So Tim Cain, one of the head devs on this game, has a YT channel. And he's admitted on multiple occasions that they basically became drunk with freedom and took an absolute kitchen sink approach with this game; if someone had an idea, they threw it in. That's why this game is so full of things like raising the spirits of the dead to complete quests and the huge variety of responses to race, magical affinity, etc.

    • @TheLegitWeebs
      @TheLegitWeebs  Місяць тому +6

Highly appreciate this sort of approach, considering how a lot of modern games start with the idea of, "How can we monetize this", more so than putting in fun ideas.

I forgot to mention this in my other comment (and don't want to lose the heart) but one of the reasons Kerghan wants to kill everything is he thinks going to the afterlife is pointless when any necromancer can use his remains to bring him back. When you use the device however, in the ending where you convince him to give up, the device lets him perma-die so that nobody can bring him back. I'm not sure why Mandalore left that out.

  • @lich109

Arcanum, no joke, is one of the best games for a purely roleplay aspect. This is the kind of game where instead of sorting out truth from lies, you can just slay the person you're questioning, summon their ghost, then demand the answers in a way that compels them to give them to you. I think you might even be able to resurrect some after that but I don't quite recall. The name of the game is freedom in terms of story progression, and even now the only games that come anywhere near close are BG3, and Way of the Samurai 3.

That Arronax can join your party blew my mind when it first happened, especially when it turned out you could make a party out of all the others banished to the void you'd read about throughout the game. And Mandalore is underselling Kerghan a little, like Keghan himself says: he was the FIRST necromancer. You're usually just fighting a master necromancer in this sort of story. This time, you're up against the guy who INVENTED dark necromancy. Think about how powerful that guy would be after a few thousand years of study. It was a brilliant twist that actually made the final boss even more scary when I encountered it back in the day.

Your (and Mandalore's) point at 4:30 is one of the biggest travesties of the media industry; there are so many interesting worlds and stories that only have one or if we're lucky two entries, then nothing. A good example of this was Kingdoms of Amalur, there was one game made for that world, that was all we had. Thankfully, the IP was bought by THQ Nordic a few years ago and they remastered the game with new content (hopefully they're making a new game).

@ but again it’s only shoved down your throat when you don’t accept it. When have you ever had an ideology that you agree with forced on you? Most times you’ve already accepted it. Sure sometimes it can flop if it’s handled poorly, but every game with a story has a position. Being neutral to every stance is how you make a dull plot. Bioshock is a dig against radical individualism…Mass Effect takes jabs at soldiers being used and discarded when the threat is over…and I could throw a rock and hit a zombie game about consumerism from my window. Ya know?

@@KaitoGillscale You have half a point. But there are more unique opinions then there are people. It's not about wanting "our" politics to be seen, as everyone has different opinions - in fact, it's quite the opposite. Western people are generally highly accepting of the idea that other people have opinions worth respecting. When a game fails to respect people's reasonable opinions, then problems arise.
HBomberGuy said it *worst*. What he said implies that people only accept politics that align with their own, but he's wrong and it's the opposite. People don't like it when you tell them their beliefs are completely invalid. People want to be respected, or for the disrespectful to shut up.
You say Bioshock was a dig against radical individualism, but that's a rather biased view of things. Bioshock also brought up the evils of collectivization in recent history - it helped to sell Ryan's view. And then Ryan became a collectivist, and that's when the real evil started. It's position isn't a straightforward anti-individualist message, it's complicated and represents multiple beliefs in their most extreme form.

It is funny that in fantasy games I love the high-tech stuff or even the "psychic not magic" stuff, in low-magic games I try to go for the most high-magic and esoteric schizo builds, and in sci-fi games I'm drawn to whatever is the "totally not magic" of the setting like Biotics in Mass Effect (I don't include 40k here because, even though 40k looks like a sci-fi setting and the only real thing I care about in it are psykers, daemons, and the warp, it is a much more of science-fantasy setting than a sci-fi setting with schizo pulpy flashy psychic and bio powers).
I guess I'm just a contrarian, and that's one of my favorite things about Arcanum I like, even though the tech system is janky, it's playable enough (especially if you take magic stuff anyway like Speed of Fire and the Time Magic school for the Haste Effects).

56:00 I'm gonna have to be a bit careful about how to talk about this, but _that_ plot point was kind of a used trope in a lot of rpg's in the 90's and early 00's. Both paper and video games used it with a lot of variations. Ettercaps in the novel of BG1 did that to make more of themselves (and I'm pretty sure that's where Goblin Slayer got the idea), Shadowrun had a few plot points where a certain organization using lobotomized woman to make kids for custom organs for rich customizers, Dragon Age: Origins has something like that but spoilers, etc. It's a trope that's mostly been left behind by the genre for a reason, but new people seem to be exposed to it for the first time every few years.

Arcanum also had a misfortune of implementing this trope in a way that tied it into a whole slew of RL antisemitic tropes. Shadowy cabal of a physically weak nouveau riche merchants and industrialists with prominent noses resorting to something truly heinous to shield themselves from the wrath of the mob and to further their goals.
I am entirely certain that the devs didn't intend it to be read as any kind of confirmation of those vile libels, just used the workhorse ideas of major conspiracies that work and invoke the spirit of the era, and hit an unfortunate "jackpot"
Still, as a Jewish teen stumbling upon this quest made me put the game down for a while.

the people who made fallout 1 and 2 got screwed over by the publisher repeatedly and lost the rights to fallout in a hostile takeover. So they left and founded Troika, where they made some of the best games ever, AGAIN.
But that publishers ALSO screwed them. So they left and founded Obsidian. They made New Vegas. If they got New Vegas over a 90 on metacritic they would make enough money to rebuy the fallout license. New Vegas got an 89 on metacritic, and some people think that was collusion to keep it under 90.
So Bethesda kept the license, everyone who made fallout just retired from games entirely, and Obsidian has withered.

Not to go into the whole Bethesda Obsidian rivalry thing, Bethesda makes some god tier buggy engines and Obsidian only had a year to make New Vegas so yeah how can it not be a mess on the technical side. Troika Games only made 3 games over 7 years before going out of business, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, The Temple of Elemental Evil, and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. They went out of business because all of these where jank in the extreme but all became cult classics because they are some of the most engaging games out there even for current times. If this came out nowadays, we would not have this plot, it be strictly "Magic versus tech, choose the ending or go for middle and say kill everyone".
Also as for the minor note on "Cultural appropriation", its a weird idea that is mostly, if not, entirely spawned by people who claim something is offensive but really isn't, and doesn't know what the fuck they are talking about.
