One thing that grossed me out as an engineering student was how other students talked about planned obsolescence like it was a good thing since you could force people to buy more of your product. It disturbs me that this mentality seems to be encouraged among engineers.

There is no positive aspect to planned or percieved obscolescence. There's a difference between 'cheap company makes cheap thing that breaks quickly' and 'big company makes product break to get more of your money' as the first could, maybe, be unintentional. The latter is exploitative and why we need legislative restrictions on these obscolescence tactics.

    • @agisler87
      @agisler87 5 років тому +16

Legislation is not the answer and the difference you pointed out are almost impossible to determine through a government body.
Additionally I doubt planned obsolescence is not actually done, or it's very rare. Our cars are far more reliable today then they were 15 years ago. This is why the average age of cars keeps increasing. Phones with batteries built in is because us consumers want ever thinner phones that are water proof. Most things are designed three way they are for a reason.
Planned obsolescence is just a unproven talking point for people who hate corporations.

An economy built on cheap throw-away components is inefficient. We're confused when it comes to cheap plastic goods. But imagine if our infrastructure were built this way. Roads that need resurfacing every week or month. Water and sewer pipes that need to be replaced every year. Power lines that need to be restrung every month. Lots of jobs! But really expensive and a terrible place to live. Your town would be a constant construction zone.
Repairability? Let's replace manufacturing jobs with repairmen jobs. It takes less material to patch an item than to throw the whole thing out and build new. If we priced garbage properly we'd see far less plastic waste and an economic shift toward more durable, repairable goods. For those things that turn over quickly we should see recycleable or biodegradable materials.

Planned Obsolescence is in NO WAY a good thing. The Jobs it creates are hollow, demeaning and low wage. Cheap goods are meant to be disposable and get thrown away very quickly, adding to our monumental garbage and waste problem. Fact of the matter is, Obsolescence of any kind is *unsustainable* both in terms of a business standpoint (as people learn about your bad practices) and an environmental one. My grandfather has a pair of 50 year old JEANS. *JEANS* for fk sake! Yet we can't get anything to last more than 5 years anymore because we have a Throwaway economy.

Products should definitely have more longevity. I agree that perceived obsolescence is mostly societies own fault. But there's no reason (from a consumer standpoint) that companies should make products that are designed to fail. It's a rip off. Perceived obsolescence = our own fault / planned obsolescence = shame on greedy companies.

I'm Canadian. My truck is 12 years old and I'm hoping to get another 10 years out of it. Unfortunately not everyone here is like this. There is a culture of leases and trade-ins. People are trading 3 year old cars for new ones. It's driven by the dealerships who aggressively sell based on monthly payments rather than the total cost of the car. Many people expect to have a monthly car payment as much as they expect to have a mortgage. They would rather have the same payment and always drive a new vehicle despite the massive increase in their overall investment.

