Stretchy fabrics include lycra, jersey knits and spandex if you're on the lookout for some in a fabric store. Buy about 1.5 metres if you want enough fabric to work with (and if you want to make it about the same length as mine!)
Not enough fabric? Want a slightly less full skirt? Want to add a zipper or using non-stretchy material? Check out my "half circle skirt" tutorial! • DIY "Half Circle Skirt...

So I finally made my circle skirt and I LOVE it so much, thank you! My first time making a skirt and it came out so well because of your tutorial ❤
So the one thing I haven't done yet is hem the bottom because thats where I'm terrified of messing up and also in general I just love the way the skirt falls/looks right now.
So this is probably a dumb question but is heming the bottom always necessary, I get its to prevent fraying but will it really be ruined if I don't do it? I was looking at some of my store bought skirts and noticed 2 of them dont have hems at the bottom either. So I guess I was wondering how big of a deal it is to not hem it?
Not a big deal! It's honestly up to you! If the fabric is stretchy then it won't fray so there's no functional need for a hem, only aesthetic. If the fabric is not stretchy (and non-stretch fabric is called "woven") then a hem is useful because it prevents the fabric from fraying.
Anyway I'm so glad it worked out well! Super excited for you!! 🤩😊
after 5 attempts using other people's tutorials, I finally; FINALLY was able to make a circle skirt with your tutorial. So. Frickin. Happy.
Yaaay! I'm so glad that I was able to help :D
Annika Victoria sups pretty wish I could try...can you do this with hand stitching
It would take a long long time, but I know people have done it!
one tip though, I have made mutiple circle skirts and I have many times messed up the inner and outer circle measures when drawing, so note, when you draw the outer circle from the corner, the radius should be WAIST RADIUS+LENGTH not just length because you'll end up with a much shorter skirt. I guess you didn't have any problems with that, but it's not very clearly explained on the video. I'm saying it because I have more than once ended up with a skirt that barely covered my butt due to this confusion. Otherwise great tutorial =)
I figured this was mostly made up for by the addition of the thick waistband. But thank you for the tip! :)
Annika Victoria I'm not clear on one thing, do I still divide my waist lenght by 6.28 if I'm using cms? Great tutorial btw, way more clear than other ones.
@@TubaTheRipper Yes, keep 6.28 because this is the ratio between the radius and perimeter of a circle regardless of which measuring system you use :)
Makes to take sense lol
Yeah when i first did this, following this tutorial, it caused me to fuck up.
I'm four years late but this might still help some people: instead of using the tape measure to mark every single point on the paper, measure the length you want your skirt to be+ the radius of your waist and mark it on the paper. Next, tie a piece of string to your pen or pencil and hold the end taught on the corner of the paper. Put your pen or pencil on the mark you just made and draw the quarter circle, always keeping the pen or pencil as far away from the corner of paper as possible. hope this helps. If not, then search 'how to use string as a compass' on youtube.
That's the way my mom taught me. Very quick and easy.
That is genius. Thank you so much!
If you have a flexible tape measure like that you can also put a pin in one end to secure it rather than hunting for spare string
Excellent tip! Thank you!
THANK YOU!!
So close to one million views! :O
+Annika Victoria ayyy you did it!!
+LuckyLifeguard woooooo! :D
+Annika Victoria well done !!!!!!!!!! lov ur vids btw
You are he best. I love make grift buy
Love your vids but could you do ombré tee shirts I think it would be cool
I have just sat through 15 DIY Circle Skirt videos to make a DIY bachlorette party dress for my blog. Your video is the best, so easy to follow:) Def referring everyone here for the circle skirt design part of the tutorial:)
I was on my 4 this my 5 and yup best one yet!
Lucky this was my second one...and done!
As always super easy and simple to follow! I love it. Now if I could only get my cat not to lay on the fabric and chase my scissors while I'm cutting, I could actually get something done. :)
Kadie Rose I totally relate pets can be annoying sewing buddies my dog sits right on the fabric and tries to sniff the scissors when I cut it
just made my first circle skirt, my first ever project, it looks really weird because i didn't cut it out right and i did a really bad job with the hem because that was the first thing i did and the zipper looks even worse but i still really love it and i'm glad i tried... just don't know if i wanna wear it outside
I’ve used this tutorial to make at least 3 skirts now. EASIEST thing I’ve ever sewn. Love how simple you make it, cause believe me I’ll mess up on even the easiest of sewing projects lol.
