Fly Fishing For River Smallmouth Bass!

- The time has finally come... I actually busted out the fly rod and decided to pursue the elusive Smallmouth Bass while wet wading a river. So many of you have asked me to fly fish and I guess I was just too lazy/intimidated to get the rod out. Well... I am glad I did!
See me fish this river with my BFS Gear: • This Lure Is Like A Ne...
I started out with a streamer but quickly changed due to lack of confidence. I tried a popper... No luck! Thankfully my childhood buddy Kyle hooked me up with some Clouser Minnows a few weeks ago. This is ultimately what did it for me!

You’re very welcome. My father’s side of the family is from Arkansas, which is how I managed to learn about the great fishing there. 😇
hell yeah! been excited as hell for this video! just seeing your confidence improve through the video, AWESOME.
also, editing and choice of tunes, TOP. love that lofi vibe
Thanks homie, glad you enjoyed the video! I had a ton of fun making it :)
Such an awesome video! Just found your channel, definitely going to watch more.
I fly fish mostly (still terrible but it’s fun) and have some tips if you want.
For streamers, it’s best to switch up your retrieve, and especially for smallies throw some pauses in there. You can also dead drift streamers, sounds stupid but it works!
Main thing is to vary your strips once you’ve found a depth that works. I’d love to send you some flies that work for me if you want!
Thank you for watching! I definitely need to fly fish more. It is always a good time.
I just got the synch fly combo from cabelas 159.99 msrp people payed that for years then 4 years ago it was 99 bucks and now its on sale for 59.99$ what a steal. Im in texas my river only has spotted and Guadalupe bass. So I'm lucky enough to go behind my house and fish a river with fish native to Texas. The fishery had alot of hybridization and few full guads...5 years ago they put 100,000 full bread guads and there back up in population. The native state fish in my local river super hard to find...situation made for fly fishing in texas.
Can't go wrong with a clouser! An OG fly
I fell in love with that fly! It flat out works :)
That's awesome bud. I have caught large mouth and catfish on the fly using wooly bugger
A catfish on the fly has to be insane haha
@@FishAnything Yea buddy I was using a 5WT so it felt huge LOL
Great video man waited along time for this how's the feeling on the fly rod catching bass 😀💯🤝🎣🕺😁🇿🇦
It was super fun! Can't wait to get out and do it again :)
More fly videos in these small rivers/creeks!
Definitely! I had a blast with it. Can't wait to use it more :)
Let’s see more fly fishing.
I have been trying to do so but every time I do, I feel like I just tangle trees XD I will soon hopefully!
I ned rig because of your past videos. Guess I need to learn to fly fish now. Great vid!
Haha love it man! Ned Rig 4 Life buddy :)
I don’t always comment but I’m always watching 🤙🏽
Thanks my friend :) I appreciate you!
No thank you for taking us along with you brotha🤘🏽
Someone told me once that fly fishing is like driving manual; it’s more difficult, but you feel more connected to what you’re doing. This looked like a bomb time. Smallmouth are definitely on my fly fishing hitlist, but they’re harder to find where I live in CA. Rad video, dude!
Thanks G! I am glad you enjoyed it. And I like that comparison - fly fishing really is a neat way to pursue any fish. Can't wait to do it again!
Wait for that 4lb smallie and you'll be hooked. I find anything olive green seems to do well with smallmouth especially zuddlers and wooly buggers
Will definitely try some of those! If I get a 4lb smallie, I will definitely go nuts XD
Why don’t you use your reel so those fish don’t get caught up in your line heading downstream? Nice Vid, nice river.
I had so much line out that if I would have reeled the slack, I would have given the fish too much slack line and it would likely get off. Easier to just pull them in.
What fly combo are you using?
Also amazing scenery and great fish!
Thank you Jacob! Honestly it is an old cheap cabelas combo - 5wt
Read my mind. I’m recently getting heavy into small mouth on the fly. And god willing a musky on the fly
That would be soooooo badass to catch a Muskie on the fly. Good luck Travis!

