Okuma is preparing to release its newly renovated Alijos Conventional Reel next year. I love this non-magnetic cast control! I've had mag reels before. The ramping of the magnets was ok on mag controlled reels to me over the years. So understanding a non-mag reel took a minute for me to absorb the mechanics involved.
I've used this unit in really bad weather. So since my hands were going to be wet all day i installed a Casting Trigger from John Truong of Boiling Tuna. Boy, my grip felt secured and i was able to center myself to really put some "oomph" into my casts! I was able to get a few small strikes but still looking for that "big boy" that'll stress the gearing to see how it'll fare on larger species.
More than testing & researching statistics every long cast i make i'm developing a trust with this unit. All hunters & anglers have to have trust in their equipment before tackling our intended prey. I'm in constant contact with the research developers on my progress. I still need to hook a substantial sized fish to deliberately put resistance on the internals. Right now weather is the issue. I got drenched making this review in the rain & wind & will be paying for it the rest of this week.

How did the casting tests go?
Extremely well. In the beginning the drag settings were way too strong so i called it in & the drag curve was lengthen. Imagine being too strong of a reel! And now with the new bearings it's more of a gradual ramp of power. This is by far my most trusted & powerful reel. Horsed in a 40lb ray like it was nothing.
What size would you recommend for Penn Carnage II MH 13’ rod? Also do these come left hand?
This is a reel slated for release possibly next year. It's the 12 size (15 & 16 would be fine too/like a Torium 30 & 40) & would fit a MH rating as the H rating of that rod i'd use a larger sized reel. I've let a number of anglers try this on location & everyone fell in love with it. The other day "Batman" was yanking on it but no drag-out fight yet. It can cast easier & farther than my Toriums. Just got to see how it reacts to load next. Recently everyone is taking notice of smaller reels with stronger drags to catch fish. The strike setting is 27lb with the max at 34lb. It has cast control! A non-magnetic cast control. I own many reels with a magnetic cast control & this system allows you to cast a country mile! It outcasts everything else i own. Left hand? I'm not sure as it's still in an early development stage.

What are the cons?
If i find anything that i find concerning i report back so it can be reviewed. There are other field testers around the World doing what i'm doing here. I'm putting the Alijos through the ringer as best i can. Next week i'll open it up to check for possible moisture intrusion. Last week it was out in the pouring rain on several days. I really love how far i can cast using this reel so far.
@@ScubaChris how did it go? does the internals hold up? im planning on getting one but i want a reel that can last me a long time...
