I think Mew could really benefit from this kind of run, being in the Medium Slow group and of course having access to all TMs, but struggling with Brock due to lack of good moves to deal with him.
I think Mew could get a huge improvement in the vanilla runs as well but I'm just taking my time these days. I think a redo of Mew in general is in the future.
I love the idea of runs like this that are optimized to the absolute limit of what's possible! The egg move transfers from Gen 2 are super fascinating, and there are definitely a lot of Pokemon that benefit from having those extra moves. Plus, the mental image of Alakazam punching its way through Kanto is hilarious.

Oh yea, completely agree but I try not to think too hard about it. Really enjoyed this new format - there are a bunch of Pokémon that really benefit from the extra gen 2 move transfers that could be super fun to look at. Love the skips we see here as well - gives me real nostalgia for transfering a Cut user so that the S.S. Anne never leaves. Clefable (or Tangela?) with Amnesia. Thanks for a great year of runs. This is a fun video to mix things up. Giving better moves to some interesting pokemon at the start is definitely cool. I am definitely interested in seeing what you do with it!
The fighting dojo being more xp than nugget bridge was interesting to me. The split data is presented in an easy to read format and provides good context. I like it.
Great feedback. Yea, the exp thing was something I was interested in and added up to see. It's good to know how it looks in terms of numbers. It's kind of the point of the stats and what not so people can see what's actually going on and see the process that way.

Raw exp numbers don't come up very often in traditional solo runs so having that there was refreshing🎉
Very true. I liked it from the vs video but didn't know what to do with it but knew I wanted to use it more. The thing is that I do not want to manually input data so I went in during December and made it auto subtract splits from stuff I choose so we can see where a solo Pokemon is in comparison. The fact I do a lot of runs kind of lets me know what I should use to be accurate! Glad you liked the exp talk too. It's interesting!
I got regular Mew plans sometime. I think it can be pushed much further. I ran it in a video years ago and then I did it over a year ago when I had Covid but I think there's more to that run.
That was fantastic. The split data is a cool thing to do, I think. I don't remember the other questions. But damn, I'm hoping to see more of these. I'd love to see just how far you can push a mon in gen 1 like this.
Likely some tweaks, work on some other things, and look back on it in time. The first attempts rarely go great. Hell, in 2021 I tried cross gen runs and it failed too. People told me they didn't like it and just look at how they caught on and how many others want to do it now lol.
This is extremely interesting I never knew you could trade pokemon back from gen 2 I'd like to see the Mewtwo run to see how fast it would be compared to a regular Mewtwo run if the missed levels would affect it significantly or if it'd be ok
I really like this idea of pushing the limits of Pokemon and comparing these runs. I'm a bit of a nerd, so the split data you included in the video was pretty helpful to see.
Huh. Y'know, this is the first time a UA-camr meant it when they said they'd use authentic hardware to play for a vid-- 2:33 ...oh. Carry on. Seriously though, I like the ideas at play here. I never really used the cross-gen functionality of Stadium 2, nor the Time Capsule in GSC, so it's cool to see those concepts emulated. Heck, I just like the idea of getting to pick out a free TM for a run's Pokemon. Call it a gift. Between the uncanny routing and the Green sprites to match, this video kinda threw me for a loop myself. That said, videos like these could be a fun challenge, and fun to watch. Heck, it's just cool to see Alakazam and other stronger Pokemon stampede through Kanto with an unorthodox but effective route. As others suggested, new strategies like these could give lower-tier 'Mons a glowup. Besides? As someone who finds it hard to watch videos longer than a half-hour these days, I have some real respect for the speed boosting strategies.
I usually stick around 30-50, just whenever the video is done. I don't keep a tight restraint on things unless it's getting extra girthy. Something over an hour is something I'll trim down. I know some people like the stuff that long but personally it's super grating to see a 90 minute to 2 hour video these days.
Alakazam never disappointed us!! Champion's exeggutor and blastoise are soooooo close. Matt, I love this swift swim man, lets get more of this! Happy New Year and wish you a good one in 2024. TOMESTONER BROTHER!
Real one! This was a cool video with the different routing. Cool to see the gen 2 move set for ole kazam. Really enjoy your content man. Happy New Year!
Late to the party on this one, but these twist runs are always fun because its something different from what most seem to do. These 'what if' videos are super fun. I used to do this type of thing as a kid. Like, for example, since waterfall existed in gen 1 I'd trade pokemon back to red and play using moves they would never have. Kinda pointless, but it was really fun.
I like this run format it's an interesting take on the game. It's similar to rby challenges super minimal battles but feels more focused on speed. You are a real one glm.
