How New WA Gun Laws Affect You

- Paul Papalia might claim there's a firearms crisis in WA, but the real issue is our mental health crisis. The laws he and his colleagues are proposing will make things worse, rather than better. The Firearms Bill 2024 is a knee-jerk reaction, instilling fear in our community, and I for one won’t have a bar of it.

“OVERGROW THE GOVERNMENT”
It’s a worry when the police are writing laws.
It's called "Totalitarian" the reality, democracy buried 😮
Here in the US we have a law enforcement agency called the ATF and they have been pretty much making laws (or trying to anyways) that make certain things illegal and restrict our rights. Never good when unelected bureaucrats start making laws.
War criminals are
It's very concerning
ua-cam.com/users/shortsA9vyoPCYgDg?feature=shared , Totally agree waynefuller.
Not happy with the labor government and their attitudes to guns at all.
@waynefuller7220 The system in place was the idea of Hawk and Keating
Shutting down free speech and censorship will contribute to violence, not reduce it. Guns and knives do not commit crimes, people do. These laws are ineffective because, as this man says, they do not address the underlying problems. Legally held firearms are rarely the problem. Those most likely to misuse firearms are those who hold them illegally. As long as the police are focussed on arresting people for social media comments they are not on the streets. The primary function of the police is to prevent crime, not to persecute the public for thought crime. They must concentrate on those who act out violence, not on those who have opinions that insult or offend. They don’t do that by trawling through internet and social media comments.
Yes they should but surely they won't. Everything is inside out and upside down in world of sh1tshooters
In Australia we used to carry knives on our belts everywhere an over the last 30 years it’s slowly been demonised. That was culture every kid had a Swiss army knife. It’s a shame Aussie culture being destroyed
Ive lived in Australia for over 60 years and I can never remember carrying a knife. Nobody I knew did either.
Over that 60 years did anyone that did carry a pocket knife ever threaten you or attack you with it before it was made illegal and made a criminal out of anyone that had carried a pocket knife all their life.
@@zentriffid If you have never left the city then you very likely would not have come across it. I know many people who carried, not one of them ever used it offensively. As a former paramedic I carried all the while, used it to cut seat belts, cut clothing, lift pins out of door hinges to release trapped fingers etc etc. But now I am not permitted to carry. Typical knee-jerk reaction by bureaucrats who strive to get their name attached to a bill, any bill, going before parliament as evidence of their existence. And this is just the same as what piss weak Papalia is doing. Like the original weapons buy-back it is all based on mis-used statistics, lies, and distortions.
@@johnstaring3210 Same here as a former Ambo, I carried most of my career and nobody knew unless I used it at a job. Most SAR team members were issued with one.
@@zentriffid I have had Leatherman on belt for over thirty years and use numerous times a day. Must be nice to never have to fix things or get dirty.
At last we have someone who doesn’t talk in riddles
Well said sir
What is not shown is the empty seats on the government's side of the house. They have been told which way they have to vote on this bill, irrespective of their electorate's wishes. Massive accolades to Dr Walker for this very important speech and exposing the ineptitude of Papalia, and the utter dishonesty of this legislation.
Here here Dr Walker , I totally agree with your thoughts on this matter , I thought our politicians are paid to write our legislation for the people safety and fairness to all people of west Australia . What happened in Floreat to the mother and daughter was a absolute disgrace to say the least , after learning the police had been contacted 3 times to remove the man’s fire arms and many people have said exactly the same thing , with the only question being .. why didn’t the police remove the man’s fire arms ????….now we have the police writing the legislation ( seriously ?? ) . It’s now got to the point our state government is running a dictatorship for there own cause .
That's right I can just see the line of criminals handing back their firearms. What a joke.
Just another vote grab
Paul papalia needs to be stood down immediately. This behaviour is unacceptable and disgusting
Personal responsibility has gone out the window. Australia now believes every problem can be fixed with bans. What will we do when there is nothing left to ban?
