Great doc! The only thing I would say is that we Galicians say "pulpo á feira" or "polvo á feira", not "pulpo a la gallega". The latest is how non-Galicians call it, obviously. In Galician it would be galega anyways, not gallega. Gallego/a is in Spanish, not Galician. Apart of that, even I learnt some staff from the video!

Having walked the Camino de Santiago several times, this by far is my favorite Rick Steve's Europe episode.
Unfortunately they don't show it very often on the PBS channels where I live. They seem to show all the other episodes about Spain except for this one. I can only assume it's because of the segments involving the bullfights and the San Fermin bull runs. PBS being the PC gutless wonders they can be at times, surely caved in to whiners who cried foul. Fortunately I can watch it here.

Bullfighting is related to all of Spain, north, south, east and west. The oldest running of the bulls registered, there may be older, is in Cuellar, Segovia, north of Spain. There are stone statues of bulls in the north of Spain thousand years old. The Celts that invaded the peninsula ended up mixing with the Iberian people and there was a mix of cultures. Portugal also has bullfights, though they do not kill the bull, as in the south of France. Flamenco is more from the south and paella is a traditional plate from Valencia.

@@Pleittor No, sir. Bullfighting has never been a tradition in the Canary Islands, where I come from. Thank God. For me, they are a barbaric custom that should be abolished, no matter how "artistic" or some kind of "'cultural' heritage" some might consider that to be. I love Spain, but hideous Spanish custom ashames me; and I guess that nowadays it ashames most of Spaniards as well.

It's not all just for "entertainment".
Those bulls are not just regular bovines. They are the last remaining undomesticated wild cattle that once roamed the entire cost of the Mediterranean Sea from Iberia to the Levant. They require vast expanses of land to live on, and if it were not for bullfighting, none of the landowners that raise fighting bulls would keep them around.
If you ban bullfighting, then you will condemn the last undomesticated breed of cattle in Europe to extinction.

I gave myself 5 weeks to walk the camino but did it in 24 days. It all depends on your abilities and how much you want to walk each day. I walked with no problem. You start to feel it after 25 klms. Your body tells you when to stop. You must take some rest days. To train, I walked in my city with my backpack. If you have hills or mountains to practice it's a good idea. The pilgrimage has about 3 mountain ranges to cross. It's very physical but your body gets stronger. It is an amazing experience. I met many people who became friends. You are always in the moment. It's physical, social, and then spiritual. I stop being religious after the camino (an atheist?). It certainly has an impact on you. Reaching Santiago was a let down. It's about the journey and not the destination. If you can go to Finisterre, you won't be disappointed. It was great to be by the sea. It's the cherry on top of the cake. Will do the camino Finisterre soon.

In fact, both gallego and portuguese languages share the very same Ibero-romance roots. On another note, I'd love you to talk about the regional languages and dialects in other european countries as well, which you never do when visiting them: 11 in France, 16 in Italy and no less than 53 in Germany.

at some point in our history , they sent human gladiators into an arena to be killed by lions. it was entertainment and part of the culture at that time ... im sure we could call that ART too, maybe we should bring that back and put PEOPLE into an arena to be killed by lions ... and cut off their ear as a trophy.
i wonder how many people in the audience of this video above will volunteer for that noble role.

It has helped me help Canadian friends plan a honeymoon, myself to travel around Europe (although it's been much too long since I've been back) and for my parents to plan their European holidays to Eastern Europe, Italy, and now this year, France. Thanks Steve! PS. I know your company keeps saying you really don't need tour guides for Finland as it's not a popular destination but I know with the right marketing the hidden gem that is Finland could become one. :) I spent 11 glorious, but cold, months there.
