Here's what Alex Hirsch had to say about Ford in the DVD commentary:
"Ford’s great flaw is arrogance. He believes that there are special people, and everyone else… …That human attachments are actually weaknesses. The song and dance that he’s giving Dipper here is the exact song and dance that he gave McGucket back when they were younger - ‘You and I are different. We’re better than everyone else. We have a path that no one else can understand. No one else can do this.’ It’s a very seductive idea for Dipper, but he starts to be a little insecure. He kind of can’t believe it, and he’s sort of right to be suspicious, because while Dipper is a smart kid, Ford is projecting. Ford loves Dipper because he sees someone who will tell him ‘yes’ to everything, who will never challenge him, and who will do a really insane, dangerous mission. I know there are some fans who are like ‘Oh, this is a great offer! Dipper should just become a mystery hunter for the rest of his life, not go to high school, not go to college, not be around kids his age…’ But if Dipper had taken the apprenticeship, he probably would have gone the way of McGucket - Turned into a kind of insane, paranoid hermit with no friends, and just kind of losing his mind. So, it is a seductive offer, but ultimately, Dipper needs to try to learn not to grow up too fast.”
And speaking of Ford projecting, there's also his insinuation that being "stuck" with your twin sibling for the rest of your life would be suffocating, while Stan sadly laments that not everyone can rely on their brother always being there the way Mabel can. Clearly one of them hasn't quite gotten over the events of the past as much as the other.
Once Dipper got older and he still wanted to do all those things, that'd be fine. Dipper and Mabel really did nearly fall into the same pit traps as their grunkles did.
Ford also seems to identify with Dipper so much that he doesn't see him as a distinct individual and not a mini-me - he automatically assumes that Dipper's relationship with Mabel must be as strained as the one between the two Stans.
The offer is not bad, but it's too early for Dipper to make such a change in his life. Or knew better. Plus Ford wasn't the best influence for a teen.
Love to hear and find people talking about the commentaries!
the end cred scene is so creepy with no music and just the chaos, realy tells the viewer what's to come, these last 4 will be amazing
I wish they kept it in the reaction - they edited it out
Also the fact that you can hear people screaming
Dipper and Mabel's falling out is based off of a similar incident that happened to the series' creator Alex Hirsch and his sister Ariel.
Growing up, Alex and Ariel were in their middle school's improv team. One day, Alex got a call from the high school offering them a spot on their team, which Ariel overheard. While Alex was tempted to join them, it didn't feel right to leave his sister behind. Ultimately, it worked out as the high school team feel apart as they couldn't agree on who the leader was.
P.S. According to Alex, if Dipper had warned Mabel about the rift as soon as Ford told him, Weirdmageddon wouldn't have happened. Regardless, one of the Gravity Falls comics sees Mabel taking responsibility for what she did.
Or if Ford would've told about it, it could've easily worked out
Or if Mabel wasn't a super selfish person, it wouldn't have happened either
@@xolotltolox selfish, yes, but not more than Dipper or Ford. Saving the world just happenned to allign with their interest in the paranormal. If Ford's not too proud to let Stan burn the journal, he wouldn't have been stuck in another dimension for 30 years and the rift wouldn't have the chance to form in the first place. Hiding the journals is basically begging for someone to find them and create another portal.
@@xolotltolox if ford wasn’t as selfish and egocentric to tell dipper about the rift but not to trust mabel with that information, mabel would’ve known or at least be a little suspicious. mabel has just have the worst day of her summer and bill took advantage of it, at least she didn’t know it was bill unlike dipper when he made a deal with him
@@xolotltolox Mabel isn't selfish. She was never informed about the dangers of the rift and she saw a friend asking her for a favor. If Ford hadn't been so arrogant and paranoid, if he had relied more on the help of his family, they would have been okay.
The biggest mystery left from the series
Did the aliens attract all the weirdness to Gravity Falls?
or
Did the strangeness in Gravity Falls draw the aliens there?
the episode proves its the strangeness because the prison droid cannot leave gravity falls.
@@elusive-osmium not necessarily. It could only be able to travel within a limited distance of the ship.