WHERE HAS THIS TUTORIAL BEEN ALL MY LIFE
hey Annika, I'm a big fan of your videos but have figured time and time again that a comment from me wouldn't be more than a drop in the bucket. but why not? I've been playing soccer for years and recently I found myself in a theatre opportunity where I had to wear thigh highs. I searched for what seemed like months to find a pair that fit over my big muscly legs. This really makes me sad for plus-sized girls and it made me realize how many other clothing opportunities they're missing out on. things like crop tops, suspender shorts, overalls. It would be super awesome if you could make things like thigh highs with fabrics stretchy enough to fit bigger but still cozy. I suck at all things fashion but after my thigh high expedition I realized this is a really sore pain in my butt. Just an idea I had.
I hand-sewed a Barbie doll-sized skirt with this video and I was amazed. This video is the best tutorial I have seen, I'm going to make one for my sister now.
Thank you for making it SUPER SIMPLE AND SHORT. I can not stand when people talk so much and make their videos super long. I appreciate you.
I've just bought my first sewing machine after being inspired by your videos, and I've called her Annika!!
when you really wanna make a circle skirt but don't own any sewing equipment
So me
I don't own a sewing machine so everything I tailor is done by hand. ^^" Sadly this method takes such a long time.
Karlie Fish I have sewing equipment but I don't know how to sew that good
bonnet the bunny dude I used to have no knowledge on sewing so I just took out my sewing machine and was like fuck it I'm gonna sew something once you get some cheap fabric to practice with (I got an entire roll of fabric for $10 at savers so always go to thrift shops, bedsheets blankets table cloths and other unconventional cloth materials will also work) Annika's videos are so detailed and most are good for beginners
Caitlin Belle Isle same..even I wanted to learn to sew..so I took out my mom's old machine . fixed it..and now I'm learning :)
THANK YOU so much! I watched about 6 videos and nobody made sense to me but you! You gave very clear instructions and didn’t do a lot of extra unnecessary talking! Thank you! I am new to sewing and I was determined to get this full circle skirt. Thank you again! Consider me “liked” and “subscribed” 🥰
Thank you soooooo much for showing a simple version of making a circle skirt....you saved us from all that math that a lot of other videos have.
I've never sewed in my life, and I kinda want to make a skirt like this. I think I probably could, I'm good with my hands lol. Plus, my mom has a sewing machine.
oh shit waddup
I LOVE YOUR NAME HAM FAM
+Baby Punk I have a similar situation, I have a sewing machine I've never used! but I might try to learn now
SAMMEEEE
This is the cutest. I recently bought this amazing holographic gold fabric and I've been wondering what to do with it - I'm thinking I'll make one of these and with whatever fabric I have left make some kind of bralette. I'll tag you in on instagram!
x
+Wild Bear I agree with you girl.
I AM A HOLOSEXUAL LIKE SIMPLY NAILOGICAL
+CharlotteMarieDee me too!!! Ma fave is menchie the cat!!!
+CharlotteMarieDee yasssss I love men hie the cat too
*menchie
the first ever peice of clothing i made for myself (that turned out succesful, anyways) was following this tutorial.... now five years later i still reference it all the time when im not sure about little things bc i use this method as a base for pretty much all skirts/dresses..... sewing is such a passion of mine and honestly without the euphoria of trying on that first circle skirt and knowing it had worked idk if i'd really have it in my life. so thank you so much for this video 💞💞
This tutorial may be 6 years old but it’s still a timeless, tried and true one because of the classic skirt style and super-easy demonstration.
