I have two Piaget with same movement. Oscillating mass is made of 24 carats gold, not due to luxury but due to pure gold density is higher than steel, therefore you may create a smaller micro rotor with same mechanical efficiency that a bigger one. Marvellous watch and dial also made of gold !!!

Platinum is denser than either. So, yes the gold is there for mechanical advantage, it’s also very much an aesthetic choice and a hallmark of luxury.
