The saying says the word was " a God '' not the God their is only one God and his name is Jehova, who happens to be Jesus father.

When Christ says "father is greater than I" means father is greater in presence than Jesus himself (who is currently incarnated as human and divine person). Jesus is willfully limited in a position of human as he cannot go to heaven without finishing the task remaining in Him. But presently father is free without any limitation (not as Jesus). So Jesus said Father is greater than I
