George... we have vehicle camped and fished off the coast of NC and FL., what fun. Like you, we tried the truck bed tent and found it to be more of a bother than ait was worth. Though we looked at the easy lift truck bed system, it allowed keeping all items in place while travelling and only required lifting the cap cover once parked.... we just settled for a truck bed camper as it turned out to be the most comfortable option.
Agreed and I’ll probably end up in the same situation. However, right now my GMC Sierra is a 1500. Yes it has the tow package max but if I want a truck camper, I’m gonna need a 2500 or 3500.

I see so many uses in my garage or RV. Must get one. I think you found a very clever solution to your camping cravings. This is doable and easy. Plus the tent makes it look like an authentic fisherman/ hunter type of person camping not an elitist in their pricey RV with wine glasses, ha ha! You fit right in. It does invite inspection by any official. What works for the beach does not work for urban settings however, exactly the opposite in urbania. Thanks for a lovely segment! Have a great Sunday. Mine just got happier seeing your latest inventiveness! Since you are on this truck track, why not invent a collapsible 8020 frame with tent material in it, much like the cabinets you build. It pops up from folded position and makes a truck bed camper but with vinyl or canvas in it. Or just buy a truck camper and modify it. No more tent pitching. I'm thinking of windy days when that tent would be toast. I tried to camp on Jalama Beach once with my family in a tent and wind picked up to 50 mph. So we all slept in the VW Eurovan including the GSD dog.
Okay, George, you got me!…as you probably got everybody else too! Lol! Good start! I have the EcoFlow Delta Pro 3600 watt I bought a couple of years ago after the whole state of Texas froze over for a week. I wasn’t gonna go through that again with no power. Congrats on ‘your’ new EcoFlow! You mentioned air conditioners…idk if you’re aware but EcoFlow makes one of those as well! I’m surprised with all that lighting inside your truck tent, in such close proximity, that it didn’t give you a sunburn to go along with your beach dreaming! 😂. But, then again that’s another reason your videos are so good. Keep it up! Stay safe and have a blessed Sunday! ~Jim~
I always thought you were around Manalapan in the middle of the state. 5 miles from Island Beach State Park is a long way from Manalapan! Beautiful park. Enjoy your summer.
"I might even like fishing. " You are hysterical!!! Nobody said you had to bait the hook!!! Ok... don't know where you are but... one of my cherished memories is going to Pt. Pleasant, stopping for take out at one of my Grandpa's favorite places and parking with him at the channel to watch the boats come and go. I wouldn't want to sit on the beach in February, but there are probably other ways to get your fix.
From time to time, I go sit at the Pt Pleasant Inlet and watch the boats. I'd reminisce how I used to navigate that inlet myself in our boats. I shall get another boat! You'll see! You'll ALL see!
That’s such a great idea George! IMHO nothings better than being close to the ocean. I remember your early travel and cooking videos. In fact I have you to thank or blame for us picking up and moving across the country to TN, a land locked state, which I never imagined doing. I love TN but miss the ocean. My workaround for that is to go camping at the beach in Alabama or Georgia. Now I’m jonesin for a big beautiful Humble Road van to do that in. Someday,,,,, You’ve worked hard for it and should enjoy the spoils of your labor whenever you can. I can’t wait to see what your time at the ocean inspires you to create.
I found a used Kodiak canvas truck bed camper tent on Facebook marketplace. I just assembled it for the first time last night. It’s a little tricky, but it’s a far better tent. You should check it out. It looks like a covered wagon. It looks like a prairie schooner.
I have the Ecoflow Delta 2 and it is an awesome device, but you won’t run an air conditioner more than a few minutes, the reserve capacity is just too low. George, I came across some shade tolerant 100 watt solar panels called Shade Stopper by EMFX, $98 each, and they have ETFE coating. I bought two of them and they have become my favorites, very compact with magnetic closures.
Bravo and good for you! I may do the same thing. I have a little 17' fiberglass camper but getting it from storage, hooking up the weight distribution hitch, packing it, towing it to the lake, setting it up, then tearing it down, towing it back to storage, and going home pretty well negates the spontaneity and pleasure of a 1 or 2 day trip (I'm still on ADT too and don't have that much energy). I have a truck with a 6' bed and roll-up tonneau and investigated these tents a while back, but never really thought about the simplicity of using one for a spontaneous 1 or 2 day fishing trip. There are lots of COE campgrounds around me with campsites complete with electricity and water that are only $10 with the geezer pass. I've even have a pop up screen tent (like the 6 sided Clam or Gazelle) that can provide a big staked-down bug-free living room in about 5 minutes. What was so difficult about the setup of the truck tent you bought?
That Napier tent was a real struggle to put up and take down very difficult. The skin was too tight. You had to pull too much pressure on the polls to get them in the pockets. Very difficult. So now I return that one and I have the Kodiak canvas truck tent it’s heavy as hell much better 10 will see how easy that one is to set up. Do you know it’s gonna happen? I’ll end up with a cap someday I just don’t want to spend $4000 Now.
@@HumbleRoad Height is a problem with most caps at least for my old knees and back. I guess you could at least leave it setup for camping most of the time.
The closer I get to retirement, the more I am leaning toward getting a truck camper setup, rather than a B van. The cost is certainly lower and the terrain capability of a 4x4 truck is far higher than that of a van, which is important to me. Of course, there are many advantages to a van as well, so you have to weigh the pros and cons for you own use case. I'm still 8 years away form retirement, so I'm sure I'll change my mind a dozen more times lol. Also, love the technical info at the end of the video.
Seems to me you could engineer a simple 80/20 box structure that no taller than bed sides, which can extend up to standing height. You could make it hard sided or soft. Make it able to slid or lifted into the bed with a ceiling hoist. Hell you could get some cheap linear actuators and motorize the extension process. Sell the precut pieces, hardware and bolts, have it all drop shipped from vendors online.
Ha, starts with a tent, give it six months and it'll be an ultra-light weight drop in pop-top camper module that lives on a wall. When it's beach night just reverse up, tilt the module into the tray and lock it in. Anything is possible with a shop like yours!
I'm just surprised you don't have your own van build. If you need a reason you can do r&d on your own van switch stuff out and test it. See now you can justify it. 😂
Hey George, I saw something you might be interested. I watched a van built video. The kitchen counter look flat and normal but according the builder, it has two induction cooking burners. It could be perfect for most people with a good power bank. No propane, no induction cooking appliance and a lot of counter space. If I find the video, I will send you the link. I admire your love and loyalty but, I doubt NJ beaches are top 100 in the US.
George, you are right about the Jersey beachs having spent the 60's and 70's growing up on LBI. I moved to Vt. in 1976. You are wrong to think YOU can do simple. I could't stop laughing when you shifted gears from simple to complex in just a few minutes. I've watched you from the beginning just keep being yourself.
During the whole video I was hoping you were going to say you bought a small truck camper. 😆 George, you are to bougie for the tent. You need solid walls and some running water and a kitchen. Can’t wait for these videos.
I respectfully ask, why not a van? It hauls lumber, can have a fold down cot, fold down counter and with a magnetic sign be a company vehicle. A friend just got the same Amazon tent. It is a chore to erect.
Can someone please explain the whole concept of truck bed tents? Looks like the same kinda tent you would put on the ground but now you cant use your truck because youre camping in the back of it. So if you need to use the truck for anything at all, you gotta pack up your whole camping set up, drive out to do whatever you need to do and come back and rebuild the tent all over again. Or is my thinking way off and simplistic? Im sorry im not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
You are correct Mike it’s not a perfect situation. However the way I’m going to use this tent. I will be parking on the beach and staying there until I leave.