? System is the problem. Slavery!🏡 Our Lives should be around these Great Qualities.
1, Show all living creatures; all the love and kindness as much as you can.
2, Only try to be honest with yourself. If you try to be honest with others, you will get into big trouble soon or later.
3, Aim only one target at a time; otherwise you are chasing two rabbits and you will miss both. So, the reason behind it. Have one powerful reason and never ever give up the one you want the most.
4, Don't try to be good person only but be the powerful person. We will grow to be the one or we will die. There is no other choice.
5, Always learn and look for to improve something your life.
6, You are not alone. Love and faith the high power reduces unnecessary stress in life. But never completely rely on it.
7, Success and happiness are the byproducts of our usefulness. So, always increase the possibility of success.
8, Life is not going to be easy. Because of our unnecessary things. Eliminate all the unnecessary things as much as you can by organising yourself well with the environments.
9, Never believe anything without the proper evidences.
10, Always try to give more than you take.
Because it is dignity/ character of the divinity within you.
People are controlled by system why?
The Cyclical Consumption is the current economy all over the World. It is making the scarcity problems of the earth finite resources to deteriorate day by day. Current Monetary System is legalised theft. Real money is Gold and Silver. Scarcity gives the money more value. Real money won't lose it's value. When Governments stay away from Gold & Silver then very easy to transfer the wealth / resources to upper class the Rich (Corporatocracy) Elite. When the Governments are printing out more new fiat currency with reserve banks, our old currency is losing its purchasing power everyday. They are printing millions of currency everyday. All governments and laws are existing right now to transfer wealth to upper class the rich elite. The USA Government & other Governments are in many countries, bailed the investment banks & financial institutions in 2008 against the majority of the people. There is no democracy in any countries. Because of the Money System based on profits motive only above all else even humans lives and well-being. So, we do not have freedom to protect our values with the money so on. The violence, bankruptcy & all the negativities are build into the Monetary System of our society. All are owned (including ourselves) by Reserve Bank. Which is private cartel the corporation. So, in legal system, we are legally considered as chattel the properties. They make money in the capital markets with our birth certificates. They do not consider us as Humans. That's the truth. We are at the invisible war with the Elites (Corporatocracies). We have to fight for our Freedom. Resource Based Economy is the Solution. We have to declare the earth resources as the heritage of all the people of this world. So everyone has access to it. Please have your research about zeitgeist movement then you know the truth more.
🌎 As long as people continue to see themselves as separate from everything else, they lend themselves to being completely enslaved. Success depends on how well we relate to everything around us. Joy comes from that bliss of connectedness. I believe that unarmed truth and love will have the final word in reality. To love; you should have good heart. I am a good person until I see a person better than my standard of goodness. Being good is the progress towards a worthy cause. Love is God. Whoever lives in love, lives forever. How selfish it is to try to keep something forever? Love is all about nourishing, nurturing, sharing and expanding the love within you for all. The principle to which we adhere to is that we have kindness of love at heart for the whole of mankind. As long as there is the unnecessary differences within us; we can not live peacefully so we have to eliminate all the unnecessary differences among us so we can love all. People abilities may vary but not there true love. If we love a person/ God for a reason then we love the reason but not the person. No reason is the reason to love the person because true love never fails. So do not compare or measure the true love as first or the last but love all truly. If you love people truly then you can understand people. If you don't love then you don't understand people at all.
Well, I truly love God. I am not religious but very spiritual person. So, I believe 1) Religion is the beliefs in someone experiences But spirituality is having my own experiences. The mainstream religions people promote religious ideology by giving guidelines and guide but In my spiritual life; I do not want anyone or anything between God and me to restrict my freedom to worship God. 2) We do not need any authorities to do good work. The god work is the good work always. In contrast; organised mainstream religions are claiming that they have the authorities to do God works as leaders so on. 3) God is not capable of doing wrong thing, change the past for us and create anything out of nothing for us. Nothing means not anything. So, even God is limited. The mainstream religious people believe that God is unlimited 4) God wants us to take responsibilities for our righteousness life but not for all the consequences of our actions because they are continued to exist among us. So, How can god punish us for all our consequences? The mainstream religious people believe we are full of sins because of all our actions. 5) Freewill is an illusion. People always choose the perceived path of greatest pleasure. So, we do not have choices all the time. In contrast teachings of the mainstream religions are promoting people to do god's will always because we all have choices of freewill always. 6) We can not separate everything into groups. So, everything for good and evil and there's no success and failure for everything. If everything is real then real things can not be threatened. Once you come to understand that God/The Holy Spirit is in each of us, You will no longer need a Book to tell you how to live. Then why we need religious scriptures? The Virtue is the expression of the basic goodness in our actions. The Basic goodness is the fundamental worthiness of every individuals. We are worthy to God always in everything. 7) Beliefs in a cruel God makes a cruel man. No matter what; every living creatures has the right to live and What makes their life cheap? Everything depends on everything. Nothing too big or too small in value. We can not love and hate at the same time; Being a vegetarian means love without cruelty happily. The mainstream religious people are killing people and sacrificing animals in the name of God. They promote God's cruel punishments. The Punishment is endless for Sinners/Devil according to religious scriptures. But God is love always. Overcome hate with love. If all religions for peace, unity? No way. Because they are not for peace. 8) Well, The God gave us everything to go from moment to moment in our lives as we do our part and pray only to thank god then the Love is in progress. The Love is always for everyone. We are always worthy of the God's love. Our greatest fear is; not to be loved by anyone but we are all loved by someone. When we eliminate all our unnecessary differences among us then true peaceful life is possible with the true love. If we can't find the peace within ourselves then we will never find it anywhere else. 9) This is the Fight for independence and freedom of humanity to worship God freely without religious guide and guidelines to restrict us. Unnecessarily, We do not want third party controls over us in anything ; especially in spirituality. 10) Revive Survive Thrive. Sincerely, The Real Peacemaker against religious oppression.
Truth About Health/Drugs Industry Because Of It Your Life At High Risk The drug industry is a 1/2 trillion dollars a year worldwide conglomerate. Almost 300 billions dollars just in North America. That is really big business. What would happen if everyone were well? There is no money in health. You see, good health makes a lot of sense but it doesn't make a lot of dollars. Because everything they do is toxic. Every drug they use, prescription drugs, all drugs are liver toxic, bar none. If you've had amalgam fillings put in your mouth by dentists. It is highly toxic. There's cancer because most of the chemos are themselves carcinogens. To view the tumor as the cancer and we know the tumor is not the cancer. The cancer industry is 200 billions dollars a year. The more work they get, the more profit there is. You have to dismantle; If the truth ever came out about what we would need to do. 30% of people of females in America are at risk of getting, will get cancer of the breast. The ones that are already dead have been grossly mistreated by the medical profession and by the government that supposedly is supposed to encourage free research and development of all possibilities. Why would medical doctors who studied medicine and practice medicine and are heavily funded by pharmaceutical companies why would they go and look into vitamins? That they never had the answer orthomolecular. And as more and more of our population start taking their health into their own hands, there's going to be even more and more of changes. It can't go on the way it is. The system is failing apart. We must make nutrition the primary prevention strategy for the population. You are what you eat. You are everything that you have ever done to yourself. The choices you make directly affect the outcome of your life. - (Food Matters Documentary in Netflix)