I made one of my own and I love it!I watched lots of other videos and this one by far had the best instructions,I can't wait to try more of her sewing tutorials!(:
You did this so perfect... I just got my sewing machine and this would be the first thing I try.....only because you made this look soooo much easier than the other ones I have seen....started from the measurements to the stitching... Thanks great tutorial btw
This was the first video of yours i watched- now several years later i have a sewing machine and this will be my first project
I got an old sewing machine for my birthday, because a relative decided i should start sewing... but I have zero experience. I didnt know what I should sew first, but I found your video and just tried it out. It looked easier than it was in the end, but I did manage to make a full circle skirt. Its not perfect but its my first project ever so Im really happy and your turtorial helped me a lot. I still need a long way to go though.
This was the first garment our grand daughter has made and it was a pleasant experience for her. She is using the new machine her grandfather and I gave her as a birthday/graduation gift.
That is so sweet, and I am so glad that I could help her enter the wonderful world of sewing! Also, good present-buying! I got my first sewing machine from my father and it was the best present I've ever received!
Perfect! I am more into no zipper skirts.
This tutorial will be the best choice for my future projects.
Thank you very much!
Just want to say a HUGE THANKYOU Annika! This was the most easy to follow, helpful video and in just a couple of hours last night I was able to make the most lovely skirt from this technique! I am a beginner sewer who has just gotten my first machine and I am loving using it but often frustrated by my failed projects. But this was my first success which I will always remember and be grateful to you and your video for it! You rock xx
everyone else’s tutorials are hard and not clear.. yours are clear, easy, and are not intimidating
I was re-watching this lovely video of yours and at 3:57 (when your skirt was spread out straight at the waistband) a thought suddenly struck me: this would make amazingly gorgeous curtains! I've never seen curtains cut from a circle like this. Might not work well for very tall windows, but I'm going to remember this next time I need curtains for a smallish window, especially in a bathroom or kitchen or feminine space. The "waistband" would just become the rod pocket. I can imagine if the fabric were sheer, there might be a beautiful ombre effect as the denser fabric at the hem faded to the less full fabric at the top.
You are full of great ideas Marialla :D
I have made two of these already. Once you get your pattern they get way easier. I'm thinking about making a longer one...
I'm making a longer circle skirt today, too! The hemming takes waaaay longer, but it's very pretty when you're done :)
It really depends on exactly how long you want to make it. You should be able to do the calculations to figure out exactly what dimensions of fabric you need before you start.
Thank you so much for all of the tutorials! I've been sewing using patterns for a while, and your videos have made me not afraid to try and draft my own patterns for things =D
Okay. so I love your channel first off. second. I made a circle skirt from a canvas material but like watching atleast 3 of your videos and using the different techniques from them. it's not half bad for my first time. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS!
Just a word of advice you may want to measure from the end of the inner circle or your skirt will be way to short like mine is.
You saved my life!
Yeah, you're actually supposed to get the outer circle length by adding the desired skirt length, the length of the inner circle, and 2 inches or so for hem and seam allowance, which she didn't do in the video :(
HotBeauty99 I wish I read the comments before I did it 😂
Just figured that out making my pattern, thought i missed a step
Courtney isn’t that obvious though?
i just finshed making this total amaze
I just made a circle skirt following this tutorial and I honestly feel so proud of my self right now. Thank you, Annika!
I bought myself a sewing machine last year with the idea of learning how to make my own skirts and dresses but I had no idea where to start! I can't wait to get started on my first skirt, thanks Annika!
annika... u smart.... u loyal
Piggy DS we appreciate you
yey! my fav youtuber reaches one million views! hopefully she gets 1m subs next!
THANKYOU FOR not bringing up Pi in your measurements!!! and showing what you are doing as you are explaining it!!! I have so much fabric but could not understand how ppl made their skirts!
Thank you for making this video, l've watched 6 others still had no clue. So confused. maybe now I can make one. Awesome job.
I just finished mine, and it turned out great! The only problem is, I think I might have twirled too much....>.
it’s really fun!
GREAT Video! I love the detail you put into explaining the process. I can't wait to find my stretchy fabric to make this with. thank you, keep up the good work.
I am making this at the moment while following your steps, you are really good at explaining what to do. You make it really easy to understand. I will definitely make more things from your videos! Thanks!
