I saw him perform at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis, TN in 2007, sans Lisa (this was right after they broke up), and then after the show my friend Adam and I managed to get backstage, along with about 30 other people. They wheeled in a big cooler full of bottled beer and water for us, set up a sound system and put some groovy music on, then Damien (all introspective and shy) and the band came and hung out with us for about an hour. My friend Adam, all dreadlocks and tattoos, had come with me to Memphis on a sort of Jeff Buckley pilgrimage (on the 10th anniversary of Buckley's death, there in Memphis where he drowned in the Mississippi River after only one glorious album). Adam, ever the indomitable extrovert, practically stalked Damien around the room. I actually turned my back and to compensate energetically. Adam worked up his courage and asked Damien outright if he might play something for us. This seemed kinda rude to me, as Damien had just given one hell of a concert, turbo-charged, no doubt, by the emotion of his recent split with Lisa - all of their previous vocal duets were now solos, etc. Damien said all his gear was already loaded up on another bus that had just left. Then Adam mentioned that we brought our instruments. Damien surprised us both and said go and get them. So we did. We ran 3 blocks to our car, got our instruments and ran back, and had to talk the doorman into letting us back in. Ha. Out of breath and full of adrenaline, I plucked tentatively at my guitar for a few minutes before Damien walked over and took Adam's ukelele to play along. It was horribly out of tune! Gah! (Typical Adam...) I held out my guitar to Damien, who demurred, until I told him what an profound honor it would be. He sat down and started playing the opening strains of "Cold Water," and the entire room instantly went silent, and everyone sat down, enraptured. Someone dimmed the lights further, way way down. I found a single string on Adam's uke that was in tune and played some subtle accompaniment. Damien then played "Amie." What a voice! He filled the large room with such warm sound. It was truly amazing. Transcendent. And then... with an implicit nod to our Buckley pilgrimage, he played "Hallelujah," Buckley's most loved and well-known rendition of a Leonard Cohen song. Almost everyone sang along, albeit rather timidly. There was one verse Damien couldn't remember, so he cycled the chords a few times and looked at me and I fed him the next line: "You're faith was strong but you needed proof." Needless to say, as my effusive and ebullient description must surely convey, it was an immensely cool experience. And my guitar is all the more precious to me now. (It has also been played by Joseph Arthur and Sean Hayes, two of my other favorite living musicians and songwriters.) Afterwards, I thanked Damien in a heartfelt but casual way, and everyone dispersed, but not before nearly everyone offered words of deep appreciation to both me and Adam for making it happen. The more I thought about it, in the days and weeks to follow, the more I came to think that Damien must have needed that extra bit of communion as much or more than we did. With a few exceptions, that was one of the last tours Damien has done until now. So very glad to have him back. :-D

Honestly as a performing musician, I think this is one of the most profound and honest performances I have ever witnessed. We all strive in this craft to achieve that connection between song and artist and audience; the synergy that exists only in places where something special and genuine exists. I am touched and moved! I have always been a fan, but this is something more than even the usual Damien Rice experience.

I'll never forget seeing him at the Ryman in Nashville, and you could tell much of the audience didn't know him(the Ryman gets a lot of Ryman-goers and tourists who just want to see any show there) but as soon as he opened the show like this man...you could have heard a pin drop the whole way through.
Also storytime, the guy in front of us was totally on a date gone terribly wrong. The girl went to the restroom somewhere toward the beginning of the show...and never came back. Poor guy sat there fuming and heartbroken and stuck listening to some of the saddest heartbreak songs for another 2 hours!

I don't know why I like this artist so much.
I remember first hearing him, and being woken up by it. I remember thinking to myself that it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. This was back when I didn't know what it was to love romantically or had felt the bite of it. Not a child and barely a woman - I didn't understand. As I grew - imagination filled into understanding and its never lost this charm. Rather, the transparency of the mystery made it all the more dear. To me, this is the best kind of magic.

I had several friends listen to Damien and they always said his songs made them feel depressed. I don't know why but that has not been the case with me. I feel like there is a therapeutic quality to his voice and lyrics. It provides a catharsis of sorts, like having emotions buried deep within your soul released in a torrent. So, you sit there in semi darkness mesmerized by this man who can so eloquently express feelings you didn't even know you had. It's like being in therapy; only, someone else was doing all the talking while you're sitting there just nodding your head in agreement. After I've listened to him for at least an hour or two, I feel like I've had a good emotional workout and I'm ready to dance to upbeat songs like "Shape of You."

  • @audreyhasegawa9512

So I just got back from his Boston performance (4/8/2015). If you ever happen to read this Damien, I was the one saying I love you in French. Don't get me wrong, I love Damien, but it didn't seem as personal as his Montreal show that he play November 21, 2014. I really think that audience/venue/mood play HUGE factors in the whole experience of the show.
In Montreal, he played to the audience and was extremely charismatic. He came out of his shy, introspective shell and gave, what I thought, was the performance of his life. Literally, he had us all at opening of his show Elephant Gun to the close of his multiple encores, I Remember. Each song felt like a personal letter or almost personal ode that almost seem to say, I'm so sorry, things will be okay. Perhaps, as well, the performance felt like my favourite artist giving me a personal it's okay/healing moment as my boyfriend and I had just broken up two days prior. In any case, when he came out to sing The Professor/La Fille Danse, the audience went absolutely NUTS!!!! Most definitely, it was because he was trying to charm us with his broken French (hehehehehe awesome Damien). Additionally, his Volcano was awesome when he got the audience to sing the chorus. By far, though, the highlight of the show was when we invited an audience member on stage to role play Cheer's Darlin'. So he had admitted to us that he had gone to sushi and was already slightly "tipsy" from sake when he came on stage, but that's tots cool. We love you through and through Damien. Anyways, he begins the song by pouring them each a glass of wine and begins recounting the story (do you notice he changes it every time he sings the song??) So while he sings the song, he proceeds to finish off the bottle of wine with her, then orders a second bottle of wine for himself (she orders the rest of the sake to come on stage. As she stumbles off stage, he continues to strum and sing, though he forgets some of his lines (oops, its okay). Throughout the rest of his show he periodically checks up on her.
Literally, though, his performance was probably the highlight of my 20s. Hands down the best concert that I have EVER seen in my life. He had like 20 encores (each time he said that he would stop because he was going to get fined for playing more, the audience booed and said keep going....we even insisted that we would pay the fine for him if he did get one). For a set that was supposed to only last 1.5-2.0h, he played nearly 4. I think the only reason he truly stopped at I Remember was a) he was out of new songs to play and b) he was starting to drunk to the point of forgetting lyrics and claimed he had to be functional enough to get on a plane in NYC the next day. Also, it was the last show in his mini-tour of North America. I love hearing that brogue of yours, Damien, and I love love love hearing your charming nature. I will never forget that performance. I wish I could see you again in Montreal. I love you, Damien, and I cannot wait to see you again.