I’ve been tinkering with it for a while since I saw a lemonade in the PC during a randomizer and trading HM Pokémon over was something we used to do as kids. Interesting stuff!
I liked this new type of video. Maybe doing different styles of runs with different rulesets would be a good way to break up the monotony of gen 1 solo runs
It's pretty interesting. It might even have potential to get some moves on mons that normally get walled by Brock early on but shine after. Seeing that in action could be interesting
this is probably my third time watching this video, this style of run is super intriguing to me. it has me thinking of truly how low some pokemon can go. ive tried a few runs myself but with only 1 transfer move and no transfer TMs and ive had a blast. also i dont know if this is faster but you only actually need 2 HM pokemon, Charizard can learn Cut, Strength, Dig, and Fly and Staryu/mie can learn Surf, Flash, and for gen 2 can learn Waterfall and Whirlpool. it might not be faster cause of navigating through all 4 of the HM moves on charizard could be slower than having strength, fly, and cut on different pokemon, but its just something to think about.
You hit the nail on the head with too many moves on one Pokemon feels like a time loss. Even in a normal run if you accidentally teach surf in front of strength, it can significantly bleed time on the run. Having a cut user with cut at the top, fly at the top, and strength at the top is the way to go rather than fumbling through all the HMs on a single Pokemon. It feels foreign and I don't like how it feels.
I like it as something different but more as a series of occassional one-offs. Splits were nice though sometimes I like to forget the timer's there so limited displaying is best
I got some solid stuff planned. It's back to full swing but hopefully January is on track but I will be streaming with Scott hopefully in a couple of days.
I feel like this kind of format would allow certain pokemon with rough beginnings be more on par with their some of their more elite same type counter parts. For an example, Golduck I'd imagine on paper having a really tough early game, but start that Duck with ice beam or psychic (gen 2 egg move) and it suddenly has the makings for a much smoother run. Id like to see you do a race on Mew vs Mewtwo both using these rules, who has the faster time? Mew's diverse move pool vs mewtwo's elite stats. I am sure Mewtwo would win but with your elite routing who knows.
That does sound pretty fun, both ideas. This is really just random ideas and trying to throw it out to see how it does. Currently it's on pace to be one of the worst performing videos of 2023 lol.
I wonder if you could cut further time off by learning Recover and transferring some elixers so you could skip trips to the Pokemon center. How much work was Thunder Punch really putting it? I really like the experience numbers, by the way.
Thunder punch was pretty good for Misty but recover isn’t in the transfer from Gen 2 box so I don’t think it would be valid. It’s just something I learn naturally in Gen 1 that I’d be giving myself just because lol. Elixirs are a solid idea but I think baby steps is the way to go. It really matters how well the video performs but it’s not looking good! Despite changing my days, moving my time up, etc, some people can’t help but step on your toes lol.
Is that Castlevania I hear in the beginning? The last time I noticed out of place music in the intro it was resident evil. You have a nice taste in games outside of Pokemon haha
Traded pokemon are a really interesting idea. Can you do a run with the traded exp boost intact, I wonder if you would save time or run into issues with your pokemon overleveling and disobeying you. Also I think the official speedrun rules dont mention trading at all so you might even steal a wr.
I’ve tried the trades exp a long time ago and the long and the short of it is that it’s kind of boring. It’s just straight rng if your Pokémon listens and you deal with that for a while, rush the relevant gyms, and then it’s a non issue. Trade exp boosts aren’t a fun mechanic in a solo run.
That's was really interesting. Ever since rby challenges was exploring that route with super minimum battles ,I thought how cool it's going to be if some great pokemon could try it out to see if it's possible.😮 But in terms of routing it for speed , that's was really odd but in a good way . I'd like to see more pokemon try it out.😊 And by the way the spilt data looks nice, I really liked the color scheme. Also I wish that tombstoner was a ghost/ground move, with gen 2 cruse mechanic,so that for ghost types the move has a different affect than other types. Maybe you should make it someday.🫡
I've heard some people toss out sub hour times but I really do think that's impossible. Getting into the 1h 20m range was rough enough. It was just something different to kind of change it up and it seems that mostly the opinions is that regular runs are better, and I'd probably agree. Curse mechanics would be interesting but it's prob my most hated move, haha. If I have to watch one more Crystal run with Curse on the learnset at the end I'm going to cry lmao. I could do it though! Not the ghost part, but the normal curse effect.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I think that it an interesting concept to explore,it may at times not being the fastest approach, but it is interesting to see that in action, considering speedruns. Tombstoner have to be a damaging move ,but it could have a special effect for ghost types like curse has. Maybe it could be like a tarping move with less accuracy for ghost types with high base power and for the other types it could be like rollout with 95 accuracy but with way less base power.🤔 Or something like that... This way it won't be a clone of the move you dislike in a way.😁 I'm not sure how possible that could be..
