I was fortunate to meet Noel in the 80's (he gave me a cassette tape of his music). Not only was he incredibly talented but he was also very sweet and humble guy. He did pass at a young age which is sad for his family.
It was like I was mixing this song for an angel from heaven when I sat behind the recording console in the studio on Broadway in New York City, mixing this album entitled: "Feel It" for Noel Pointer and +his coproducer, arranger +Paul Riser. Noel was an #angel. #Thank you +Bower Wilkins for sharing this wonderful memory brought to me in this song...
+CommishNflpro: This was my inaugural project after moving to New York City in 1978. What a way to start what would be three wonderful years of living in NYC, working wth +Noel Pointer. 3 albums with +Melba Moore, my initial work with Phyllis Hyman, having Luther vendors , Tawatha Agee, and Fonzi Thorto sing with me on Melba Moore's "Closer" album, Working and writing with Pete Billotti. This was a great career experience for me. Noel's Feel It album is one of the most fulfilling projects that I have ever worked on. Thank you for commenting...
+Onaje Allan Gumbs, +jazman49, I just noticed your comment and I want you to know this is my favorite. I love all of the songs but late at night, and when I am stressed, I come hear just to hear this song. Contact me anytime. You are a great writer. #Cheers! #BH
Music is arguably the closest thing to being in heaven on earth. Noel Pointer succeeds in both heaven & earth dwellings. The city of Niteroi in southern Brazil; just north of Rio De Janeiro on the Atlantic Ocean is honored here in typical Noel Pointer NYC fashion. LJR
Wow! It's a pleasure to get to know the composer of Niteroi; albeit if only through Facebook. I've loved your song from the first time I heard it, & have played my flute & melodica to it. Kudos & Thank You!
+jazman49; and furthermore... After just pulling your name in Google (wikipedia), it occurred to me that I've heard of you! Your name came up several times when I studied music at Harlem's Jazzmobile. Trumpeter Jimmy Owens & director Dr. Billy Taylor mentioned you several times. Wikipedia states that you were born in Harlem & grew up in St.Albans, Queens. When I lived in Queens Village in the '80's, I played quite a bit at "The Village Door" in Jamaica, Queens. There I played with Tom Brown (Jamaica Funk), Ray Nelson (Max Roach), & Khaliq Abdul Drew (soprano swaxophonist). Those were great times! Peace, Brother!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. The song takes you to another place and time, where happiness abounds. If you where walking in Heaven this is what you would believe would be playing.A timeless piece, fantastic Violin playing. Duane Jones
I will never forget you Noel Pointer. It is because of you, I began to see and hear the violin as more than just an instrument for European classical music only. Peace N Blessings to your soul.
The funds from his record sells and royalties should go to his family. Why does this wicked music industry make it so hard to get what we love. Black people stick together unite and get our own industry.
I remember this tune back when it was playing on the air in New York City (WRVR). Many decades have passed between then and now, but it still sounds great. Thanks so much for posting!
This brother was amazing!!!! One of my best friends in the world turned me on to this guy. I was overseas when he died, broke my heart.... Rest easy Noel..... PEACE
Heavenly man! It's such a beautiful thing, what music like this can do with your thoughts; just using the words from the song; Everything Must Change It says Music makes me cry, this is a power composition.
Living in Cinti. when I 1st heard both Niteroi and Virgie. The mixture on each was unlike any music I had ever heard, but summer and happiness were seemingly the dominant themes. Awesome jazz then...Awesome jazz now! Thanks Noel!!!
Wow. Clearly one of my all time favorites and I restored a turntable to play this a few years ago because I could not find a CD or digital copy. Had no idea that Onaje Allan Gumbs wrote this. My classmate, George Grey, from Baltimore played drums with Mr. Gumbs. Noel left us too soon. He use to appear in Georgetown at the Cellar Door back in the day.
The reason why it has been hard to find Noel's music in recent years is because the master distribution rights for his recored label(s) been transferred, and pass around so many times. It has finally landed with +UMG.
this guy passed way too soon ! i love the violin on this piece! R.I.P. Noel!

+Bruce A. Hawes This is just an incredible piece.....must have been a great pleasure to have a part in getting it to the masses.
+Bruce A. Hawes This is Onaje Allan Gumbs. How you doing? it was a joy to have Noel record my song and to have Paul as the producer/arranger.

+Louis Rivera I, Onaje Allan Gumbs am the composer of Niteroi which was so-named for being the birthplace of Sergio Mendes

@@jazman49 Sweet, I love to get little tidbits like this from the writers/composers of music I like. Thanks for the insight!

First heard this tune on WWRL back when they played music. Haunting, but oh so smooth! Brooklyn born, classically trained violinist. Sad loss.

**Keyboardist and writer of this cut**
Dave Grusin on piano?
Why is it so hard to find his music?
+saladin719 I was part of Noel's band at the time of this recording
