    Azula is a classic example of "the abused becomes the abuser," whereas Zuko is a classic example of the kid who breaks out of the cycle of abuse. They were both abused by Ozai, but where Zuko was able to break free of it, Azula became a part of it. She learned through her father that love and trust came with its own set of terms and conditions: "Do as I say, how I say it, and I will love you. But defy me, or act any less than perfect, and you will get worse than nothing." Azula saw this in how Ozai treated Zuko and behaved accordingly. And when it "worked," she applied it to her own relationships. And when that fell through, she had no one to turn to. She had alienated her friends and her family, and the one person who she thought actually loved her turned out to view her as as much of a pawn as she viewed everyone else.
    Now, this doesn't excuse her actions. She's still an abuser. She manipulated people to get her way and when they didn't do what she wanted, she punished them. But it certainly explains her actions. In the moment of her breakdown, you don't sympathize with her so much as you've come to understand her better. Everything clicks into place and you realize, "Oh shit, this is why she is the way she is." It doesn't justify her actions, she's still a reprehensible person, but you can understand now why she's like that.
    So for me, I love Azula as a villain, and certainly love her as a character. She's much more complex than she seems on the surface. But as a person, she's horrible, and she needed to be taken down one way or another.

      To be fair to Azula though, Zuko had Iroh to set him on the right path, whereas Azula had the exact opposite of him, like you said as well, in Ozai.

      That, and I think she's the accurate depiction of what it would be like growing up as the child to a cult leader. Yeah, they were really unfair to her when they said she was evil even back when she had both parents. She never had both parents. Ozai manipulated her away from Ursa as soon as he saw that she was more clever and a better bender than Zuko. Azula's conviction that her own mother hated and feared her was most likely something she came up with to explain why her mother wasn't around for her as much as she was for Zuko, when in reality it was because of Ozai's influence and pressure on Azula. It's clear from the vision she has in the mirror that Azula secretly has that uncertainty going on, where she's worried that maybe her mother DID actually love her, and that the divide between them wasn't just a matter of "My mom hated me, oh well I got over it", which is conflicting for her.

Shes definitely a supporting main role. But isnt a MAIN character like sokka or Katara, who both get a TON of development through out the series as well as aang. Hell, when appa goes missing HE gets more character development than toph did lol Does that make appa a main character? because i can promise you he's primary supporting, not a main. @@scoopstacey3112 I think she's meant to be such an icon of the element of earth - dependable, unmoving, reliable, that she doesn't have any larger series arc, she's pretty much the same at the beginning as at the end. Which might be partially why she is such a prodigy with earthbending (besides the heightened senses from her blindness). But I agree it makes it harder to see her as main character because of it. That, and because she's the only character among Aang, Sokka, Kitara, Iroh and Zuko to not be introduced in the first episode or be featured at all in the first season.
      But, I personally like to see her as a main character, just because once she's introduced, she's a vital role in the protagonists' party till the end of the series, and has so many great interactions with all the other characters throughout pretty much the rest of the series. I don't know enough about writing to know if her being without any large arc actually disqualifies her from being main, but that's just my feeling of her, and why I'd give her top billing along with those other names.

    Whenever you guys talk about Azula I am reminded of the old mans quote from Jurassic Park "I don't blame people for their mistakes, but I do ask that they pay for them." I think Zuko being favored by the mother and not Azula caused resentment that pushed her closer to her father and his ideals. I can see why Azula is how she is, but at the same time she made a choice to follow her father. There is no excusing what she does, but there is a solid reasoning for her choices in her mind.

    • @michaelhenry3234

      She didn't really have a choice. Azula didn't "choose" to be raised by her father. So, no, she isn't excused of her actions, but you can't say she chose the wrong path, because she didn't. Shit just happened to her and shaped her as a person. She's tragic like that.