OMG
I like dis skirt verry mach
Thank you for the inspiration
Ps i'm sorry i com from Holland and i can't not so good englisch sorry 😀😀
the songs really pissed me off idk y 😂😂😂
+DanielleTheDevil Saame, I had to mute the video lol
LOL OH MY GOSH ME TOOOO
ARMMYY
The music is the worst! Great tutorial though!
Heyy same here
Thank you so much for making this! I am so new to sewing and I have been slacking on my hobby lately. Time to sew again! And stay consistent!!
This IS the best sewing tutorial I've seen on UA-cam. Bravo and thank you for sharing!
I have the same sewing machine! Ahhhh 😆😂 also are you from Australia?
Rosemary Wilson yeah, she is. At least she lives there
Aren't you supposed to measure the length of the skirt from the bottom of the top cut line?
Yes you are. And you need to add that smaller circle's inner radius when measuring your fabric. I can up 5 inches short the first time I tried!
i made this with a less-stretchy cotton & added a zipper and it was absolutely perfect!!
This was the best tutorial I've seen so far, very clear and easy to understand!
I'm f you don't mind me asking, where did you purchase your blouse? (In the beginning) I've been looking for something like that for weeks! :)
Lee Anne It's just from a thrift shop, I'm sorry!
Making a skirt like this for my daughter now. Had a thought: since you know how to make your own underwear, you could make some that match this skirt, and then if/when it blows up a bit far you won't be embarrassed. It'll be a complete outfit and appear no more personally revealing than a leotard or cheerleader's uniform.
I don't know exactly why that is... the amount of leg showing is the same... but somehow showing ordinary underwear under a skirt feels like a serious "oops" moment and draws the eye, but if it matches I don't even see it. They used to do this a lot on Star Trek, when Uhura's very short miniskirt and underwear matched and it took me until very recently even to think to look at it. It just seemed like the way things SHOULD be!
+Marialla OMG and even sew it to the skirt. You're always so full of good ideas!!!
*screenshotting all your suggestions for future use so I don't lose them* heheh (I think I need a folder just for your suggestions for things!)
+Annika Victoria I wouldn't have thought of sewing it to the skirt. That's really smart! That way it'll never get lost in the wash. Brilliant!
One of the best tutorial videos I have seen!
wow! i didn't know circle skirt tutorials could _actually_ be super easy to follow! im legit super happy with this video, definitely bookmarking this :)
I made my own for a math project and I was wondering why you divide it by 6.28?
Coolest project ever! You divide it by 6.28 because this is pi x 2. (To get the radius of a circle, you need to divide the circumference - your waist measurement - by pi x 2!)
Annika Victoria Thank you so much!
when marinette watched this
I ve been trying to understand every tutorial I watched at youtube about circle skirt and wow! Your tutorial is easy to understand! Now I can start doing my own circle skirt thanks to you! ;3
I was looking for an easy to understand tutorial and this helped a ton. I don't know what I would have done without this tutorial and the skirt turned out super cute!! Thanks sm!!
Is there any website where i can buy nice fabric but not that expensive ?
fabric.com ! :)
Thanks annika :)
Salty Parabolas ;D
;)
Just finished making it, and I love it! Tutorial is awesome all the way through!
Yay! I'm so glad that I could help you :)
This was actually really easy to understand unlike most sewing videos! I'm so excited to try this!
The music is so annoying
Is it possible that this could work on a plus size chick like me?
Definitely! This will work for any size :)
Strong suggestion if you're going to be working on a plus size, measure the length of the skirt from the radius of the inner hole instead of from the corner of the paper.. My girlfriend is a bit larger and this tutorial takes in account for 3 inches of extra space for the smaller girl who is in the video.. to compensate for a larger girl you'd need either more length or compensate up to 6-8 inches on the waist line.
I watched this forever ago, and just recently discovered your channel! Didn't realize I'd seen your videos before until now
Best circle skirt tutorial amongst many others! Thank you for the simple and str8 fwd video!
This could be me
but I hate math. :-/
+Amanda Gonzalez calculators are amazing things you know ~(O wO)~
*sneaks off*
Girl love this tutorial. So simple and easy to follow! Also AWSOME choice of music CHIPTUNES is my jam!