Anyone who's had to go to a dealership for repairs can tell you a similar story. "I took it in for an oil change and 'legally' can't get it back until X part is ordered and X system passes checks. Repair costs more than the car so buy this model on sale"

Electric cars are far more durable than IC cars. ICEs are under crazy stresses and heat, loads of moving parts. Electric cars can be made with a tenth the number of parts so are cheaper to make and repair. Remember the first cars were electric before ICs dominated. Way, way easier to drive... turn it on and go vs. crank, fuel/air mixture, clutch, gears, choke, fuel additives. Electrics just sucked for range.

Yeah, planned obsolescence is scummy, and unfortunately there's not much you can do about it as long as companies have incentive to do so, which until our culture changes, they won't.
However, perceived obsolescence is kinda on us...
If we stopped trying to out-compete each other's egos to have the latest and greatest, we wouldn't fall for that BS.
If your device has a genuine fault (possibly thanks to planned obsolescence) then replace it.
My last phone I had since late-00's, and only upgraded two years ago because of battery issues.
People need to stop thinking they need the latest £/$1000 phones, you really don't.
Electronics aren't fashion, stop acting like it.

But also the thing is, those jeans still work perfectly even if you can't remove that stain no matter how hard you try, so why throw it away? The way I see it, people who buy flagship phones would spend that much money on something else. People who buy the newest apple products that come out aren't usually the ones who complain about rent prices. And I say this as someone who also kept his old phone for 8+ years and only upgraded when it stopped working.