Yea we'll be back to some interesting stuff to start the new year. Classes start next week and I got a busy week but Scott and I are going to do a couple of blind runs later in the week hopefully and that will be cool. Ha, with how some people are about adding moves in general, they'd sacrifice me at the stake for making up moves. I changed TM28 to Tombstoner a long time ago and it just confused a bunch of people lmao.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Awesome 😁. More runs from you and Scott is going to be fun, for sure. Tombstoner is the real tm 28😂😂, but Blaine is insisting that dig is the real one. Probably he is afraid of some ground sausages🤣🤣.
This is crazy awesome! If you can find a way to have the him users in the PC with the moves already, as well as the items in the PC, holy crap. There's gotta be something, They have a potion in the PC before you start the game
The main problem is if you add something that was never there, the game breaks. On the community tab it was when Giovanni just wasn't in his gym lol. Whether you use a save editor or use 3rd party software, making an item slot that had nothing now have something and the same with Pokemon, it does not like it.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Ohhh OK, makes sense. That sucks tho... Amazing playthrough! I did not expect Alakazam to beat the Champ with that much of the game cut out! Can't wait to see what you come up with next, and yes please more of these!
I think that this is an interesting idea, though it does feel a bit asynchronous with the fact that you are still replacing your starters. So you're doing everything "legally possible" but still starting with a fully evolved Pokemon at a level you can't legally obtain and that doesn't suffer from level cap. It isn't that different than a normal run in that regard, but just some food for thought.
You could just trade over an Alakazam using the same method as the HM users. That would mean that it gets boosted EXP too, which would add both a boon and a curse, being that if you level too much then they start ignoring your orders. Plus badge boosts may be harder to time. It would be different than a normal speedrun still, because you are only using one Pokemon for all the battles, and it's not necessarily the fastest. @@GymLeaderMatt1987
~2:44 -- ironically I'm one of the few with all the required Nintendo Official Hardware (N64, stadium 1, stadium 2, 2 transfer packs, and 2 old Gameboys as well as 2 old gameboy colors). However, I would probably just use an emulator too since my hardware is starting to get soft in the head in it's old age.
~4:21 -- ironically a rival of yours is also doing a series of these, all-be-it, he's using a "super minimum battles" rule (though he allows the use of TMs as well, otherwise it would pretty much be just Mew Two finishing under "super minimum battles" ruleset, and even then, he requires TMs if he doesn't want to spam dozens of resets). I'm assuming for your run some extra battles between "super minimum battles" and "minimum battles" will be allowed if it would speed up the run or eliminate TM usage above what you've set for your new rules. I would assume you won't go much above minimum battles otherwise, why this ruleset? But I could see pokemon where some of these skips would be faster in > minimum battles but less time then regular battles due to skipping the SLOW nugget bridge section. Definately curious to see how all these go.
For me, minimum is almost never the answer for a faster overall time so let me kind of lay it down how I think about it and how the numbers always look to me personally. Let's say you are in your mid 30s-40s during the mid game slogging through at minimum battles and everything is either close or takes multiple turns to take out and you do like 25+ battles in that same vain and then someone else just picks up like 5 extra battles, hits another damage rounding threshold or two, uses candies smarter, and all the sudden they are one shotting most of those 25+ late game battles, then all the time is slowly made up until the second hypothetical run easily surpasses it. I guess you know by now, but what the minimum is can be great to know but it's never going to win a fastest time award and that's really what keeps me going on.
I’d just route a little better and cut it out. Like I say in the video, this isn’t a perfect run and can improve, it’s more of a conceptual way to do things.
The video was great, it was really fun to see just how much of a difference all these changes made. Overlay and splits are solid too Not surprised you were ahead by Misty. As a wise man once said nugget bridge has the highest density of mandatory trainers in the game @@GymLeaderMatt1987
Yea and it’s a little change up. It felt different to route and it’s something I’ve thought about for a while but this was like the concept for it. I think only A tier and above pokes could manage it.

I’ve been tinkering with it for a while since I saw a lemonade in the PC during a randomizer and trading HM Pokémon over was something we used to do as kids. Interesting stuff!
Happy new year, looking forward to the 2024 solo runs
Should have some good ones!
I liked this new type of video. Maybe doing different styles of runs with different rulesets would be a good way to break up the monotony of gen 1 solo runs
It’s fun to try something new but there’s no replacement for some good ol’ fashioned optimization!