My guess would be the latter, given that the weirdness is referred to as a field similar to a magnetic field. As the aliens were crashing, I'm guessing their ship was "magnetized" to Gravity Falls because of the weirdness pulling it in, much like how it attracts Bill and then subsequently has a strong enough "gravity" (lol) to keep him contained there within the field.
@@ellie-angel9254 yes absolutely, however one could argue that the space ship itself is the cause of the magnetic field, and the ship just crashes here by chance and everything started to get weird after that...I think we'll never really know lol
It's a chicken and the egg situation.
Fun Fact: your question about Blendin Blanden is actually answered in the official Journal 3.
What's the answer?
@@ibraahiim9922 I'd have to go look at my copy, which I can't cause I'm not home right now, but I do know there's a letter in the journal from Blendin ad a Back to the Future 2 reference that explains everything, including what happens to him after the series.
@@ibraahiim9922 Apparently Time Baby and the other officers would bully and make fun of Blendin for losing Globnar to a couple of kids, so Bill came to him in a dream and offered to make them stop if he shook his hand and took the deal.
@@BrandonBrenlla he sure made them stop

Bill’s dream has arrived… let’s get weird!
Edit: BTW DO NOT SKIP THE THEME SONG FOR THE REMAINING EPISODES
they don't.... chill
They already finished it
Aaron responding to Calvin's "meat stick" with "hello, nice to meet you" went under-appreciated
RIGHT?! It's those little jokes that really get to me. 😂
Mabel being able to make penpals with the mailman during the 2 minutes he was at the door is a special talent. Introverts like myself, I can't imagine doing that.
That’s crazy
Oh, what, are you saying he's *not* a male man? Is that what you're trying to say? He's not male? He's.. He's not a man? Is that... Is that what you're getting at?
@Diana Cavendish i understood that reference
Introverts like myself can't imagine wanting to.
The ending of this episode gives me chills no matter how many times I see it.
ME I KNOW 😭😭😭
The code on the wall of the spaceship is just an symbol substitution for Bill's alphabet, and it does make sense (in a sci-fi sort of way)
Deciphered it reads:
Probability Drive Engine
Probeatorium
Blerg Bloth and Beyond
Used Thatens Half Price
The darkened squares do look like the symbol for 'L' and could potentially be it, but the symbols after are, as far as I'm aware, not deciphered. I, like a lot of people, assume the "L"s stand for Level, and that the unknown symbols could be numbers, which we never get a numerical symbol substitution guide, and this seems like the only place we do ever see them.
And the yellow text reads:
Specimen has escaped
Is changing forms
Likely just a reference to the Shapeshifter and possibly inferring that the shapeshifter was an alien.
i hope they see this because i would’ve never known if i didnt
I'm hoping patreon explained it for you guys, but the finale is only in 4 parts on the channel, but was originally aired in three parts. It means that the 3rd episode of the finale doesn't have any ciphers, so hoping you don't get stuck for hours trying to find something that isn't there
XD that'ed be something also 69th like woooo
you know when i rewatched this show on disney plus i was surprised there was a 21st episode in season 2 as i only remembered 3 parts but that makes sense
Eric is truly a master of key spotting. Also that Yoda edit 😂
I will miss this show... Only four episodes left
A lot of people hate on Mabel for giving away the rift and starting Weirdnageden but I think it’s more Fords fault for not telling her what it was! Also most kids would give away some random paperweight if they thought it would keep there sibling and friends with them!
I definitely agree that Mabel wasn't to blame, and that Ford is still harboring his intense mistrust of people by not telling anyone but Dipper and this is a personal flaw of his- but my counter suggestion is that ultimately, it's simply. Bill Cipher's fault for starting Weirdmageddon. Like... everyone in the Pines family is a victim here, even if they made mistakes along the way. They're all victims of Bill's manipulation.
Why would you give something you've no clue about to someone who was your enemy the last time you crossed paths?
Doesn’t matter she didn’t know! It was (in her perspective) her brother’s, and she just gave it to a guy who tried to kill her, just because he offered her what she wanted. She’s incredibly selfish and this episode makes her seem extremely codependent.
Ford is not at fault for not trusting an unstable 12yo with information so ridiculously sensitive.
She is 12. She is going through an extreme moment of emotional upheaval. Is it selfish? Sure, I'd agree with that. But it makes logical sense as a character decision based on what she just went through, and ultimately- it's important to recognize that she is being deceived. She is a victim. So is Ford. So is Dipper. So is Stan. So is everyone in this town.
