Saudade. This little old daughter of Albuquerque, New Mexico will cry today, but I will samba tomorrow. Sergio Mendes's music is part of the foundation of my joy. What an amazing ambassador for Brazil has been.
I was raised on bossa nova and jazz. Explored a lot of musical genres since. Still love this one very much indeed. Lani Hall and Karen Phillpp's vocals are amazing.
The first time I heard it was in the movie "Joe versus the Volcano". I've considered it to be an important contribution to the whole of mankind for at least 3 decades now.
How could Lani Hall (American singer from Chicago) manage to master in a so brilliant mannerr Brazilian-Portuguese pronunciation and pace, with practically no trace of english accent? Simply unbelievable to me. I’m astonished. Lani Superlative singer!
She sings pretty well, but the accent, while subtle, is actually present. We can see it, for an example, when she pronounces the letter "e" in "quero" as a closed stretched vowel - when actually, in brazillian portuguese, the "e" in "quero" is pronounced as an open strecth vowel - such as in "bed" or "red. Same thing when she pronounces the word "velho".
I lived in Brasil in '67-'68, at age 18 to 19. Became fluent in Poruguese and fell in love with the music. Still listen to a lot. It also helped me get the Brasilian accent down. . Definitely the best South American music by miles.
This song will always remind me of my childhood. I was born in 1965 and my parents played This Album constantly. It's an absolutely beautiful album and this song stands out. The bossa nova beat and the vocals are just absolutely perfect.
Sorry to hear of the passing of Sergio Mendes. Thank you for introducing all us rather polite western audiences to the irresistible rhythms of bossa nova and samba. Rest in peace, sir

For those who don't know, this song talks about one of the several African gods that are very popular in Brazil, but in this case the song talks about Obá, a warrior goddess and the old blacks, deities of African religion who are not gods, but spirits of slaves who evolved spiritually due to the suffering of slavery and became deities, while Obá is an orixá, the orixás in African religion are equivalent to angels in Christianity. ❤❤