Can you do the same "super speed run" with Alolan Ninetales? XD
Probably but who knows if we'll see this type of run again. It isn't doing too hot in the ratings lmao.
It's pretty interesting. It might even have potential to get some moves on mons that normally get walled by Brock early on but shine after. Seeing that in action could be interesting
Yea, similar concept with the egg move runs but those didn't do too hot so I'm tossing out something else to see if it sticks lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Hope this one does alright cause it is a kinda interesting way to mix things up.
Alakazam really focused his mind and pictured Blastoise as a Parasect at the last moment.
Brutal.
this is probably my third time watching this video, this style of run is super intriguing to me. it has me thinking of truly how low some pokemon can go. ive tried a few runs myself but with only 1 transfer move and no transfer TMs and ive had a blast. also i dont know if this is faster but you only actually need 2 HM pokemon, Charizard can learn Cut, Strength, Dig, and Fly and Staryu/mie can learn Surf, Flash, and for gen 2 can learn Waterfall and Whirlpool. it might not be faster cause of navigating through all 4 of the HM moves on charizard could be slower than having strength, fly, and cut on different pokemon, but its just something to think about.
For sure. The timer is the whole point for me most of the time lol. I like the process of ranking and what not.
Happy new year brother!
Same to you!
Nice video looking forward to the 2024 content
Over 8000! Really cool run!
Basically 9,000!
18:32 *TOMBSTONER, BROTHER!!!!*
Appreciate it!
Hell yeah, crack open a cold one with spoon man
Sounds like a fun time!
Is that Castlevania I hear in the beginning? The last time I noticed out of place music in the intro it was resident evil. You have a nice taste in games outside of Pokemon haha
SotN! Thanks, lol. I like good games, what can I say haha.
Alakazam with psychic and the elemental punches in Gen 1 is kind of crazy as those moves were pretty powerful for Gen 1
Alakazam is definitely pretty good, but not the main focal point of the video.
The video broke! I can hear things in the vid but not see
Fixed! Also happy new year (unless time zones)
100% of the time it’s user error. Refresh.
Ruleset with my boi nido-king would be fun
Yea, lots of good choices!
I'd like to see more pokemon try it out.😊
And by the way the spilt data looks nice, I really liked the color scheme.
TM28: Sausage throw
20:32 your inner Scott is leaking
Steiner?
NEW YEAR BROTHHERRRRR
Same to you!
Can't wait to see what you come up with next, and yes please more of these!
finally first like
Nice. You too!
keep up the great job man thank you
@@GymLeaderMatt1987
First liker or commenter because I think mine was first but I didn't think to like until there was 7
happy new year from the future (I'm in a different time zone)
Noice. Happy new year to you too!
Do more of these runs
We'll see!
Well yea, the randomizer changing your starter is the lynch pin of solo running. Can’t do much other than the standard any% speedrun without it.
While watching this, I had an idea - what if you did cross-gen style runs for Gen 1 Pokémon? Would much change?
I'm not sure. It looks like about 30 minutes or so and it might be a flat rate but who knows since it's a new concept.
My prediction is everyone this next year has fun 🎉
On the grind!
Tombstoner brother!!
Appreciate it!
@GymLeaderMatt1987 I love this idea, I use to trade the hm pokemon from my other games to get cut and skip a bunch when I was a kid. Very nostalgic.
Wouldn't it be better if the exp bar were on the left and the timer on the right?
Check recent streams.
Blastoise could be a speedy boi.
I'm sure a ton of Pokemon would be greatly increased but I'd rather do the vanilla run first. Squirtle is next for a vanilla.
Maybe caring a Pokémon lvl 60 in inventory might cut encounters in the mansion with the repels.
I’d just route a little better and cut it out. Like I say in the video, this isn’t a perfect run and can improve, it’s more of a conceptual way to do things.
Ooh, is this going to be a super minimal battles run?
Something like that. Inspired from a randomizer run with a lemonade in the PC lol.
The video was great, it was really fun to see just how much of a difference all these changes made. Overlay and splits are solid too
Not surprised you were ahead by Misty. As a wise man once said nugget bridge has the highest density of mandatory trainers in the game
@@GymLeaderMatt1987
Yea and it’s a little change up. It felt different to route and it’s something I’ve thought about for a while but this was like the concept for it. I think only A tier and above pokes could manage it.
Level 57 1 hour 48 minutes
I got to see alolan ninetales defeated before I am willing to give alakazam its credit
TOMBSTONER BROTHER
Close but I don't blame you being too far off. I tried to give away the 1h 30m mark in the thumbnail haha.
Am I alive?
I guess it depends on your perspective lol.