I don't understand why these character attributes and flaws are often used by some to pit characters against each other, when they are the main drivers of story intrigue and plot. In my mind, there is no interesting narrative conflict without characters who have imperfections.
@@chromaticdreams618 It fitting her character and making the plot more interesting doesn’t make her likable as a person.
A deleted scene due to time constraints in Dipper & Mabel Vs. The Future was Mabel receiving a phone call from her parents telling her she couldn't bring Waddles back home with her to California. This happened before she overheard Dipper saying he would stay in Gravity Falls.
That aside while Ford likely has the best intentions for Dipper, he's also projecting his own problems onto Dipper ("And isn't it suffocating? Dipper, can you honestly tell me you never felt like you were meant for something more?"), and unfortunately his reluctance to trust his family led to Weirdmageddon happening. While yes Mabel is partly to blame for causing WG, remember that:
1. She didn't know about the rift (Ford told Dipper to tell no one about it).
2. She was an emotional wreck at the time and not thinking straight, taking Dipper's bag by mistake when she ran off into the forest.
3. Bill (being the master manipulator that he is) came to her in a form she thought she could trust and stating that the Ford gizmo he was asking for was "something small, he won't even know it's missing", taking advantage of her current state & carefully phrasing it in such a way to make her more likely to hand it over.
All in all Ford, Dipper and Mabel all share blame and made it easy for Bill (the main culprit) to get what he wanted.
Its so strange how people blamed Mabel, even though Dipper also made a deal with Bill. And unlike Mabel he already saw and knew what Bill was, at the very least Mabel was tricked and thought it was Blenden a person who they knew they could trust.
Plus, if Dipper had told her about the rift, she'd almost certainly be more suspicious of Blenden/Bill. If I was her, I'd assume my brother would tell me about something that important. She's not completely blameless, as she shouldn't be giving out someone else's things, but there is plenty of blame to go around. (I actually blame Ford the most, as he shouldn't have been so petty about no one being trustworthy and passing that belief to Dipper.)
@@normalgamergal Alex confirmed that in the commentary.
dipper is infuraating is every smart but rash dumb teenager that thinks hes beter than he is plus a figure he looks up to that just feeds his worst side by complimenting the side dipper wants to be recognized the most
and worst of all this is all happening by human flaws not even ill intentions from his uncle, mabel did not know what the hell the glass ball was
Well you can be mad at both, Mabel and dipper were equally wrong, But more people dislike Mabel than dipper
@@captainpep3 yes, you can be mad at both, one more than the other, but some people start blaming Mabel for some things that she should not be blamed for.
We're in the endgame now.
One of my favorite episodes because I always enjoy Dipper and Ford adventures, and also we get to see the parallels between the fight with the older twins before Ford got sent into the portal and the younger twins' fight about the future.
Also the end credits are just haunting and I love additional atmospheric sounds of the helicopters and screals of terror. Really plays up how high the stakes are.
We are at the EndGame folks! Eric found the key this week.
Eric: 11
Rick: 3
Calvin: 2
Aaron: 3
Eric the key hunter
I have this hunch that Eric will win this......
Mabel's mistake hits different after the Book of Bill and the theory that her and Dipper's parents might be getting a divorce
Just FYI, "Project Bluebook" was the US military's effort to collect and analyse all sightings of unidentified flying objects. Initially, it was an attempt to see whether any useful data could be teased out of comparing and analysing such reports _en masse,_ but later project leaders took it as their remit to dismiss every report as quickly as possible with the first explanation that came to hand - that's where the cliché "It's a weather balloon" for every single thing in the sky comes from. 😁
people are too hard on Mabel in this episode
she was in shock when she heard that Dipper, her brother and live long companion, was leaving her and she just needed to be alone to process it
Bill tricked her like he did with Ford Dipper and Belnden (assuming how he took over his body) and we forgave them
she had no idea what the rift was capable of
she was only the finale link in the chain of disaster leading to Weirdmagedon
I admit I was one of those people when I was younger
Mabel gets a lot of flack for this but honestly, Ford is the real architect of this failure. He completely disregards Mabel and focused all his attention on Dipper (ironically the note in the journal was something Mabel discovered). He pushes his own brother away and yet doesn’t think about what he would be denying Dipper by separating him and Mabel. Did he even call Dipper’s parents to ask if they’d be cool with one of their children not coming home? I like Ford, but he gets a bit too much of a pass sometimes
The issue is that Mabel is flacked on, because she is acting petulant and irrational. Ford, when doing wrong, isn't being annoying about it, so people are more open to giving him a pass. it really comes down to portrayal of these issues.