    I understand where you guys are coming from with Azula, but you have to look at it like this: Being the child of royalty is difficult enough, being the prodigal son/daughter is even harder. Though Zuko was the lesser between he and his sister, he was still under a lot of pressure, imagine Azula's. Azula was, at least in the twisted eyes of the Fire Nation, the living embodiment of what they stand for and expect, she was even named after her grandfather who was Firelord at the time, Azulon. She was perfect, and she had to stay that way, she was born cruel and calculating, and had to stay that way. In the beach episode AND the final two of the series finale, this is elaborated upon. At the camp fire she relayed how she feels she's always expected to be the best, to be perfect, it's why she got aggravated at a loose hair hitting her face while she practiced lightning bending. If you're perfect you will always be expected to be as such and that's a heavy burden. She talked about how her mom favored Zuko and thought she was a monster, and Azula jokes that her mom was right but it still hurt. Her mom thought she was twisted, and her father never showed her any parental affection outside of her showcasing her skills and loyalty. I think it's safe to say he saw her less as his daughter, and more of tool, I mean he burned his son for just disrespecting a general and refusing an Agni Kai and banished him. Remember when Ozai announced that he would become the Phoenix king, and Azula freaked out thinking he just forgot about her, and at this point she already lost both of her childhood friends, so she was unstable and her former friends only reinforced what she had always believed, never trust anyone, never get attached to anyone. She wailed and whined at Ozai saying she did everything he asked and was the most loyal etc, she wanted to be appreciated, to be seen as something other than a disposable tool, and when Ozai said he wanted her to be the new Firelord, she was thrilled. But it went down hill from there and she was hallucinating and having mental breakdowns, which is the reason that Zuko stated he could win, even with the comet buffing her, she wasn't her self, everything overwhelmed her and she just broke, she had a meltdown and cried while breathing fire after Katara tied her down. Her and Zuko never really had a childhood, but Zuko at least had his mother's kindness and his Uncle's support, Azula had no one. She doesn't even know how to socialize or fit in, she scared a guy away with her first attempt at socializing by spouting authoritarian despot fantasies and goals *we'd be the most powerful couple in the world!* And she was genuinely upset when he bailed. That right there, her encounter with him, just makes it obvious that her life consisted of nothing but conditioning and training mentally and physically into what she is now. She's not supposed to be a sympathetic character, she's supposed to be a tragic one. Redemption or sympathy were never in the cards for Azula, she was a dark individual by nature, but she was nurtured to keep and maintain that nature, there was never any hope for her and that's the tragedy of it all.

      Exactly. Not sympathetic, tragic.
      The fact that they can't accept that Azula's mom failed Azula is sort of infuriating. Iroh had a very thin relationship with both kids until he returned from the war. He loved them but he was a general on the front lines. After he lost his son he returns and latches on to Zuko. At that point Azula was already to far gone but Zuko was not. He recognized that.
      I have no sympathy for Azula or her actions. But i do find her story tragic.

    People will inevitably compare Korra to Avatar, but apart from them being set in the same universe, Korra is completely different in structure, tone, and what it sets out to do. They're also explore opposing themes. ATLA is the story about a boy who never wanted to be the Avatar but was forced into it by a world that needed him, and the friends who helped him along the way. Korra is the story of a girl who had always wanted to be the Avatar struggling to find her place in a world that might not need her anymore, and how she often has to deal with that alone. I'm not saying TLOK is perfect, but it will suffer if you try to measure it by ATLA's standards because its creators wanted to do a radically different show.

    • @hyperdeath84
      @hyperdeath84 7 років тому +24

      Alex Schrank While I get that LOK is a very different show, it's completely fair to measure it against TLA - it's a direct sequel. Aliens is different to Alien but you can still compare them since it's a direct follow up. The central themes and character journeys are actually the same in both series: the overall theme of personal and worldwide balance is massively prevalent in both and each Avatar has to deal with the consequences of their past life and redefine what the role of the Avatar is for themselves before truly becoming Avatar Aang/Korra at the end of their series. They may approach things in different ways and have different secondary themes but the core is the same. Incidentally I adore LOK but do place TLA above it overall. They're both excellent though.

