I have been honest, I was not prepared for him to say that Anbernic released a teaser for their next device in this video. I should have expected it tho lol.
For me the 40xxh would have been the best choice but they dropped the ball with the dpad and the heating issue. So now, i would like the cubexx but modified with a 4:3 display. And if they can put the higher resolution 4:3 4"... It would be grat.
Agreed. I've gone with the 40xxV to avoid the dpad and heat issue but it's not as comfortable as a horizontal form factor... and if I got for the cube xx I'm back down to a smaller screen for 4:3 which why I wanted a 40xx so bad 😢
@@mattwood3157 yeah, that's why I went for the rg arc. Got it on a sale for $65 including shipping and VAT and I loved it, and then 2-3 weeks later the display broke. Had to return it and now I'm $16 back for the return shipping so I'm hesitant on ordering another ( and they are now costing around $85 I think) But the thing was great, comfortable grips, stacked shoulder buttons, great dpad, good display (before it broke), i didn't care much about the 6 button layout, but the 3 big buttons felt great.
I think at this price point and with an OLED screen not being an option, I prefer the clamshell option. My DS and SP have survived to this day, mostly due to the design and near-indestructibility.
I own every one of them. These are the best budget handhelds ever created. solid build quality, controls, and performance. They don't do anything the best but they do everything the best in their price category.
Great video. After a lot of thinking I decided that my first handheld is going to be the Miyoo mini v4. It looks perfect for my needs, after that I will definitely check an Anbernic device.
I would love for all handhelds you review to get scored like this It's subjective yes, but it really really helps comparing the flood of devices and having one big chart would be nice
Also worth noting that I was interested in the device when I discovered it, but was SOLD on it when Retro Game Corps review for it came out. That, combined with the fact that they give you a Klarna option??? $14 payments aren't so bad over a few weeks for this! It's almost a steal, honestly
My Cube XX is in the mail now, can't wait to try it out and really looking forward to going back from Android to Linux handhelds (and trying out muOS). Really love the SP for the nostalgia, but since it has little extra power (though only partial DC/N64) I want the thumbsticks.
Hey Russ, I would love another Lenovo Legion Go update video! Just to see how much you still use it and maybe any little tips and tricks you’ve picked up since the last. Might not be enough for a whole video but I’d love to see what you’ve been doing with it.
These are all great options. I currently own the 35XXH and the SP models. I prefer the H since it has better speakers, more pocketable and joysticks. The RG CubeXX is nice and seems comfortable to hold, but I do have an RGB30 that has similar performance.
40XXH is my go-to for playing anything PS1 and earlier. I wish the analog sticks were more recessed like their older handhelds but other than that the form factor is nearly perfect to me. Nice big screen, comfy in the hand, but still pocket-friendly, about the same size as a modern smartphone with a case on it. I don't know if my unit has the supposedly improved D-pad or not, but I can say that I personally haven't had any issues with it. The heat also hasn't bothered me but I've mostly been playing GBA and the Ocarina of Time port. I also really like the regular 35XX+. I had a Miyoo Mini Plus for a while but it was giving me hand cramps, the bit of extra height on the 35XX+ makes a significant difference for me.
Being my main objective to play NDS games, wich one would be the more fitting? My guess is the Cube because of its bigger display that could hold better both screens of the NDS, am I right?
I really enjoy my 35xxSP and can't wait for my cubexx to come in to replace my RGB30, so I guess I agree with your list. I am mildly interested in one of the 4" screen models, but with the "arc" version being rumored I might wait for that one since it offers something different, and it will presumably solve the issue with the previous "arc" devices which was the price.
I really enjoy my RG40xxv. I just bought it recently and the small bezels with that 4 inch screen and being able to play most of the psp games i enjoy on top of it having that old school game boy feel. My retroid pocket 4 pro has started collecting a bit of dust because I just wasnt a fan of using android. I like the play out of the box style that Linux offers with either the base OS or other OS's like Mu. Vertical is just the way to go for playing retro games for me and its hard to go back to anything else.
Oh heck, this video is aimed directly at me. With the XX Cube I’m feeling ready to upgrade my RG351M, but I’ve also seen so many budget models I’m unsure which is right for me.
hero..you can sell me the RG-351M..to complete my set of RG-350P/RG-350M/RG-351P..it's a little confusing because there's a 351MP apparently..not sure if it's the same as 351M or not..
@@markianclark9645 pretty sure the M and MP are different. The P is for like “premium” or something. As for selling this, it’s tempting but my current plan was if/when I get a new one, I’d hand this off to a family member. Sorry about that 😓
@@herogear_art ..of course you will give to family..I would too if they wanted it..I thought the P must be for plastic..but metal / plastic halves seems silly..so it was confusing..premium makes more sense
RG40XX H may be warm but it doesn't destroy the battery like the others! When the battery is on top of the chip, it shields from temp but it makes it runs out faster...I like the design of 35xx more but the 4" screen is great
Companies are doing similar things in the computer keyboard space . They make a board that is, for all intents and purposes, perfect for 90% use cases and then flood the market with variation of layouts to cover all size and shape options so that regardless of what you're looking for, you're likely going to walk away with a board manufactured by the same company. So they profit regardless. But I went for the 40XXV. It's easily the nicest looking of the lot with a nice big screen. With MUoS it's pretty much perfect for everything I'd ever want to throw at it (PSone and earlier)...and for anything a bit more taxing...I have a Steam Deck exclusively set up for emulation. And that can go all the way up to Switch if I was inclined (I generally cut off at OG Xbox/PS2/GameCube)
As a thermal regulation engineer, I'd invert those "heat transfer" rankings. If the outside gets hot, that means it probably has good thermal design instead of keeping the heat inside. The "S tier" models with no perceptible heat are the ones most likely to overheat or damage themselves.
I have the RG40XXV on Knulli, it's a great size my favourite form factor is vertical have been quite impressed with it. Also got the arc-s which I think is very overlooked, it's perfect for fighters and sega with the 6 button layout, great screen (same as the 40XX) and nice size.
The H reminds me of my first Anbernic, which was the RG350M, minus the metal body, of course. I own a Retroid Pocket 3+, looking to see what the 5 is like, but so, so tempted by the RG35XX SP. I used to have a GBA SP that looked like a NES, tempted to get those stickers + Buttons from Sakura Retro Modding to recreate it!
The thumbnail for this is perfection
It’s true
10/10 for creativity
Took the words out of my mouth
Bingo. Full agreement. Made me chuckle this morning.
Almost perfect, just one device missing to add the question mark.
Finally an answer to the same question I've had for a year now...