I mean you say that as if Ford didn’t give Dipper a choice, and we can’t really blame Fords perspective of siblings holding each other back because of his past, he’s just trying to give Dipper what was taken away from his childhood, an opportunity to do what you love.
@@Napstablooky yeah he gave him a ‘choice’ but he knows that what he’s offering is Dipper’s dream so he’s not gonna think too hard about it
Ford has no reason to trust an unstable 12 year old who constantly acts like an idiot and can’t lie.
2 years too late but 8:45 seems like an overdub where the script might have said something like “people grow apart” instead of “summer ends”. It would make more sense the way Mabel reacts and how dipper says “I didn’t mean it like that”.
In a book of gravity falls after blenden got rehire he was still being made fun of so bill used that to make a deal with him
You know, I am sometimes conflicted about the length of Gravity Falls. On one hand, I think this show would've been great with three seasons. We could've had the Ford reveal be the season 2 finale and have season 3 of Gravity Falls with Ford. Especially since the pacing of the mystery solving suddenly jumps in season 2.
But on the other hand, Gravity Falls only being season 2 thematically fits so well with summer ending/ growing up sooner than you want it to.
Yeah I feel the same way.
At the same time, Alex Hirsch almost didn't do even season 2 because of how much he was burned out after season 1, so I'm glad we got at least that.
Dude, you seriously wanted Ford to be a SEASON finale after the portal being turned on was the first season's? If that were the case Alex would've been freaking assasinated. Plus it's not like him to just invent more stuff to fill up space when he knows the series can end faster.
I think an extra long season would have been better. Maybe some 3 to 5 episode with Ford. Would have help a lot. Specially one on one adventures.
I gotta agree, ford is only in what six episodes and half of that is the finale, kind of robbed for being a main character.
Since you've started this series, THIS is the reaction I've been waiting for.
Blue Book is a reference to Project Blue Book; a US Air Force report on UFOs.
Yeah I think it's on Kindle now.
This is the first time I’m watching a reaction for these episodes since I watched them, and man, I miss watching this show without knowing what’s going to happen. Also, I wish I was as good with the ciphers 😂

People blame Mabel for Weirdmageddon and I'm like, she's just about turning 13, she was in a rough place and she wasnt told about the rift, like to her it's just some random object and she doesnt know about its cracks.
I mean it doesn’t mean it’s NOT her fault, she had no idea what she was doing and didn’t know the context so it is mitigated but if a thirteen year old kid accidentally pushed the nuclear launch button they still ended the world
Oh man, we're finally here. I have to wait three more weeks for this ending before I laugh and cry again. But holy hell, we're finally at
*"W E I R D M A G E D D O N !"*
Remember if dipper told mabel about the rift unlike what ford wanted she wouldn’t have been tricked
I mean sure but that doesn’t make giving someone you barely know something that doesn’t belong to you that you found in your siblings bag to fulfil a selfish deal any less of a dick move
@@jonasquinn7977 yes it does when she had no idea it was a doomsday device because her uncle decided himself and her twin brother were superior beings and she didn’t deserve that information even though she’s just as involved in all this madness.
@@LangkeeLongkee She’s not as involved though, she joins Dipper on his adventures but she’s just as happy not participating and outside of this exact scenario the less people who know the better
And again she’s still handing over something she stole from her brother to a relative stranger
@@jonasquinn7977 that’s not the point the point is if she knew bill wanted it she wouldn’t of handed it to anyone except dipper ford and stan
@@Mvmrobots4030 yes and she gets some leeway for that but it still doesn’t change that stealing something from your brother and just handing it over to someone you barely know just because they asked for it is not acceptable behaviour
Even if that situation had been exactly what Mabel nought it was she still would have been in the wrong
I’m not sure of every use of “droid” outside Star Wars, but long before the phones were around, the original RoboCop (1987) used “droid” in the name of ED-209 (ED = Enforcement Droid).
