    The story I got told when I was living in Japan was that the flush sound effect was a water saving measure. Apparently young ladies disliked the tinkling sound that accompanied urination, and would flush repeatedly while so doing to mask it, to the point of considerable water wastage. It was apparently easier to add a button that makes the noise than to persuade people to stop doing it.
    That being said, I saw very few of them through an extended stay, and quietly suspect that their main purpose these days is to confuse westerners in hotels.

      @Crusader1089 8 років тому

      Some toilets will let you play custom noises instead of the flushing, such as music or applause.

    My parents did that: they travelled all over Europe for some weeks, while I still was under construction, then later told me about the awesome time they had. They'd argue I had technically visited every place they'd been to, so it was an awesome (and cheaper) journey for me too. Of course, I -technically- love them for it.

    You know, this just reinforces for me that my pledge to LRR on patreon is worth it. The only thing keeping them from producing oodles of stuff like this is their lack of extra editors. Every dollar feels like pays back a ton.

    Thank you very much for sharing this. At some point I would like to travel to Japan, probably with my family. It's a little unnerving in for me that I have forgotten all of the Japanese I learned from classes in college (though I don't think I studied as long as Kathleen). They were very good courses too. It was a great immersion class, but I couldn't handle the workload in addition to my degree (I was taking Japanese "for fun"). There's a reason those classes are marked as 6 credit courses. Yeesh. I very much look forward to seeing more of your videos and hope that maybe it can give me a peek into what I might expect and thereby perhaps ease my nerves a little and actually work up the courage to go.
    And yeah, octopi are wicked smart.

  • @MysidianRydia

    "That's just brilliant, that is." -- I had absolutely the same reaction while I was in Japan earlier this year. Everything is just so well thought out. I got ice cream from a vending machine and was like "how to eat..?" then noticed that the spoon is actually part of the lid. Brilliant. Also: Takkyubin (or TA-Q-Bin), which delivers your luggage *for you* to your next hotel / ryokan so you can easily ride the trains from place to place. Brilliant. Vending machines giving you caffeine at every corner. Brilliant. IC Cards (Suica, Pasmo, Icoca, etc.) you can load with money to easily travel the metro / buses that don't take the Japan Rail Pass. The only thing that wasn't as convenient was that a lot of places don't take credit card, you have to use cash (yen) -- BUT you COULD use your IC card in a lot of those places and a lot of the vending machines took IC Card too. Also, there were a plentiful amount of 7-11s which have ATMs that will take international debit cards so I never had a problem withdrawing. Went during cherry blossom season to Tokyo, Mitaka, Takayama, Kyoto, Nara, Koyasan, Osaka, Miyajima, Hiroshima, Yakushima, and unscheduled stop in Fukuoka. Absolutely gorgeous country (Koyasan and Yakushima were the highlights of the trip), lovely food, streets so clean you can eat off of them, and nonexistent crime.

      Back in 2004 - because of the Iraq War - there was such a strong hatred towards Americans in parts of Europe, that *a lot* of American tourists actually *pretended* to be Australians or Canadians.
      Of course, that time is long past now, but making people notice that you're *not* American might still be useful in some parts of the world.

    Really want to go back to Japan. Survived in Tokyo for a semester with 3 phrases: Café Mocha kudasai (please), Arigatou gozaimasu (formal thanks) and Sumimasen (Excuse Me). Excuse me can get you pretty far :)

    my Internet is bad so the vid stopped at 0:14 for a bit. the face Kathleen has a "Lizardman yelling 'My Skin flesh burns!' when talking about its human costume on a hot summer's day" sorta feel to it. that or I'm just tired.

    It's always funny seeing people who are only sort of familiar with japan go exploring, haha.

    My parents also took me to Japan when my mother was pregnant with me. I feel for Penelope.

    I really want to go to Japan eventually, but unfortunately I have Coeliacs. Is there much in the way of gluten-free in Japan or will I have to just starve?

      Japan is really big on fish and rice, which means you should actually have a relatively easy time of it.
      That being said, you should probably memorize the Japanese for "I'm allergic to wheat" and/or "I'm allergic to gluten" and/or "I have Celiac Disease" plus "does this have gluten in it?" and repeat it when you go to restaurants, just to be doubly sure.
      Also, Google points me to this site, which seems helpful: www.legalnomads.com/gluten-free/japan
