      Your video sparked my interest in installing film, especially where a burglar can easily climb through or reach the deadbolt. I purchased the film you reviewed and I found that the optical quality and attachment to the frame can vary a lot. I actually made a video that discusses how to improve both: ua-cam.com/video/DAs-B9lvUi8/v-deo.html

    I've been installing window film for 22 years and owned my own company for over 20. You mention that you are using an 8mil safety film and although it is difficult to tell; the film in the video doesn't look to be that thick. Whenever I have used an 8mil film it is extremely thick and very difficult to cut through. It is also difficult to install and requires a lot of pressure to be applied properly. Using a hard card wrapped in a paper towel won't be enough.
    I am not trying to be critical just voicing my "expertise".

    Pretty much a clear polyester with adhesive to hold the glass haha. And tip from a guy who handles with films and vinyls daily. Spray windex (yes the glass cleaning windex) onto the window and lay the film or vinyl onto the area you windex. This allows you to peal the film back up and to relay it back down. Also when you squeege it onto the window with windex underneath it, the windex helps break out the air bubbles! Also cut your sheets larger then your window so when its layed down you can cut the access material off.
    Friendly advice

Stuff if pretty pricy but gives me a piece of mind that it will significantly increase the time it takes someone to gain access also having on both sides will keep all broken glass contain.

Now I’m concerned it’s going to cost an arm and a leg to reinforce it! 😂 It’ll be well worth it though, peace of mind is priceless. Also it’ll be nice to know it’ll slow down an intruder enough to gimme a chance to lock and load if I’m home. Thanks Vgp 1982

    I think that when we do things to bring up the protection level of our homes in particular highly visible ones we send a message to the criminal element. simply put "I am expecting you . I am ready for you!" this hopefully makes they move on to an easier target (wish it would stop them altogether but we know it won't.) This product is another good thing to look at. note to those of us with a window in a door or those looking to buy one some come with shatter resistant glass and some don't , beware of what are buying. Learn from my mistake it will cost less in the long run.

    My way takes way longer to install, uses more material and the cost goes way up. You completely remove the glass out of the frame and cover both sides of the glass in one continuous sheet, (like wrapping a present). Most intruders will give up after 10 hits of getting nowhere.
    If any intruders persist past ten hits and you are at home, you have time to deal with them however you see fit that allows you to sleep at night.
    And yes, you will have to gently clean both sides to reduces scratches, especially on the outside where outside dirt and debris builds up quick.

    • @JeffsFreedomGarage
      @JeffsFreedomGarage 6 років тому

      I forgot to mention the other down side. At night, when it's dark outside, with the inside lights on, it's hard to see outside. You just have to turn off the lights inside when you want to see outside.

    • @wilcoxtactical3716

      I dont think you're removing the glass and reinstalling it. Windows are sealed and filled with gas to prevent them from building up condensation. If you removed the glass and installed on both sides you'd compromise the design of the windows and would likely damage the windows, you'd ruin all insulation abilities of the windows and most certainly cause condensation issues.

    • @JeffsFreedomGarage
      @JeffsFreedomGarage 3 роки тому

      @@wilcoxtactical3716 - I didn't cut the seal that's in-between the glass panes that hold the gas. I took the outside casing off the glass, (where the handle and locks are attached), and wrapped the glass with film, like a sandwich, and reinstalled the casing.

    Hammer around the edge of the window where it meets the frame, and the whole thing can be pushed in.
    Ideally, remove the glass from the frame, apply the film, over lap at the edges, re-install into the frame so it sandwiches the film & glass.

  • @civiprepper
    @civiprepper 5 місяців тому

    The strength of the windows is not in the film but its frame. If you take normal security film. Remove the glass from its wooden frame and route into the frames a 1cm channels you can then embed steel U channel with 8mm glass and film that won't look any different from the outside.

    I suggest you look into a 'door hardening kit'. It is basically long pieces of metal with the 3 inch screws making it so you have to rip the frame out before the door can be forced open. Maybe a side by side product comparison with other window films or hardening kits? Just an idea, keep the videos coming.

    Hi Canadian Prepper. Did you put structural sealant or some other kind of bonding material to attach the security film to the window frame? Do you think it would be possible to install the security film with an overlap to go over the frame and then use screws to attach the film to the frame and then use some kind of wood or vinyl veneer to cover the frame to make it look nice? Do you think you could do another video showing how long it would take to go through the security film if you attached the film to the frame with structural sealant?

