I can’t believe to this day, that brad made the entire score that sounded like an live orchestra on just THAT thing. But Hans Zimmer get credited the best composer? He’s one of the best. But I think brad should be #2 next to John Williams! The Terminator sound revolutionized the syfy sound in scoring!
Ah so he DID use a late Series Fairlight CMI. WOW, i always wondered what he used and i thought he'd have done the Atari ST MIDI route like a lot of folks back then. At least those who could not afford selling a house, both kidneys an arm and a leg for just one CMI. This instrument really deserves all the proper attention and love to get restored to its original glory. Because this beast made history :)
Not going to lie, but I actually find that keyboard's appearance to be my most favorite thing about the whole system. I understand why this synth is SO important as it has led to software such as FL studio. But DAMN, just look at the the keyboard, it should belong in a industrial art museum just by itself.
Which keyboard are you referring to? The physical musical keyboard, the Fairlight computer keyboard with touchpad and pen, or the Apple USB keyboard and mouse?
@@darwiniandude the musical keyboard. That keyboard with a touch pad looks nice as well, just noticed it. I just love that industrial look of the fairlight musical keyboard.
Speaking of restoring Fair lights, I have EVERYTHING. PAL's, GAL's, Software Discs, full set of circuit diagrams, and the almost impossible to get Channel Cards. Peter Vogel sent them to me years ago, as I was hoping to start making boards to replace ones beyond repair.
That’s amazing. I’ve only heard of the Fairlights through the most recent Puscifer album. T2 is an all time favorite, I was unaware what instrument made up the soundtrack!!
Puscifer is in my top10 records last year. Great production. But keep in mind they use Series IIx and Series III. Very likely what you think is Fairlight is actually a Series IIx as it has own outstanding character. Series III is very different, it sounds warm but way more natural than Series II/IIx. T2 score is only Series III.
I had a series III rev 9 back in the early 90s, I remember when T2 came out I went back to the studio and loaded up all the preset sounds I recognised in the score. Good times! Not so good was that pen and tablet on the original keyboard... the damn thing was always dodgy, making the cursor skip all over the screen. I wish we could have used a mouse with it back in the day! On the plus side though, our machine had a very fancy upgrade - an optical drive with two whole GB of storage, which at the time felt like a ludicrous amount of storage for a sampler. It definitely was not fast at loading in a full bank of sounds, but it still impressed people when you told them how much you could store on it compared to floppy discs :)
Hi There this is Mr C. T. Boxill-Harris, I was wondering if they need to do the exact same version of Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime, why don’t they just Replace the Synthesiser String Sound to an Musette Accordion sound, and also Replace the Xylophone Sound to an 4 Times More Deeper Chime Bell or Even a 5 Times More Deeper Still Drum Sound, Because it is Still my Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Favourite Song Ever Since I was about 11 Years of Age Thank You 😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😅👍😉👍😉👏😅👍😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏😅👍😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏👏😅👍😉👍😉👏😅👍😉👍😉👏👏😉👍😉👏😅👍😉👍😉👏👏
Superbe work! Thank you for preserving such pieces. I clearly imagine Brad Fiedel wants to protect his work and the original sound files are subject to his authorization, it's normal. In the field of the history of music these original sound files are as much of importance as the machine itself, in my opinion (Mozart's own piano forte is important but his original paper scores too. Same principle). As you have copies of the files on the former HD I suppose you have some contact with Mr. Fiedel in order to the new owner of this historical machine to contact him and deal to get thoses files?
great piece of history ... but let's face it: systems like this lost it so soon to newer ones that did more (often WAY MORE!) in a much smaller and less a lot less costly package ... no wonder these guys died in less than a decade or so ... yes, i'm sure there are sill people, studios even, using a system like this because they paid a lot for it back in the day ... but those starting anew and with a limited budget, wouldn't go for this even if they wanted to ... still however, why not, if you're a collector of vintage wonders (like me) and can afford to pay big money for it, then let's go for it ... i'd really love to have this in my collection of the odds and the curious ... :-)
btw, was it in the video and i missed it or did the gentleman not mention it: what is the sound bit depth in this instrument, considering it is only 8-voices polyphony: 8-bits? 16-bits? (higher?)
@@v12alpine It’s 16-bit stereo and 16 note polyphony. Being a Rev 9, the max sample rate is 48khz. Earlier software versions would allow 100khz mono. Quite simply one of the best sounding hardware samplers ever made.
@@DeftAudio I hope it's in good hands, nothing would give me more pleasure than producing on a series three with that config. Though no way could I justify 18k :)

He used two Fairlight CMI in sync for T2 score. so, worth selling both kidneys :)
@@DeftAudio hahaha right? :P The Series III really was perfect.
the fairlight cmi emulator now out is also great on the pc/laptop
The Galleria score is one of the best pieces of music in a movie. The score in that scene was amazing.
Whoever ends up owning this will be owning a piece of movie history. Great restoration work @DeftAudio
I love that CMI provided the nice wooden side table for the keyboard tablet combination
Beautifully restored! I used to own a Series IIX and a Series III and regret selling them. Such incredible instruments and pieces of musical history.
It figures I'd only hear about this AFTER the sale. I would have definitely grabbed it. Huge Fiedel fan, and a major influence on my composing.
Imagine if you have a second chance :) Brad Fiedel used two Fairlight CMI in this production and the second system will be ready in May.

Peter Wielk and I have repro channel cards for Series II/IIx available. That doesn't limit you to do your run too :)
All users of 3 FARLIGHT CMI3s living in Tokyo. I would like to mention the manufacturer of the converter used to display on the LED monitor.

Spot-on, the data is restored and preserved, now the owner of the data (Brad Fiedel) can decide what to do with it :)
Is this the one that Jem Godfrey from the awesome UK progressive band called Frost* bought?