“There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.” Ayn Rand
we dont want to feel safe we want our rights back and we want to be able to protect ourselves id rather live a dangerous and free life then safe and ruled and controlled
"I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery" and "Anyone who would sacrifice freedom for safety deserves neither " both Thomas Jefferson quotes
Most criminals have firearms bought on the black market not stolen
"Black Market" is synonymous with "Stolen"...
@@NautiRulz the handguns most .the bikers get caught with are not stolen they always a charged with a unlinced firearm not a posesion of a stolen firearm
@@robertfoster7807 yep , there was 6 firearms stolen from a gun safe and missing in Gero atm that's not good for the community.
@@greg9345 how many people have been killed by stolen firearms in western australia in the last 10 years none that i know off.How many people have been killed by stolen cars many..Stuff the new firearms laws in the nanny police state of western Australia
@@greg9345also you are needing a license to obtain ammo
Papalia should be sacked
The arrogance of the police minister (take it or leave it) sums up how little we matter. When you have that attitude towards your politicians. That clown has NO place in a democratic society. Then again,he has history going way back, just a little dictator 🤬🤬🤬🤬
You can only imagine what sort of an officer he was in the military. Who would have thought that someone with communist tendencies would join our military ?
One of the safest times were when you could buy air rifle slugs at the post office
The police could have taken the guns off that floret man under current law but they did not why not was it incompetence by the police or a deliberate act to further the new firearms laws because they knew some thing would happen
A lot of shady unanswered questions have gone amiss about the shooting and how the Police handled the shocking incident. If someone is a criminal and wants to commit a criminal act they will get a gun from a non legal source anyway. The social issues are not been addressed when the offending youths first commit an offence, social issues that can be exacerbated by not correcting behaviour (in a correction establishment) and or government policies. We are also not in a democracy and haven’t been in one for quite a long time. We are lead down the path of policy agendas that are bought and paid for by lobbyists and interests of corporations, definitely not for the wishes or interests of the majority. It’s all about more government control, not safety.
Great speech Dr Brian , I hope the other people in there listened.
A few things come to mind.
As a firearm owner, the current government is bearing down unnecessarily on the honest and safe firearm user for no reason.
If that's the case, how is the government going to disarm the criminals?
The police may as well have their guns taken from them aswell since the 97% of W.A's citizens don't own one.
Again, this new legislation is completely unfair to the sensible owner.
Would the Liberal party repeal this if they got into power?
I think not!
Great speech, however I would have liked you to use either "firearms or guns" rather than "weapons" I would have also liked to have broken down the stats on firearm usage with registered vs unregistered firearms/people. But at the end of the day, the arrogance of the Police Minister will ignore this like it never happened.
Hard for a society to stand up against a corrupt government and police force with no weapons..We understand!!
Great speech . The most logical argument I've heard in years.
Let’s face it, if the government were serious about “saving lives” and truely had the health and well-being of the community at heart, they would ban cigarettes and alcohol, look at the deaths and violence they cause nation wide each year, but too much money to be made.
A main issue is the fact that we the public look and see that our 'leaders' are corrupt, morally and ethically empty, and really don't care for us the people. We know they look after themselves.
When you have people in positions of power without any moral fabric, we the people lose trust, lose hope, together with overwhelming economic pressure, sooner or later people will express that frustration and anger on each other. While the perpetrators sit in ivory towers playing god.
We should be like America. Come try take there guns (100% protection). Trusts is out the window today.
What gives the cops the power to write law west australia a police state
This bloke would make a great premier. The approach to the legislation is what every politician should aspire to, not being limited to what his immediate subject is about.
Scared of toy guns weaker than airsoft too.
