But I don't see how the network would function if composed of the old non-performant client alongside the new firedancer client. Won't everyone upgrade to firedancer, and so there won't be client diversity? Surely all clients on the network have to be capable of processing the same number of transactions?

Guys, the higher the price of the token, the higher the fees. When ETH was 10 dollars, the fees were negligible, at 1000 it became a nightmare. The same goes for all layer 1 blockchains, the higher the price of the token, the more expensive it becomes for the average user. While everyone in Crypto wants the pump, extreme price increases in the token price also means the fees become more expensive. Which then makes them less suitable for mass adoption
