The Kerong-kerong fish is a medium-sized hunting fish with an oval body that is slightly compressed laterally. The mouth is obliquely slanted with jaws of equal length and the upper jaw reaches the level of the front edge of the eye. There are 11 or 12 spines on the dorsal fin and 9 to 11 rays, the spiny part is very curved.
