- It was a long way to go from New Zealand to Ascension Island to nearly get eaten by sharks! In this video, shooting a small yellowfin tuna with a pole spear got out of control when 2 galapagos sharks tried to steal the catch.

This dude is clearly amateur. This is the point where his look-out should have intervened with a boat or jetsk. You don't spear without a team. Safety first. Spearman are usually the fatal attacks. All provoked, either by chumming, or the actual spearing of their fish.

If this wasn't recorded, I never would have believed it. Imagine telling someone you fought off two sharks all because you wouldn't let go of the tuna. It sounds like a comedy premise, yet here we are.
Also interesting, there was another HUGE hazard present. With the way the fish was swimming, he diver seems to have gotten wrapped up in some line (or he certainly could have). That will easily kill you if it constricts your movement and holds you underwater. Even with a knife, you might not be able to free yourself.

To be fair, after he knifed them in the head, they clearly were put off by that and unlikely to try anything again. He's probably learned to expect certain responses from sharks. Plus the whole reason he fought so hard in the first place WHILE holding onto the tuna (instead of giving it up) is because that catch took hard work and makes him serious money. His priority was the job, the whole time.
The blood is what attracts them too. Probably too late, but getting what they viewed as the meal out if the water and stopping the blood could make them lose interest.

Some consider not giving up the fish in this situation to be selfish and dangerous, but the truth is it is very, very SELFLESS. By giving the shark the tuna, it sets a dangerous precedent that “human/diver = free food”. That is not only super dangerous for the next person to come along, but for the sharks as well. By fighting them and keeping the fish, hopefully the sharks now realize that “human = fight” and have a lower chance of trying this again.

I'm here on Ascension right now and the sharks are absolutely insane! It's damned near impossible to land a decent sized fish before a shark takes it and your lure with it! This is especially true when trolling. I know people that Spearfish here, they always wear an electronic shark repellent device, and they always encounter sharks! Typical day of trolling, the range rider boat went out for 4 hrs, they had 14 strikes, they landed two tuna, they lost 9 lures and 3 fish to sharks. At $20-$75 per lure! I lost $400 worth of lures my first month here. When fishing from shore you typically get about 10 min of fishing before the sharks show up in force and shut it down. They are a serious PITA!