    • @hyperdeath84
      @hyperdeath84 7 років тому +4

      Alex Schrank Sequel doesn't mean it happens a week after the original. A sequel means a continuation of the work - most of the main TLA cast show up and have important roles or at lest have a legacy that is important. Do you not compare the Star Wars prequels to the originals because there's a significant time difference between them? That kind of thinking makes no sense to me. It's the same world with a lot of the same characters (even most of the new ones are direct descendants of TLA characters) and the same central themes. Korra's arc is even very reminiscent of Zuko's: learn some humility and define your future for yourself, not for some title or position you think you have to adhere to. LOK is the sequel to TLA, comparing them is completely valid.

    • @hyperdeath84
      @hyperdeath84 7 років тому +4

      Alex Schrank That's fair. Like I said I would use the Alien/Aliens analogy since both are great, share a common core but are very different too. I suppose I'm used to people defending Korra's perceived shortcomings by saying "stop comparing it to TLA" which is not a valid argument for me.

    • @AlexSchrank
      @AlexSchrank 7 років тому +3

      The Alien/Aliens analogy is a good one. Comparisons are obviously inevitable, and I'm not trying to defend TLOK's shortcomings, I guess what I'm trying to say is whether it's Aliens, the Star Wars prequels, Fantastic Beasts, or TLOK, a movie/TV show that sets out to be something unique should succeed or fail on its own merits.

    • @AlexSchrank
      @AlexSchrank 7 років тому +3

      I agree that it's a sequel, but I guess for me personally it's harder to judge whether or not it's 'good at being an Avatar series' than it is for some people, mainly because of the structural differences (self contained season arcs vs. overarching narrative, 12-14 episode seasons vs. 20-22 episode seasons, heavily serialized vs. lightly serialized) that don't really exist when comparing films.

It was a buildup of Ozai's wife preferring her former lover, Zuko for being more like that said lover, and Firelord Azulon seemingly to dearly love his eldest son Iroh, and more. I don't know, I wish they went back to the past of Ozai and Iroh more. I believe both, being good characters, are capable of working off each other as foils. Sorry I went off topic, hahaha back to your comment all I can say is: the more you know. :)

      Nope, I do in no way believe Ozai is a more powerful firebender then Iroh, Iroh has travelled the world, gone to the spirit world and fought in many wars compared to Ozai, Iroh has the skills, Iroh has the experience and the intelligence(he created a lightning counter, no one else has done that before!) to be way more powerful then Ozai.
      Ozai was just the spoiled brat that was just using his political knowledge and conspiracy's to get what he wanted(true, he is a powerful bender who has gone through some hard training for sure, but that pales to what Iroh has done)

      @UmarTahir 6 років тому +1

      trollswillbetrolls The quote isn't universal, I agree with that. You can't use it for any person in any situation. However, there are times in life when you want to have that mindset. It's not bad in every situation. Especially for someone who is passionate about something but is on the verge of giving up, these are inspiring words. At least, it certainly inspired me. Although it doesn't always apply, there is nothing wrong with having a focused mindset.
      Also, Iroh influenced Zuko and although Zuko struggled, he eventually did find his way. Iroh did have that influence. In Azula's case, even though Azula was only following Ozai's example, she has to be partially blamed, not completely, but partially

    I would suggest also watching the Behind the Scenes Avatar clips Nickelodeon released that explains the elements and the martial arts related to them before you do the fan video. There are different ways of doing the Earth style but the main elements of having a sturdy base is still in both Bumi and Toph's fights. I think it's more about their target while fighting. Toph aims to dismantle and trip up her opponents (more precise), Bumi aims more to take the fighter out through more brute force and misdirection (more power in each blow).