I reckon, the reason/s the police never confiscated that murderer's firearms before he used them as premeditated murder weapons, was because the murders weren't current events, in operation and in the moment underway, AND, if he had firearms, and didn't want to hand them over, they'd be getting shot at, and would prefer not to be on shift when that job got called up. They'd rather proactively avoid being possibly shot at. Any cops who do possess significant courage will get snaffled by the elite tactical roles. The regular cops are more commonly the kind of bloke who's lazy and moved into a career that required no significant intellect, no significant technical training (except police Admin. dept/s; Technical depts; and Elite Tactical depts mentioned), and where their govt dependency saw the govt move things behind the scenes to enable and provide things for them, which would otherwise be considered "made with unobtainium".
Around 18:00, Dr Walker is onto something critically important.
There's a serious shortage of some critically important things in society:
i) of Leadership;
ii) of Empathy (as opposed to plenty of Apathy); and of creative inspiration that isn't highly-immoral (which is easy creativity, in that it's destructive, not creative).
Well said Dr I thought it was just me who noticed that WA was being run by ex Bobbie’s who are now either police and or politicians thanks for highlighting this
A very measured, well crafted and well delivered speech. In my ideal world, your speech would be listened to by the the Government. In the real world however, I suspect that this arrogant and disconnected Government will continue down its chosen path. I applaude your commitment to take this position in the face of an obvious intent of the Government to just ignore any dissenting voices. Your speech could have been much more vitriolic but you have done very well to keep your comments very measured and accessible to anyone who chooses to listen.
No not safer firearms laws only impact the legal firearms owners and not the criminals where the problem is
It could be considered unlawful
All I can say is thanks for your voice was a great speech
Putting things in prospective total gun prevention does cause a population to have not one clue of how to use a gun. War is coming sooner than what you realise, and without that knowledge, it makes Australia more vulnerable to takeover.
Blasters are toys not no not real
One simple line, "Anyone carrying or possessing or using an unlicensed firearm for any reason will be committing an offence earning a sentence of at least 5 years and a maximum of 20 years in prison, per offence". They are too lazy to address the problem, which is not licensed shooters.
So when police can carry guns and shoot and kill without any issues. How is taking guns off law abiding people going to make the world safer. If guns are the problem then so are knives the problem. Don’t see the sale of knives being banded.
great speech
A reasonable person in wa politics thanks mate
An immigrant lecturing Australia on guns , but yet they don't mind being protected by armed guard's and police.

@@Sydneywizard immigrants built and fought for this country !!!
With reference to police the standards of the intake has been lowered , the training standard has definitively dropped and the diversity of some officers as seen on uploaded videos where as an example an Indian policeman was rude and aggressive attitude when trying to serve a summons and in fact ended by showing his middle finger with a Senior police officer present and not saying anything
Have my licence for 46 years own 2 low power fireams.
Now my guns maybe taken away through no fault of myself because the Police never did their job properly.
Reasoned. Wise. Listening to the Doctor’s speeches I’m reminded of pockets of sanity and ignorance of evidence.
Why on earth are the police allowed to make the laws.
Prohibition has never and will never work i would have thought the jelly backs would have worked that out buy now.
Consultation is confused with AGREEMENT.
Cambridge Dictionary
"the process of discussing something with someone in order to get their advice or opinion about it"
No where does the definition include agreement. Management types and Politicians miss represent the facts by saying "we have agreement with the stake holders (firearm community) because we have consulted them.
The Police Commissioner's opinion should not carry more weight than the statistics. If you abide by the law you should not be consistently harassed to the point of giving up your hobby because it becomes to costly or onerous to comply with legislation.
The Police Commissioner should get his own back yard in order in stead of harassing the citizens their supposed to SERVE.
Case in point, failure to assist a women and her daughter when told about husbands threatening behavior due to a brain tumor, they still didn't remove the guns. No one in the firearms community would disagree with his guns being removed in those circumstances.
Senior Police member who shot himself in a police facility! The Police psychological process and controls didn't help him so requiring the general public to under go psychological assessment is pointless and unnecessary.

@desjustdes939 The SSAA have backed the National Firearms Agreement from day one along with other groups of Fudds all are absolutely useless and would only wake up if a complete gun ban was put into place.