There werent 8 of these a year ago :p
That Soundgarden shirt though 😍
Fun fact about Chris Cornell: the leaked photos of him after he... Ya know, were taken by my wife.
I find myself watching your coverage whether or not I’m interested in a device because they’re JUST NICE AND CHILL

Dope!
Got a RG35XX-H and my wife kept stealing it. Bought her one as well. 😂 Hands down the best form-factor/size/bang for the buck.
Love how you embrace devices for the options and not just make rant videos on how there is too many
I'm 3 weeks sober now and haven't bought any since
Tech sobriety is so underrated
listen to the voices… buy the mini…
Few months ago his favourite RG35XXH now not anymore, that's how quick Anbernic device breeds and improved.
You don't even know how perfectly timed this video is, I've JUST started seriously considering buying an anbernic device and was looking for this EXACT video just this morning
Get the SP dude. I got the original from two years ago and the SP. SP is awesome if your traveling!
It’s unfortunately not perfectly timed for me because I JUST ordered an RG350xxh last night and wish this video would’ve come out last night

Holding out for the Anbernic RG*XXX 😏
Nahhh
that's crazy
Rated Grade 🔞? Naughty naughty! 😏😂
The best handheld to play the Jackbox Naughty Pack! 😂😂
just wait until they launch the "freaky plus" edition a week later
With extra vibration motors, and "Wii mote" attachment
the rg35xxH is absolutely amazing, great little device small, pocketable but powerful enough
Thank you! I've been looking for this exact video for the past few days, while trying to choose my first retro handheld.
Waiting for the RG40XXSP! C'mon Anbernic!
Gets a vote from me too!
Would be an instabuy for me
Waiting for mine too I missed out on all the Pokémon’s after yellow so going to see if I can get them , any worth playing ?

Russ just over there doing the good work whilst rocking god tier tees, excellence as always!
I have one of them (35xxH) love it.
40xxh was also appealing when it dropped
No problem with the chipset..i love all of them
can’t wait to get my hands on an SP. already got my SD cards to install custom firmware and all my games!
In before channel name change to RGCXX 😂 love the roundup something I can reference when someone asks me what to get around the holidays.
I usually buy the more expensive versions of these and still end up selling them. The only ones I've kept are the RG552 and the RG405M
That thumbnail. That's both hilarious and a good question.
Would be nice if they eventually give the 40xxv a 720 screen and stereo speakers. I'd pay a little extra for it.
As a thermal regulation engineer, I'd invert those "heat transfer" rankings. If the outside gets hot, that means it probably has good thermal design instead of keeping the heat inside. The "S tier" models with no perceptible heat are the ones most likely to overheat or damage themselves.
Soundgarden shirt is fire !
There are soon to be 9! Ladies and gentlemen, introducing... drumroll... The RG Arc XX!
According to the leaks, there is a ARCXX coming also! 6 face buttons! Love it
hhh, sorry, you talked about it :)
I wish they'd make a bunch of RK3566 devices instead of H700. I wonder if they just got a good deal on a batch of these chips.
I have the RG40XXV on Knulli, it's a great size my favourite form factor is vertical have been quite impressed with it. Also got the arc-s which I think is very overlooked, it's perfect for fighters and sega with the 6 button layout, great screen (same as the 40XX) and nice size.
Sold all my 3.5" Handhelds except the RG35XX+. When you're older, 4" is the new standard.
Damn that black transparent New Rg35xx look so cool 🔥
Immediate like just for the Badmotorfinger t-shirt
The SP is king 👑
The H reminds me of my first Anbernic, which was the RG350M, minus the metal body, of course.
I own a Retroid Pocket 3+, looking to see what the 5 is like, but so, so tempted by the RG35XX SP. I used to have a GBA SP that looked like a NES, tempted to get those stickers + Buttons from Sakura Retro Modding to recreate it!