I just made a skirt to wear to my husband's Air Force graduation next month! The width of my fabric wasn't long enough, so I had to make it a good bit shorter than I wanted. :/
But it was the exact pattern I wanted(the Air Force fabric sold at Hobby Lobby), so it will do! I'll just have to get some shorts to wear under it!(: Anyway, I've only sewn two things in my life before this and that was back in 2009/2010! My skirt is no where near perfect, but it looks pretty good! I didn't make the waistband, it seemed too advanced for me. I folded the top and added elastic to mine. So thankful I found this video! You made it very easy! I'll have to make some more skirts in the future using this!
The wrapping paper is such a simple, yet genius way to make quick and easy pattern pieces!
Thank you so much for including the right way to take measurements. I'm going to try this as soon as I get some new fabric. Thanks.
This is beautiful! I love finding other DIY youtubers 🤗🤗🤗
Thank you for this. I had a hard time trying to understand written tutorials . I finally get it.
sooo love this tutorial! I've just made one and it is such a beauty! Thanks a lot!! :)
This is amazing. I love your video it is so simple. Other videos that I have watched are sort of confusing, but I understand this completely.
OH MY GOSH! U saved my life I've always wanted a circle skirt and to think i was about to buy one thx!
This video was so helpful!!! I LOVE fashion and I want to be a fashion designer when I am older. I used this video to make my very own circle skirt! Thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much!
This is such a great video! Picture day is coming up for me... So I'm gonna try to make this and I have my whole outfit picked out! I looked at other vids and they were WAY to hard and have zippers but u made it easy thank u so much! I'm trying this out! :)
Wow just in time I had a skirt half done but didn't want to do the waistband, this helped alot thanks girl!
thank you so much for this video! my skirt is almost finished and it really looks great ^^ I was scared to mess up things, but your tutorial is so easy to understand so I went back to this video everytime I needed help ^^ My shiro cosplay is now almost finished!
i love it you made it so easy i found your,s was one of the easiest to understand of the circle skirt tutorials Dee,
I've been looking for an easy skirt tutorial and I found it, thank you so much:)
Awesome tutorial. Considering using this method to alter a pattern that takes a circle skirt and of course doesn't come in my size.
For those asking about how to make the hem not wrinkle/look awful: look up tutorials on how to hem a curved edge, because there is a specific technique you need to use to prevent the wrinkle-as-you-sew and give circle skirts a nice clean edge on the hem.
I really like your video ! Thanks so much for the tuto. I'm gonna try this weekend for sure.
Hi Annika your tutorial was great; however it was good seeing how others sew waistands & its good that ur a beginner sewer & I hope u will continue doing what u do. One ting I'll shared with u other way of sewing waistands but using one continuos piece of fabric & apply pellon/interfacing to its wrongsides; placed the waistband to skirt rightsides pin and sew all round inner circumference press seam at back up & fold waistband to hide stitching at back and handstitch in place or topstitch at back part. I hope this was helpfull to you & thanks for sharing this tutorial with us. Btw I am a new commenter to your page have a blessed weekend.
this is so easy and so so helpful, and also points for the music, i love it :)))
Great tutorial! I am going to get my supplies today and I'm going to make my circle skirt!
Very cool! Am definitely going to try your method, you make it look so easy!
loveeee that cute fabric you used and thanks for this easy and not so complicated tutorial :)
So I followed this tutorial to make a circle skirt (my first sewing project using a machine) and besides the fact that the skirt is hideous due to my own mistakes, it turned out good and it fits so I'm happy haha. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you so much for making this! Very straight forward and easy to follow instructions.
thank you so much for making this tutorial! now i don't need to run out to fabricville AGAIN to complete my costume!!
I LOVE this video! So clear and easy to do!
I love it, I simply love it ! Can't wait to try this on my own !
This is a great tutorial! Very straight forward and easy to follow! I will definitely make myself a skirt :)
this is the best tutorial!!! so easy to follow and really cute!!
I just made one today and I love it to death! Thank you so much for this tutorial
OMG the first video of yours I ever watched!!
