- The submarine U-461 belongs to the Soviet project 651. It is the last still existing boat of this class of the largest ever built conventional underwater rocket cruiser. The boat serves as a museum in the museum landscape Peenemünde on Usedom and can be visited at different times.
Developed as a weapon against US aircraft carrier groups, the boat was built in the early 1960s and was launched in 1965 under the designation K-24, later renamed B-124. The diesel-electric powered submarine was traveling on its practice and patrol trips in the North Atlantic with four cruise missiles and torpedoes. The submarine had to appear to fire the cruise missiles.
Since 1988 in the reserve state, the U-boat was decommissioned in 1991. In 1998, two tugs brought the boat, renamed in the U-461, to Peenemünde.
Thanks for posting. Interesting external and internal views of the old submarine.
