Once you have done this can you begin functioning as a nonprofit-before you file for tax exempt status. For examples applying for grants to start providing service? Also thank you for taking the time to create these videos, they are so helpful

Hi, this video is soooo good. I have a question though. With the documents sent to the IRS along with the 1023 Form do we also need to send our minutes? (Inc. minutes as well as board minutes)

Question what is it like starting and envisioning an organization and then give up complete control to someone else?

I suppose the same way an artist feels when he gives away a masterpiece.... let the world enjoy your genius and create another for them to enjoy

Has information on the checklist that you linked in the description become outdated/been replaced by other steps? I know its been 3 years but I dont know if theres a different checklist every year or if the information lasts.

The main steps remain the same, the only difference is that IRS now encourages 1023 online filing www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-revises-form-1023-for-applying-for-tax-exempt-status
Also, there can be changes on a state level. I would double-check with the secretary of your state.

how long does the 1023 take to fill out? is it something an individual can navigate on my own or would i need to find help from an attorney?

IRS Form 1023 is 29 pages long, plus required schedules and attachments. While every organization does not have to complete every page, a typical application package is between 50-100 pages of material. The IRS estimates a preparation time of well over 100 hours for a novice to prepare Form 1023. This organization specializes in getting nonprofits up and running and can help you www.501c3.org/.

The same person can hold multiple offices, but not multiple seats.

Aplos offices ??? I heard different , I thought one could hold multiply chairs and possibly one person run the board as well

You correct that some states may require only one person to run a board, but in most states at least three is required. The biggest hurdle is that the IRS almost always requires at least three distinct people (that aren't related) to be on the board to be tax-exempt in order to indicate that the nonprofit is actually in the public interest. Its possible they would reject an application with a board of one or two with this type of response: www.irs.gov/pub/irs-wd/0736037.pdf
