VINTERGRAV's roots trace back to D's black metal band, Burial Oath, where the idea took form as a song title before transforming into a full-fledged musical endeavor. Incubating for years, the stars aligned during the solitude of the pandemic, breathing life into VINTERGRAV's soul-stirring essence.
D, a true multi-instrumentalist, has been entranced by the emotive power of music since a young age. With a passion for old worlds, he invites listeners to partake in his journey-one that transcends boundaries, while still using the emotional depth and archaic undertones of folk music.
'Forest Hymns' is a celebration of the natural world, where old folklore, fantasy and the mystical embrace of nature converge. An audible journey through ones own soul and connection to nature. The lyrics tell of transcendence and paint pictures of ancient myths and tales, while the music weaves simple yet intricate melodies that smell like the smoke of a campfire in a starlit night. Therefore, the album is not just a collection of songs, but an immersive experience-a profound reflection of D's reverence for nature's secrets and spiritual awakening.
Besides new songs, it contains reworked versions of tracks already found on the previous release, 'Skogkatt'.
VINTERGRAV's D handles most of the instruments and vocals throughout the album. However, 'Forest Hymns' also features a constellation of guest contributors who bring their unique talents to the mix: Sean Deth and Kakophonix of Osi And The Jupiter, Shawn Haché of Tithe, Martin Valkenstijn of Mosaic, Nico Schwappacher of Zwischenlichten, Raphael Weinroth-Browne of Musk Ox/Leprous and Michał Krawczuk of By The Spirits.
Most recordings were done in D’s home studio, the production was handled by Valkenstijn at his House Of Inkantation while Neil Schneider took over the mastering duties.
The album features a stunning piece of art created by Aesep Yasin Abdulah with sigils crafted by Urzeitkraft.

I was introduced to VINTERGRAV with Elderwoods. I didn't recognize their name immediately, but midway through the first song I realized this was the same artist, just by the instruments and vibes! I love the simultaneous peace and power in their music. There's no conflict - there's age, but presence, and a certain kind of joy.