Kelly Galloup is my Jesus
@@SamHanson-gm3dy Can confirm that the one true jesus is Kelly Galloup. Verily he is our lord and saviour. Hallelujah and stuff.
You’re getting the fever!!!!
Nobody’s thinking you’re an idiot, lol, we all miss strikes. If you convince one person to pick up a fly rod, you’re a success.
Thanks for the kind words!!
No Sir, you’re NOT AN IDIOT!! I’ve been fly fishing for over 30 years, and you’re doing an outstanding job. BTW, I like Arkansas 2. Lots of great fish to be caught there. 😇
Thank you!!
What a beautiful, wadeable little river. You've got me thinking about digging out my long-dormant fly rod, which I kind of gave up on because of the uniform dinkiness of the bass I caught on it. Bigger bass do seem harder to come by when you're wielding the whippy stick. Not that dinks are bad, Mr. Dinkmeister, no sir.
Haha love it Jim! Yeah I definitely want to use the fly rod more often in the future. I need to stop being lazy and use it more often :D
Strip set a popper. It will force you to wait long enough to set the hook. Don't lift the rod unti you've felt the fish pull back. You don't realize it, but that was the way you were setting the hook with the streamer...you felt, not saw, the fish take. That's how to do it.
Awesome, thanks so much for the advice!
You can add a little chartreuse by adding a tiny 1 1/2" twister onto your Clouser Minnow hook. Absolutely love your river fishing videos!!! The Fly Guy!!!🤜🤛
Haha love it Michael! And that is a good idea, I will keep that in mind :)
4:38 Come down here and catch one :D The Chattahoochee runs right through Atlanta. Some nice urban fishing here.
That would be epic!
You rocked the fly rod buddy! And you rocked those smallies. I've been wanting to get out so bad with my fly rod for smallies but the rivers are just running so low because of serious lack of rain. Clouser minnow for LIFE! 🐁
Hang in there Fitzy! Once the water comes back down, I expect to see some smallie beatdown videos!
This looks so damn fun
Come take my fly rod anytime. It isn't being used lol
Probably one of my most favorite videos. Looks like you had a blast! You did great with your casting and working the fly 👍. Wish we had closer smallmouth spots haha. We do have redeye though. They are probably my favorite local species to catch. Can't wait to see what you do with your fly gear next 😁👍
Thanks Mark! I definitely had a lot of fun with this video :) can't wait to chase more fishies on the fly!
Love it man, looks like a blast. I gotta dust off my fly rod sometime soon!
Tyler buddy, go get married, then lets wade this dang river! :)
Awesome man we are just finishing lunch at the lake watching your video lol. Loved it dude it's always fun to watch you get at em especially when you're interrupted with a bite that makes you gasp 🤣 thanks man the wife and I are about to get back at it ourselves.
Hope you had a wonderful trip! Thanks buddy!
What's popping?????
:) what's poppin' JP!
@@FishAnything a hula popper!!! What's what!
this creek is absolutely beautiful to look at also never seen fly fishing before looks really difficult lol😂
Fly fishing is weird. Fun, but weird haha
Great video man! I have a fly setup I bought last year and have still yet to use it.
GO USE IT MICAH! I bet you would smoke big carp on it :)
‘Little chungus!’ Lol. Tenkara next!
Maybe one of these days!
Love the video glad to see you're on the fly rod!👍👍
I had a feeling you might like this one :)
@@FishAnything your feeling was correct sir! 👍 keep 'em comin'
Awesome vid Ethan! Was wondering why when I watch fly fishing videos no one seems to use the reel when pulling fish in
Generally you only use the reel on big fish because its a 1 to 1 ratio making it impractical to crank all your slack line in or let a dink play it out so you can use the reel
^ what he said! And I had so much line out when I got the fish to bite that it would have been so much more work to try to reel all the slack and the fish in. If I would have found a 2+ lb smalljaw, I probably would have reeled it in.

YEEEEE :)
finnnnnnnalllyyyyyyy
Haha glad this video made you happy :)
I love all smallies, they're all fun no matter the size, and speaking of different types, I've seen red-eyed smallies and there's a section of the Susquehanna here where the smallies sometimes even have minty-colored cheeks!
@7:46 ooh, I advise against that dude, I always try to release them away from where they come from cause smallies tend to be pack hunters and the fish could go right back and influence the others from it's shock to shut down and turn off. this is my experience with them anyway.
Thanks PF! I appreciate the tip. And yeah smallies are the best fish for sure :)