    I've had a HORRIBLE life since I was born and I still do. I'm already an adult and have been for a long time, but my life still isn't good. I've still never had a real friend and never been loved. Yet I've never hurt a person in my life, I love unconditionally and do whatever I can to make everybody happy. I don't want anybody to feel the pain I feel. I also see the best in people and want to help them to see it in themselves. I help others to value their own lives, the love themselves. Even though everybody has always hated me and put me down. My parents tried to teach me to lie from a young age and I never went along with it, because I always had my own morals, my own personality, my own ideals about what's right. And I was always more empathetic and thoughtful than my parents or any other "role model" I had in my life. I didn't have to learn this behaviour because I always was this way. I defied my parents if they asked me to do something I thought was wrong. I never once gave into peer pressure as a child or teenager. If people did something I didn't agree with, I let them know it was wrong, even if I was the only sensible person in the room. Even if everyone laughed at me or called me names, I knew I was right and they weren't very good people so their opinions of me didn't matter because I know who I am. So yeah, no matter how bad your life is, you still have a choice to be good.
    I also know some girls who grew up as part of an evil cult that kidnaps, rapes, and murders people. They were raped since they were young children, they were trained to kill, and they had friends and family killed in front of them... But they still turned into good people, even if very mentally scarred and damaged...

    The blind bandit is my favourite episode, when I was 14, I used to write down long swaths of that episode from memory. Over all, I love Toph as a character, so her introduction to the show was always going to rank high. It was a really good blend of action, comedy and plot/story progression, and I feel like we get a good sense of what Toph is like in a relatively short amount of time. There’s also that great moment when the gang is with those two bullies who make fun of Aang, Katara says “hey, I got my eye on you!” And Sokka just sort of whispers “water tribe” like he’s super cool and they leave.

    I'm sorry, did you just say Azula didn't care about Mei and Tai Li unless they were helping her? That, is obviously not true. Why do you think she went all kookoo about not being able to trust people when she was firelord? She used them yes but she also trusted them as friends and when they betrayed her that made her realize she couldn't trust anyone. We only get a couple of glimpses into Azula's past but I feel like she was definitely used by her father which is what taught her how to "love" people.
    Also, 14 may have been older symbolically back then but physically she's fuckin' fourteen! Do you remember what you were like when you were fourteen? I know was a fuckin' douche. I can't even imagine having the pressure of an entire nation relying on you while you're in that stage of your life.

    • @stewartlittle16
      @stewartlittle16 7 років тому +37

      Jerek Headrick I get what you're saying but the way I saw it was...yeah she might've cared for them to a certain extent but I believe she went crazy because in her mind it was "I've put so much fear into them they wouldn't dare betray me" and when it happened she went downhill. Like when Mei said she loved Zuko more than she feared her that's what triggered her mind to slip. And I think it was just the fact that she no longer had control of people like the hallucination of her mother said. Because fear is all that she knew.

    • @BhlackBishop
      @BhlackBishop 7 років тому +9

      Yeah but Azula never showed it at least not in the way we define “care”. She just wanted them around, we are social beings after all and she thought her friends loved and adored her but when that wasn’t the case she realized she was alone in the world. I think the only people Azula probably cares about, like enough to give a damn about are her family. Also you can’t really compare her achievements at such a young age to ours, because we weren’t raised in the middle of a 100yr war thank God…UA-cam and Clan of clans wouldn’t have been so feasible. Our ancestors weren’t so lucky I’m afraid :(

    • @opaquea2448
      @opaquea2448 7 років тому +12

      Azula's way of caring is very different from ours. In the firenations perspective she treated them much better than what would be expected. They were seated of high station, Mai got a way with quite a bit of sass (looking at Azula dirty quite a few times). They were not constantly at Azula's beck and call, they were pretty independent and having your lot thrown in with the princess no doubt kept their family high in the ranks. She treated them more like pets tbh, but in her mind that was the only way she knew to be a 'friend'. She actually humbled herself to *apologize* to Ty Lee when she made her cry- I'd say she feels some time of care for them.

    • @jennycastillo8659
      @jennycastillo8659 7 років тому +3

      Jerek Headrick Yeah I think she cared about Mai & Tylee alot they were the reason for her downfall along with her father leaving her behind while he tried to burn down the world. She even apologized to Tylee when she made her cry and tried to help Mai get her brother back. Like she brung them up twice in the finale which showed how hurt she was they would betray her. But Mai honestly got away with alot I think what made Azula get so mad at Mai was when she said she loved Zuko more than she feared her because she probably thought of her mom who favored Zuko. But like he said I don't pity her cause she did do bad things but I do get why she's the way she is.