I mean, Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 and this season of Gravity Falls came out on Disney several years after that, so I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be trademark infringement to use the word "droid" anyway.
Actually, from what I recall it was around this time that Disney was absolutely crapping out explicit Star Wars references in basically all of their shows. Phineas and Ferb had a whole Star Wars special and a bunch of the live action sitcoms had one off episodes that were randomly Star Wars themed and had a bunch of Star Wars props and references, more or less just to flex Disney's new intellectual property toys...
I think Disney Channel even had an entire weekend dedicated to premiering Star Wars themed episodes of most of its shows, too.
And to this day the Ohineas and Ferb SW special has been the only good SW thing to come out of Disney
@@xolotltolox C3P0 and R2D2 appearing on Ant Farm, was when I knew the Star Wars brand was going to be milked bone dry to dust.
Star Wars doesn't own the word "droid". It's a very real word to refer to robots. Franchises can't copyright or trademark general language, they can only trademark specific terms as they contextually pertain to the franchise.
@@AstralBelt tell that to the Marvel side of Disney, they copyrighted Loki, an actual god that is still worshiped
I would love to see them react to all of the ciphers/cryptograms they’ve missed once this is over. They also need to react to the Cipher Hunt!
The beginning of the end. Really excited!
Bill Cipher really does keep the end of his bargain. He made a deal with Blendin in a Dream in the Future. Blendin was bullied for losing Globnar to Children, and Bill offered to make it them stop. He did eventually by Killing them in Weirdmagedon and left only him.
To everyone he made a Deal with, he kept his end of Bargain in a twisted messed up way.
A good example would be Sock Opera where he said he'd help Dipper get closer to solve the Mystery. He destroyed the Laptop, yes, but it also led them to see the McGucket Labs name in it.
When you get the finale episode watch the end credits all the way through it’ll be worth your while
You should watch Gravity falls between the pines and gravity falls one crazy summer. In Gravity falls between the pines Alex Hirsch is interviewed by time baby. One Crazy Summer: A Look Back at Gravity Falls is a documentary that goes into a deeper dive into how Gravity Falls was made and includes details about the scavenger hunt that took place after the series.
I always kinda thought they were both being selfish. Mabel for wanting Dipper to stay with her and to not follow the adventure and mystery he loves; Also refusing the reality of life and only wanting others to do what she wants. And Dipper for ignoring family and putting himself over others, and thinking higher of himself at times. But their both kids who don't know any better.
We’re finally here! The guys are NOT ready for what’s about to come.
This has become my favorite series on youtube
I miss this show I’m gonna be sad when you’re finished with it
Here we go everybody! Buckle up, it's gonna be a weird ride!
Rewatching the reactions, I feel like it's underemphasised how often Ford is just wrong about things. I know that's a big part of his overall character and arc and people have already highlighted it, but I think it bears repeating. The smartest guy in the show, definitely one of the smartest people on earth in the show, is wrong like all the time. He speaks with absolute conviction in his own beliefs and they're proven to be inaccurate constantly. The way he talks about Dipper and Mabel's relationship is the obvious one, but it goes right back into his warnings about the portal written in his own journals. "It WILL destroy the universe", but it doesn't. His entire entry about the unicorns is based on the misconception they put out there to keep humans away, he does no further digging and takes them to be as dumb as they look.
Honestly this comment is less about revealing stuff and more about just expressing my excitement for this series. Again.
I was sure that everyone like Eric would go crazy at the end of the episode but no.....well

I like how Ford tells Dipper not to tell anyone about the rift to keep it safe, which is reasonable, and we might have assumed that Dipper would let it slip and that's what would have caused shit to hit the fan but it's actually the opposite. Precisely because Mabel had no idea how important the rift was she didn't think much of giving it away.
People always say that to justify Mabels actions, and it’s true and does mitigate it somewhat, but she is also still stealing something from her brother and giving it away with no context and for entirely selfish reasons
@@jonasquinn7977 that's true, but I didn't really mean to justify her actions, more so an observation that what happened is kind of ironic. Although I do think lots of people are a bit too harsh on Mabel for making a stupid mistake while in the middle of a mental breakdown