+Th4tGuyll +Xero I think new phones are part of fashion...or, at least they are another example of keeping up with the neighbors where it isn't necessary, the problem is fashion itself and that fear of somehow being lesser, that's what we have to work on.
I hope your aware however, that many can't actually afford these new devices, there are many, many people who go into debt for this stuff.
They aren't concerned about money enough, when they should be.
There's plenty of debt statistics you could look up if your really interested in that facet, don't take my word for it.
But at least be aware of the idea that some are being downright foolish with money, regardless of how common or not it is.
That might be partly not being taught enough about managing money and avoiding debt....but I think it's more that fear of not keeping up with other things.
It's also worth noting that when someone is fearful of not fitting in, they are also likely to be exactly the kind of person to also look down on others for exactly the same reason.
So when you met someone who is like this, make the effort to calm down their fears and start being not so concerned about that practice, show them you care about them regardless of who they are, and what they own, talk to them about who they are as a person, or any other small thing to start.

Yeah, people treat it like fashion, which they really, really shouldn't for their own good.
To be fair, people shouldn't treat fashion like fashion either, cause that stuff's expensive too.
I am very aware that there are people who have such an obsession with keeping up with the Jones' that they in-debt themselves. Their rationality blinded by their fear of not being with the trend, causing them to make downright stupid purchases with money they don't have (one of my relatives was this kind of person).
At the end of the day, if people stopped worrying about competing with other people to be trendier and newer than everyone else, because that what the core of this fear is about and what companies prey on, then none of this would be happening....
People wouldn't have to be learning money management to avoid going into debt to buy that sweet new phone that is essentially the same as the last one with slightly better specs and gimmicks (which is most likely a clone of what everyone else is already doing [looking at you apple])

No longer letting phones support the latest OS is pressure to buy new phones. It may be longer term, but it's the same thing. The updated OS makes the phone no longer able to use it incompatible with many desirable features, such as the new apps they mentioned already. This then puts pressure on the consumer. "Get the latest phone with the latest OS or you'll be left behind by all your friends. You don't want that, do you? You want this app. You need this OS. You have to get the new phone to do that." It's the same seedy, abhorrent practise, as the phone will work for many more years if mechanical failures don't catch it first. Nokia bricks still work now. It would be the same with any phone discarded for not having the latest OS or the ability to use new features or apps.

    • @chillinchum
      @chillinchum 5 років тому +7

+Ghiaman1334 I think there's a balance that can be struck.
I've had my phone (a nexus 4) for nearly 5 years now, and for at least 3 of those years I wished I had more internal storage (it doesn't have an SD card slot but that's a different matter altogether.), I haven't upgraded from 4.4 though, but there have been a couple of apps that just aren't supported, not a huge loss, but I don't think I can hang onto this thing forever, and the battery is having a problem....even if I could easily replace the battery, I don't have any reason not to get a new phone.
But it won't be an overly expensive phone, and it may just be marginally better then my current one.
The only reason to be so upset about upgrades is because we've swung the pendulum too far out of balance in a particular direction.
Upgrades can be perfectly ok, and even the more frugally minded consumer can desire them and it be entirely due to their own desire, not what others try to force down their throat.
Yeah, for some people a dumb brick phone is exactly suited to them especially in light of these practices, which I don't like very much either. But for me, I do want a smart phone, and...yes, I do need a smartphone for note taking, browsing, mp3 player, and any other complex organization tools and such that I'm not confident dumber phones can do for me.
(And don't try to convince me a dumb phone can do everything I need, it's just going to become a dumb argument, just take my word for it I know what I want.)

