    So I finally made my circle skirt and I LOVE it so much, thank you! My first time making a skirt and it came out so well because of your tutorial ❤
    So the one thing I haven't done yet is hem the bottom because thats where I'm terrified of messing up and also in general I just love the way the skirt falls/looks right now.
    So this is probably a dumb question but is heming the bottom always necessary, I get its to prevent fraying but will it really be ruined if I don't do it? I was looking at some of my store bought skirts and noticed 2 of them dont have hems at the bottom either. So I guess I was wondering how big of a deal it is to not hem it?

    • @AnnikaVictoria24
      @AnnikaVictoria24  3 роки тому +21

      Not a big deal! It's honestly up to you! If the fabric is stretchy then it won't fray so there's no functional need for a hem, only aesthetic. If the fabric is not stretchy (and non-stretch fabric is called "woven") then a hem is useful because it prevents the fabric from fraying.
      Anyway I'm so glad it worked out well! Super excited for you!! 🤩😊

    one tip though, I have made mutiple circle skirts and I have many times messed up the inner and outer circle measures when drawing, so note, when you draw the outer circle from the corner, the radius should be WAIST RADIUS+LENGTH not just length because you'll end up with a much shorter skirt. I guess you didn't have any problems with that, but it's not very clearly explained on the video. I'm saying it because I have more than once ended up with a skirt that barely covered my butt due to this confusion. Otherwise great tutorial =)

      I figured this was mostly made up for by the addition of the thick waistband. But thank you for the tip! :)

      Annika Victoria I'm not clear on one thing, do I still divide my waist lenght by 6.28 if I'm using cms? Great tutorial btw, way more clear than other ones.

    • @zegobou
      @zegobou 5 років тому +16

      @@TubaTheRipper Yes, keep 6.28 because this is the ratio between the radius and perimeter of a circle regardless of which measuring system you use :)

    I'm four years late but this might still help some people: instead of using the tape measure to mark every single point on the paper, measure the length you want your skirt to be+ the radius of your waist and mark it on the paper. Next, tie a piece of string to your pen or pencil and hold the end taught on the corner of the paper. Put your pen or pencil on the mark you just made and draw the quarter circle, always keeping the pen or pencil as far away from the corner of paper as possible. hope this helps. If not, then search 'how to use string as a compass' on youtube.

      If you have a flexible tape measure like that you can also put a pin in one end to secure it rather than hunting for spare string

    hey Annika, I'm a big fan of your videos but have figured time and time again that a comment from me wouldn't be more than a drop in the bucket. but why not? I've been playing soccer for years and recently I found myself in a theatre opportunity where I had to wear thigh highs. I searched for what seemed like months to find a pair that fit over my big muscly legs. This really makes me sad for plus-sized girls and it made me realize how many other clothing opportunities they're missing out on. things like crop tops, suspender shorts, overalls. It would be super awesome if you could make things like thigh highs with fabrics stretchy enough to fit bigger but still cozy. I suck at all things fashion but after my thigh high expedition I realized this is a really sore pain in my butt. Just an idea I had.

    I was re-watching this lovely video of yours and at 3:57 (when your skirt was spread out straight at the waistband) a thought suddenly struck me: this would make amazingly gorgeous curtains! I've never seen curtains cut from a circle like this. Might not work well for very tall windows, but I'm going to remember this next time I need curtains for a smallish window, especially in a bathroom or kitchen or feminine space. The "waistband" would just become the rod pocket. I can imagine if the fabric were sheer, there might be a beautiful ombre effect as the denser fabric at the hem faded to the less full fabric at the top.

    Making a skirt like this for my daughter now. Had a thought: since you know how to make your own underwear, you could make some that match this skirt, and then if/when it blows up a bit far you won't be embarrassed. It'll be a complete outfit and appear no more personally revealing than a leotard or cheerleader's uniform.
    I don't know exactly why that is... the amount of leg showing is the same... but somehow showing ordinary underwear under a skirt feels like a serious "oops" moment and draws the eye, but if it matches I don't even see it. They used to do this a lot on Star Trek, when Uhura's very short miniskirt and underwear matched and it took me until very recently even to think to look at it. It just seemed like the way things SHOULD be!

    I made my own for a math project and I was wondering why you divide it by 6.28?

    • @AnnikaVictoria24
      @AnnikaVictoria24  10 років тому +27

      Coolest project ever! You divide it by 6.28 because this is pi x 2. (To get the radius of a circle, you need to divide the circumference - your waist measurement - by pi x 2!)

    Is it possible that this could work on a plus size chick like me?

    • @AnnikaVictoria24
      @AnnikaVictoria24  9 років тому +6

      Definitely! This will work for any size :)

    • @SRImpulse
      @SRImpulse 9 років тому +4

      Strong suggestion if you're going to be working on a plus size, measure the length of the skirt from the radius of the inner hole instead of from the corner of the paper.. My girlfriend is a bit larger and this tutorial takes in account for 3 inches of extra space for the smaller girl who is in the video.. to compensate for a larger girl you'd need either more length or compensate up to 6-8 inches on the waist line.

    I just made a skirt to wear to my husband's Air Force graduation next month! The width of my fabric wasn't long enough, so I had to make it a good bit shorter than I wanted. :/
    But it was the exact pattern I wanted(the Air Force fabric sold at Hobby Lobby), so it will do! I'll just have to get some shorts to wear under it!(: Anyway, I've only sewn two things in my life before this and that was back in 2009/2010! My skirt is no where near perfect, but it looks pretty good! I didn't make the waistband, it seemed too advanced for me. I folded the top and added elastic to mine. So thankful I found this video! You made it very easy! I'll have to make some more skirts in the future using this!

    Awesome tutorial. Considering using this method to alter a pattern that takes a circle skirt and of course doesn't come in my size.
    For those asking about how to make the hem not wrinkle/look awful: look up tutorials on how to hem a curved edge, because there is a specific technique you need to use to prevent the wrinkle-as-you-sew and give circle skirts a nice clean edge on the hem.

    Hi Annika your tutorial was great; however it was good seeing how others sew waistands & its good that ur a beginner sewer & I hope u will continue doing what u do. One ting I'll shared with u other way of sewing waistands but using one continuos piece of fabric & apply pellon/interfacing to its wrongsides; placed the waistband to skirt rightsides pin and sew all round inner circumference press seam at back up & fold waistband to hide stitching at back and handstitch in place or topstitch at back part. I hope this was helpfull to you & thanks for sharing this tutorial with us. Btw I am a new commenter to your page have a blessed weekend.
