That moment when you're watching an old episode of Star Trek NG and the next thing you know, you're watching a beautiful performance of classical music on UA-cam. :D
I've listened to classical music my whole life, but it took a Star Trek episode to lead me here. What a beautiful piece of music and wonderful performance.
If I did not have an understanding and emotional investment into the life of Sarek over the past 40+ years, this music probably would not move me the way it does today. It is not just the melody that invokes feeling, but the understanding that this song represents the ending of a journey of someone that has been part of our lives for so many years.
I've never really listened to classical music, but I've always had a kind of distant appreciation for it. Like others, Star Trek brought me here and this performance absolutely blew me away. I never really experienced classical music in an emotional way, but these performances touched me. It really opened me up to hundreds of years of music I might not have explored otherwise. Thank you so much for posting this amazing video!!
We can't tell you how much we love this, Dane. Thank you for listening. There's lots more great music on our UA-cam page and website (israelichamberproject.org), so please feel free to explore and let us know what you think. We'd love know to know which composers you gravitate towards.
I'm a violist and I had to play this peice for a Music scholarship exam for a future school. In the build up I listened to this and it gave me a real sense of the phrasing of the music and what kind of emotion went into it. I did my exam and I got the Scholarship, so thank you so much for this recording, it's fantastic!!!
Incredible composition. This Israeli group's performance is as intense and beautiful as it gets. Also thanks to Star Trek for opening up this and other classical music to a generation who may have otherwise missed it.
Searched years under Mozart and finally found it. It is such a soul satisfying peace especially the principal violinist's interpretation. It had to be Brahms. Thank You.
Magnificent. A work so rarely heard outside of Music Schools and Conservatories. One of the iconic early Brahms works. To me, it proceeds with the majesty of a 17th Century Passacaglia at one of the European courts. Bach himself would have understood and loved this work. Bravo for a marvelous performance.
If anything on this tiny planet has any cosmic significance, it it the oeuvre of Johannes Brahms ! From Serenade # 1 to the last note of the last symphony, everything that can be said about being human - without a word.
Amazon Music brought me here, Romantic-Era Classical playlist while I'm working...this one caught my attention because it was so moving. Loving all the Star Trek comments!
Bravo! As a longtime fan of this piece (from the film "Les Amants") I enjoyed this performance very much. Every note was played with tender loving care. I especially liked the 1st violin (white shirt). Beautiful music, great performance.
I love how many Star Trek references there are in the comments. I love classical music and couldn't get this tune out of my head this week. I didn't know the name of the piece but remembered that it was played during the STTNG episode during Data's recital and made Sarek cry. Hence that lead me here. What a wonderful rendition. Fantastic musicians 👏😊
If any of you musicians read this, I"ve listenend to this single pieces of wonderful music since late 2013. You've done a great service to him. Thank you for the countless hours.
I was answering a question on Quora, "How do you make a Vulcan cry?" and needed a supporting clip. Actually, my first answer was, "Have you tried Andorian pepper spray?". This is not what I usually think of when I imagine J. Brahms' music, my first thought goes to gratuitous over-orchestration, but this is wonderfully minimal.
Me too, just after seeing this good episode Today, also 20 years ago, my brother died, in an April, 23. Sorry my poor English Best wishes to all Trekkies/Trekkers Long life and prosper, here from Sao Paulo, Brazil
🙋🏾♀️ ME! I’m watching the episode right now (“Star Trek: The Next Generation” S3, E23: “Sarek” for those who are curious & reading this) for the first time because all the streaming services have everything Star Trek available so I’m making the long trek through all the tv shows & films.
This one of the greatest of slow movements with an air of sadness and dignity scarcely matched, and here played wonderfully. I'll have to follow these musicians! (I had the pleasure of hearing the Boston Artists Ensemble play this sextet a couple of weeks ago -- and I hope that their performance will also show up on soon on UA-cam.)
I was thinking I was dead at my funeral since I had a fever fueled dream while watching Star Trek NG. Of course, being a musician, I had to know what it was. Brahms was such an underrated composer. Wagner hated him, and the two would spar while writing reviews of each others music. There is so much to learn about composers, and this music period is my favorite.
This may be a naive question ... but since they are apparently playing "off-score," what is the point of having sheet music on the stands, since no one has ever flipped a page?
They only have their own parts on the sheet, not the entire score. The entire movement fits on two pages, so they don't have to flip pages. Unlike amateurs, professional musicians don't read music by constantly looking at the sheet. They can process several bars at a single glimpse, just like you can read an entire word without looking at its individual letters.
Star Trek bought me here. Thank you Star Trek…it’s because of Star Trek that I read Dickens, Mark Twain, developed a love for classical music, and even lead me to Jesus and religion. I owe Star Trek a lot.
I know this is a beautiful piece and all but can we have some time to appreciate The guy on the far left of the String sextet. He looks like Alfredo Linguini from Ratatouille. XD I'm dyinggggg Pause at 1:51 Otherwise this is a very beautiful piece and i loved watching it.
quality-wise its top notch, interpretation as well,but...its too extraverted, its HIS passion written in notes,in my opinion-this is more pasaccaglia da chiesa style rather than da camera, more restrained approach is adwised. Just my humble opinion.

Poor Sarek, the only song to make a Vulcan cry.
Sarek cried only because the rest in attendance thought they were listening to mozart ^^

Mark Messer. We love this piece! And that slow movement is indeed majestic. Thanks for the warm words.
This is what "stately" means.