    • @Ghiaman1334
      @Ghiaman1334 5 років тому +6

I'm not saying replacing phones is unnecessary, overly menacing or always forced, but the mechanical upgrades, monitored and adjusted lifespan of certain parts and necessity to use certain apps or services in the modern world make it more and more likely that these choices aren't entirely of one's own volition. With these factors in play, changing phones can become more of a societal habit or trend as oppose to a necessity after malfunction.
And I mentioned the brick phone not as an alternative but as an example of how possible longer phone lifespans can be. With proper services and more care put into phones' longevity, perhaps at the expense of certain factors such as weight, charging time, even processing power, phones could last a long time. If, for instance, the typical android charging port was more sturdy, my second or even first phones might not have already died, and as I don't necessarily need a powerful phone, I'd still be using them.

There is a 3rd, less sinister form not mentioned here: Cyclical Obsolescence. This is where you intentionally build a product as cheaply and quickly as possible, without any focus on durability, because the market involves a learning curve or is still maturing. You see this a lot in high-skill fields and emerging tech: drones, photography, instruments, etc. You're just making an entry-level product that a user is going to trash and upgrade once they familiarize themselves with the field. See it a lot in tools, too. Buy a drill for a one-time project, realize you keep using the drill, buy a better drill when it breaks.

We need to abandon the profit motive, artificial scarcity, and transcend the notion of property ownership, and instead transition towards a resource based economy in order to create a society that has concern for sustainability and public health.
Planned obsolescence is a consequence of production for profit rather than utility. If we were to produce goods that are built to last and are modular in design, then we can meet people's needs for longer while dramatically decreasing running resource use.

Capitalism is the most resource based economic system ever created.
Without interference (key point), capitalist markets allocate resources to those uses which are valued the highest through pricing. Companies will only value those resources higher if there is consumer demand for what they can produce with them, at that price point. Consumers will only demand goods at that price point if the transaction results in a higher utility for them vs other options.
Profit itself is a part of the mechanism. Crudely speaking, profit is return on investment. The companies that provide the best opportunities for ROI (adjusted for risk) are allocated capital. Companies that can't provide ROI because there is no demand for their product, or they produce in a wasteful way won't receive as much capital.
The whole system is based on utility and the use of resources. Profit isn't some nefarious thing - it helps guide the world to allocate resources in the way that is of most value to human beings (or highest utility). Not to say that there isn't some bad actors, but that that problem would exist with whatever system you arranged an economy in.

Don't know when it became public knowledge (perhaps after you made this video), but it is now fairly well known that phone manufacturers (and those who maintain their OS) will implement forced "patches" which will reduce the effectiveness of your phone, possibly making it useless. They can force it to run more slowly, make core apps and functions cease to work, or make various parts work much harder than they'd normally have to so they burn out faster.
With how prevalent connectivity is these days, it is actually pretty easy for a company to retro-actively render their product useless to the consumer. Legally, this should be considered theft, since somebody paid for the product, and it is being taken from them by means beyond their control and not honestly disclosed by the manufacturer or retail location at time of purchase...but laws haven't kept up with technology.
While I understand that, logically, something that is more complicated is *usually* easier to break, that is not the entirety of what we see in the market today. One could argue that making a product slightly better would increase its cost, but we already pay an increased cost. Cars, for example. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, new cars are 617.43% higher than they were in 1935, adjusted for inflation of course. Some of that will be due to things like safety advancements, power windows/doors, Bluetooth connectivity & more speakers, etc...but 617.43%! We pay far more than we should, for cars that are designed to begin breaking down, depending on the manufacturer, in 5-15 years.
Ever wonder why the moment you finally pay off a car, it starts having serious issues that require costly repair? It isn't a coincidence...

My iPhone 6S from 2015 is still snappy, OS-current, and a good looker in general. I understand the psychology behind perceived obsolescence, but really, bruh? If you’re that sensitive to social stimuli, I think you might need to do some soul searching and figure out how to root yourself in your own identity. And to be clear, this isn’t a snarky retort, I mean well, you’ll feel better once you sustainably feel less pressure from society.
If I ever start a car company, my aim will be to produce cars that last a VERY long time, like vehicles from the 1940’s - 1960’s, but with the most reliable technologies of the time. In my view, it’s fair to pay for utilities repeatedly, but once you buy that car, you should feel comfortable that aside from periodic maintenance, it’ll hold up well for you over an extended time frame.
And I do plan on starting a car company like no other in recorded history, once I get my technology right (hoping to get my break with prototypes within the next 5 years).
Whether I do or don’t, we need companies that are good to their customers. Enough of this obsolescence trash (literally, get it?).
Best wishes. Oh, and if you ever hear about float circuit technology enabling the world’s first actual propeller-less, wingless flying cars, that’s my work.

