By the time of this fight sergio was asking for food in madrid's churches, he was an illegal inmigrant in Spain coming from Argentina and in a recent interview told the story of how difficult and risky was going into england being an illegal inmigrant and how his "cutness" allowed him to go through migration stop at the airport. Many times he said that this fight changed his life for good, he was really struggling in his life and stressed about to win also beceause his father was present in the fight. An incredible life story from a guy from my city Florencio Varela. He said he is from quilmes...but we know you are from varela sergio!!! Vamos Argentina!!!
One thing you cannot dispute is Sergio’s heart. He wasn’t blessed with a granite chin like GGG, gets floored almost every fight, but every single time he got up to win the fight. That’s the type of dude you want on your side of things came down to it. Never gave up no matter the injuries or knockdowns
It also had to do with his fighting style, derived from serious injuries in his main hand. After being stopped a long time due to several broken bones on that hand, he was forced to change from an aggresive KO-pursuing style to a counter punch one. This made him expose his chin more and use a low guard in order to provoke aggresions and find his rival's spots with more ease. The dark side of this was a permanent knock down risk against him.
@@dltguitar6532 I'm just a Sergio fan, but in many interviews he said this fight changed his life. Step from ordering food in Madrid to this IBO world championship fight in just ten days. His story is amazing
Sergio is one of the most skilled fighters ever. A real showman aswell. He does not recieve the credit he deserves, but lately it seems that this is starting to change.
Jesus Christ, and this guy didn't put gloves on until he was 20 yrs old. That is absolutely unbelievable. This may as well be the definition of cluelessly plodding about after one's opponent. Its unfortunate that, at least from what we hear in the corners I believe, other than imploring him to be busier, it seems that there's little evidence of any sort of strategic assistance being offered to Williams. But...damn. Sergio's fighting with the confidence of someone who's been in the ring their entire life. In the last week I've watched a good amount of Sergio's fights for the first time (and posted some of them to my own UA-cam channel, hint hint, wink wink) and I wish I'd done so much sooner. Again, it amazes me he could give these kinda dominate performances over fighters who've been in boxing the majority of their lives. This fight must've taken place at a point prior to Antonio Margarito becoming a bit of a name as they mention Sergio's having had one loss coming in to the fight but, unless I missed it, they never mention who he lost to. I think Sergio's already an ATG without adding the "late start" context, but he's even more so when you do add in that fact. A VERY special fighter here.
Sergio was a WW when he lost to Margarito, he had recently moved up to and was at 154 in this fight.. Did Margarito have plaster in his wraps when he beat Martinez? Would have made Sergio's overall career record even better had he not fought Margarito or if he had been caught with something in his wraps if indeed he was cheating at that time. Martinez would have been 54-2 if Margarito had been DQ'd in their fight, then Sergio only had the losses to Paul Williams and Cotto. He had no chance in the Cotto fight, he was crippled and almost helpless. That brings his career down to a MD loss to Paul Williams which obviously could have gone either way. With those things in mind, Martinez was that close to going undefeated.
Sergio had a late start, but he was one of these guys who were naturally suited to boxing - I think Dwight Muhummad Qawi had a late start in the sport as well - Bernard Hopkins too - all these guys seemed to have the instincts to stay relaxed & pace themselves, & to make the right decisions during the course of a match, which isn't as easy as it sounds. Incredibly Sergio has come back now - 6 years after his retirement - 4 fight winning streak.

I dont care about the Cotto fight. Sergio was not himself, had the fight taken place some 10 to 3 years before it did, the result would have been different
Sergio is one of my all time favorites. My god I thought Tyson fury went down ez, Martinez does. Maybe it's a strategy. Or that he's off balance. He goes down so much but rarely seems actually hurt. Loving using him in this new undisputed game also.
Hermosa pelea

I've seen Martinez fight a few times and he's always been aggressive,i've never heard of Richard Williams and now watching this fight i know why, seem like his trainers would have had him spar with a few south paws before this fight,he wasn't ready and not in the same class as Sergio,Emmett aka Emilio***
A very tricky fighter Martinez. He fought an intelligent fight against a stronger fighter who didn’t prepare well physically for this fight. Congrats though for a well earned title.
There’s nothing wrong with Williams as the commentators would have you believe. Other than the fact he’s being out boxed. That’s the line when your guy is loosing all the time. The commentary Takes away from Martinez’s excellent performance.
How in the hell did Williams become champ Martinez Boxed the hell out of him And his corner all they had to do is tell him to make the fight ugly Body punches and hooks he didn't fight like a champ
Despite his losses n wins, Sergio Martinez is one the most skillful fighters ever.

One of the greatest runs from a fighter in his thirties, the Paul Williams fight is one of the greatest fights I’ve ever seen
Nope, Quilmes. Varela sucks
'Nobody thought this argentinian could be as tough as it seems'. Then he was world médium champion unified. XD