    • @BhlackBishop
      @BhlackBishop 7 років тому +2

      +Opaque Anity Okay, but I think Tylee & Mai's parents were already favored by Firelord Azulon being generals and all, so i don't think she actually choose them she just kinda went with it, cause you know “we’re childhood friends we understand royalty we care about each other.” So I guess yeah she may care in her own way, but because of her abandonment issues she doesn't really know what that means.

  • @Wolf6119
    @Wolf6119 7 років тому +4

    Ozai already admitted that Azulon ordered him to kill Zuko as punishment for trying to oust Iroh, and that he was fully prepared to do it until Ursa intervened, offering to kill Azulon if Zuko was spared. Ozai banished her afterwards for doing "terrible, treasonous things", all of which he told Zuko all of that on the day of the Eclipse.

    I am honestly pretty hype for their reactions to The Legend of Korra. I know it's a controversial series compared to its highly praised and forever immortalized predecessor, but the 1st season is unanimously seen as spectacular and Amon as a villain will definitely interest them along with how the world evolved after Aang's era.

      General consensus was S3 was spectacular

      Lalisa T The consensus is that S3 was the best, S2 was hit or miss, and S1 was pretty good.

      Grey Scott Oh, well okay then, I agree lol
      Though I'll say that S2 wasn't that bad. It had a rocky start, but it wasn't as bad as a lot of people made it out to be.

    Not really spoilers:
    There's a canonical Avatar comic anthology called The Lost Adventures about various stories that took place during the time of the show. One of these stories talks about Fire Nation methods of finding and exterminating Air Nomads and Airbenders who had avoided the initial invasion. It was honestly kind of dark.

  • @Wolf6119

    Also, of course there were other Airbenders living outside the Air Temples when Sozin attacked. MOST Airbenders lived outside the Air Temples, travelling the world either on foot or on their Bison (that's why they're called Air NOMADS - they were nomadic), the four temples were basically just sanctuaries and holy sites that the Airbenders could reliably return to if they were wounded or tired, and they were also where the children who were too young to travel, or the elderly who were too old, were kept safe. That's why we only ever see old monks and little kids during Aang's flashbacks to the Air Temple, everyone else was out roaming the world, searching for enlightenment.
    Once the Temples were wiped out, the Fire Nation had to scour the world to hunt down the remaining Airbenders, one group at a time. They had special caves and hideouts set up to look like Air Nomad hideouts, designed to lure in the surviving Airbenders so they could ambush them and kill them; Zhao actually used one of those old caves to briefly trap Aang in one of the comics, while they were on their way to the Northern Water Tribe.

      Wolf6120 And yet, there is actually no evidence to support that theory. Aang WAS the last Airbender.

      What do you mean? The fact that most Air Nomads lived outside the Temples isn't a theory, it's established in the comics, which are canon. Also, it doesn't at all contradict with Aang being the last Airbender. The Fire Nation DID hunt down and kill every last Air Nomad in the world. It's just that they didn't all die when the Air Temples were destroyed, it just took a bit longer to hunt down the rest of them (and the Fire Nation had another 100 years after attacking the Air Temples to finish the job). k

      +NoLaughing It is supported thanks to the Lost Adventure comics, which are canon to the series. I will not spoil it as you clearly have not read them, but you should.

    1:31:59 There are lots of different responses to abuse, some people continue the cycle and become an abuser themselves, some people choose to not put anyone else through the same pain they've experienced. Trauma may be an EXPLANATION for your actions but it is not an excuse. There is always another path.

    PLEASE react to the avatar chibi eps! There's only 3 btw and they're really short
    can you also react to the book 1 trailer for the legend of korra before starting the first book/season? Do the same for the rest of the books as well!

    Animal guides are usually the original bending animal of the avatars birth element. Air bison for air, badgermole for earth, dragon for fire, but since they can't have the moon as their pet, waterbenders get stuff like dogs.