They're trying to transfer the gaming-PC mentality to phones which... honestly never need to do much hard processing. Yes BUT those "small companies" are also the same companies that pay lower "non living pay" jobs to their employees, and though they do not offer a good wage, they still jack up the price of what it actually costs to make those products as though they pay top dollar labor costs when they don't!!! For example I worked at a company that told their own customer that they were paying me $11 an hour when the reality of it was I only earned $7 an hour!! I KNOW THIS, because the same company accidentally gave me a sheet with an itemized list of parts, labor, and other "costs" that was also given to the customer to how much it was going to cost to build said product!! And when I questioned why the labor cost reflected $11 and NOT MY ACTUALLY PAY, (which I was the only person in the whole shop that knew how to build this product) I was told to "shut up and mind my own business"!!! And even on their own paper work it listed the cost of the parts "per item" and altogether there was only about $30 worth of parts into a unit which they sold at retail for about $1000!! So think about this the next time you buy anything!! After all there is probably a guy standing at a machine that makes $8 an hour, to press a button on the machine!! And every time he presses that button (every five minutes or so), the machine makes 100 parts in that time making about 3000 parts every hour (roughly)!! And the materials to make that part only costs around .0006 in plastic product that is injected into the mold of that machine!! Yet you are paying $1000 for a cell phone that realistically only cost about $6 to make even thought the company is telling you that they spent $2000 a month on say electricity a month or $600 on heat and so on which is ALL FIGURED INTO each product they make and they do not actually JUST MAKE your cell phone!! In fact many companies make a huge range of products some of which make them even more money has well!! And many of those products like your cell phone are made on the exact same equipment as well!!! And many companies get you the consumer to pay for things like their property taxes, yes that is why the itemized break down of a product is so important and don't think for a moment that the company doesn't pass their cost for school and property taxes on to you!! After all why else would a iPhone cost $1000 when it only takes about $0.40 in labor, $0.60 in energy, and $40 in actual parts to make?! And remember companies get sub contractors to give them "in bulk deals" so Apple might pay a company that actually makes their iPhone Screens (Probably Samsung) to sell them 60,000 LED screens for just $0.30 a unit, BUT THEY ARE BUYING 60,000 of them so that is a great deal between the two companies!!! And both are making money at it!!! I know this because I have worked in these companies!! And the two brands will partner up on certain projects of course the one company I worked for built of all things Voting machines but it is the same no matter where you work!! And we did not just build voting machines either!! In fact I worked in 7 different departments and I build many things like computer monitors and power supplies and power distribution boxes that powered machines to make computer chips!! We even made parts (electronics) for air planes and cell phone parts also as well!! And on some of the things I made where I was the ONLY PERSON THAT KNEW HOW TO MAKE THEM, I could make 60 units in an hour while I was only paid $7 an hour to make them!! So I was only paid $0.12 an hour on each unit I made roughly!! It isn't like you get rich working in a factory anymore, and the pay is so lousy you can't afford to live on what they offer you either!! Yet they tell the customer it takes an hour to make one unit when it really doesn't and then lie and tell you they are paying me $11 an hour to make it when the reality they are not paying me that either!! It is like how car dealers jack up the price of cars by including things like "shipping costs" when the car was sent to the dealer on a train for around $5 a unit and the train dropped off 80 cars a week to their distribution point regardless that your car was on it or not!! The dealership will still "tell you" that your car was shipped for $1500 from the manufacturer like they had the thing shipped on a special plane that ONLY YOUR CAR would fit on!!