    What I like about stuff like this the most:
    Where you mentioned for a second that something like this enhances a burglar hurting himself.... you were spot-on; and when a burglar injures himself then there's a better chance he'll leave behind DNA.
    Now if a person lives in a large crime-ridden city, then the cops probably wouldn't collect any blood DNA found at a simple burglary; but in a mid-sized or smaller town the cops will almost certainly collect that found DNA and see if they can't identify the burglar.
    One burglary (that a friend of mine investigated) the burglar cut himself on the window when he broke it. The burglar actually then 'helped' himself to the victim's band-aids in the bathroom. My friend was able to lift a latent print off the Band-Aid box and identify the burglar that way.
    Anyways long story short: products like this makes the job harder for the burglar. And the harder a burglar has to work, then the more chances he'll injure himself and leave behind DNA or evidence that will allow him to be later identified. :)

    CP, I've been window tinting since 1998. In order to keep the security film from collapsing in, it really needs to be overlapped into the frame. Meaning that the ideal installation is to remove the glass from the frame (not practical for most obviously), install the security film to the edges of the glass, let it cure for a couple days, then reinstall it into the frame. This is the main reason I haven't installed this in my own home - because I don't feel like removing the glass from the frame.
    However, I've been brainstorming for about a year and wonder if heavy duty packaging tape stuck to both the frame and security film would "prevent" the film from pushing in. This way, the window wouldn't need to be removed. Would you be willing to revisit this? Lol

    • @CanadianPrepper
      @CanadianPrepper  6 років тому +1

      I was thinking about something similiar, there needs to be a stronger way to transition, indeed I may revisit the issue again if I can find a solution, but being an experienced window tinter if you cant figure it out than I may not fair much better.

    • @unherdac
      @unherdac 6 років тому

      Canadian Prepper, I, like most who have watched this, sincerely appreciate this video you've made. I have wondered how effective this film would be if not installed behind the frame. I now know thanks to you. You've ignited a renewed interest within me to pursue this extra measure of security.
      One thing that some people aren't understanding is that home windows aren't tempered glass - with the exception of screen doors. Tempered glass is the glass that shatters into thousands and thousands of tiny pieces, similar to car windows.
      Because of this, I believe this film will be even more effective than your test showed, despite not being installed behind the glass frame. I'm fairly confident that it will hold the window glass more securely but, obviously, I'm not 100% sure.
      Yes, I admit, I've been tinting a long time and have tinted things from cars, boats and buses to residential and business windows but I've never had the opportunity to install security film. This is why your video intrigues me.
      Again, if you'd be willing to test installing this film again but using caulking vs heavy duty clear tape, I feel it would be a great contribution to your viewers! Thanks my friend and keep up the great work.

      New View Reviews You could make a frame, which fits inside the original opening for door window. You install the film first, and afterwards put that additional frame to support that filmed glass. Frame should be fastened properly with many screws. This makes the window area a bit smaller, but isn't necessarily ugly. Quite easy job since you don't have to remove anything but just add.

    Many windowglasses are fastened with weak strips of wood. After installing the film, some stronger fasteners should be used. Otherwise one blow may be enough to remove the glass anyway. A little bit wider wooden or nylon bars with proper screws would make a difference.
    Low lying glasses in doors are risky for children, it's good to secure them with film.

    If you watch the actual product demonstrations by the companies themselves, they say that while it will help on a window to avoid shattering and slow down a break in, to really get max strength from it, they use a thick black caulk around the window after installation, to secure the film into place, and that made the demonstration far more impressive as then you can see the entire window shatter, but the black stuff they used basically bonds the film into place, making it even more effective then just putting it alone over a window.

    what would happen if you put it on both sides of the glass?

    • @CanadianPrepper
      @CanadianPrepper  6 років тому +2

      Would increase the strength but may be able to be peeled off the one side, but I doubt if properly applied you would see it on there.

      i was hit by a F3 tornado about 4 years ago. we where dead center of the path and luckily only had some roof damage and 2 broken windows. our neighbors had much worse with trees falling on there homes. but no one was hurt. so we where all lucky that day.

      Elements, humidity, etc. would shorten the life of the adhesive and film. Really needs to be installed on the inside.

    You only show the application of this film on one side of the glass what would be better is applying it to both sides of the glass as this would make it more effective

    Like many here have already said, ...anything that buys you a few more seconds is probably well worth the effort. But, can you imagine if "windows" were being invented today? And some idiot said, "...well, ...we could make them out of glass." He would be laughed out of the laboratory. We make glass windows and then put locks on them....lol. Oh, humans, ...you're so funny.