Smartphones do have planned obsolescence in a very proplematic way: Software. There are brand-new Android Phones out there sold with outdated versions of Android. It is almost mandatory to replace your phone every two years (high-end), every year(middle), immediately(low end). Apple being a noteworthy exception as it provides updates for the phone until they cannot run it properly anymore (though I'm sure they could still handle them except for the 32-bit to 64-bit switch). Why can't it work like LinuX and Windows: Your machine can run it? Then your machine can update it!

What also matters a lot in these cases is that making many of these devices repairable or more durable comes with increased prices and bulk as well. When companies are trying to cut costs everywhere because pennies could decide wether or not customers would buy their product it's easy to see why they often opt into making stuff that just works as long as the warranty lasts.

Razors get even worse... they sell you a handle and maybe a couple of cartridges for it. You buy a pack of cartridges when they wear out and then you go to buy more cartridges but now they're no longer available. Instead, there's a new razor - with more blades per cartridge and a different mechanism at the back so the cartridges for this won't work on any other razor and you now have to buy a new handle (with one or two cartridges), throw away the old handle and then you buy a pack of cartridges and when you go to buy more, they're no longer available...

This is why Toyota still does so well. They still try to build products the best they can build them while others build everything to fail asap.
My Toyota is a 2005 Tundra. It now has 360k miles and still don't burn oil between oil changes and is very reliable. It still runs/drives as smooth as a new one and driven daily. Had 300k+ miles on our last two (1)1981 Toyota pickup (2) 1994 pickup, both still ran/drove perfectly fine. The 1994 had a clutch replaced that was only major from either. Other than oil changes I've not done any work at all to my Tundra in over 4 yrs. These trucks just keep right on trucking.
I drive interstate trips all the time & never worry about it breaking down. In fact I've yet to have my first major repair to date on it. Id drive across country today in it if I had too, Id put gas in & go man..
Several Tundra & the T100 trucks have made it past One Million miles. Remarkable build quality. Thank you all at Toyota for still building them like you used to do....🤗. Looking at a new Lexus LS for my wife today. Beautiful!

@Stedan C: Suppose that Android really gets at most 3 years of support and iphone does at least 6. Even then, yes, because you get half the support in time for half the price(in case you did not know, there are Androids on the market with equivalent performance but half the price), consider the price drop and realize that after getting an Android and 3 years of support, if you are done with it in 3 years(which you shouldn't if it's half the price of the latest iPhone and end of support does not equal end of the product, which you seem to not realize) you might now get a new Android for the same half of the price with better hardware. So for the same money you would get the same amount of support and better hardware. Simple maths. I seriously cannot understand why people still argue that iPhone has a better quality/price when it obviously does not.

They can push out OS updates that can:
    - artificially cripple your device performance
    - reduce your battery life
    - make your apps incompatible
They can do that and more, all with a grin and a shitty excuse. Planned obsolescence sucks, nothing good comes out of it.

I have lost count of the number of electrical products I have bought that break for no apparent reason. I once bought a paper shredder for almost £40 and it was supposed to be 1 step down from industrial use and it only lasted 4 days of very light use, I got a replacement and that too broke. People say to me that I am just unlucky, either I'm EXTREMLY unlucky or something else is at work. It is really annoying, you buy something from the shops and it doesn't seem to last. I once bought a shirt and it unravelled in parts almost the very moment I wore it! I have had products that just snap in 2 for ne reason. I have bought 18 sunglasses in a row, and they just snap in the middle as if by magic, I only have to pick them up for it to break on me. Nothing these days seems to have the quality you would expect from decades of advancements. There is no excuse for poor quality, there just isn't. Sometime you look at what went wrong and you think to yourself, how the hell did that get past quality control? I just don't get why things don't last, where as 30 years ago things still work today, but you buy something today and it is dud in no time!
