I’m not exaggerating when I say that TCM raised me. I miss watching that channel all day long as a kid.

I recently read Debbie Reynolds was so distracted, she ran into an adjoining room, hid under a piano and cried.. Fred Astaire walked in asked her why was she crying.. She told the story, and he taught her the parts of the routine she couldn't master.. Don't know if it's true, but what a cool story…

Yeah, it's true. They talked about it on TCM. Great story

It's worse than that. Gene Kelly's treatment of Debbie Reynolds was brutally demanding during rehearsals. Debbie's toes and feet were bleeding from endless dance practice to perfect the choreography. Meanwhile, Chris Columbus fails to acknowledge these facts, and he smiles while describing his love of this "freespirted" movie. Yes, it's an excellent film. But if you're going to acknowledge Debbie Reynolds' performance, then please share the truth about the merciless misogyny doled out by Gene Kelly.

@@annajacob7981 I understand why Chris did not elaborate.. Not the time or place for such honesty.. I have watched that film for decades without that knowledge.. Once you know it, in such detail, it really changes your opinion of Gene and the movie.. Now that I know, and have watched that iconic scene hundreds of times, all I see is her bleeding feet..not necessary here..he’s picking his favorites, not picking them apart.. it's an incredible film.. Why ruin it because Gene was such an ass..they are both gone, and while it was a terrible experience for her, it also made her a star and Hollywood darling..there are some truths not important to share..

@@edreid7872 I understand your POV. It makes sense that Chris Columbus' film appreciation video may not have been the appropriate venue to describe in detail the physical and emotional horror Debbie Reynolds endured. However, his positive shading of such an iconic film scene serves to bury the truth. I imagine a very small percentage of people know anything about the real Gene Kelly. Continuing to adore false images of celebrity men (and women, when appropriate) who deeply disrespected and ab*sed their colleagues (and, potentially, friends and family) only excuses and validates ab*sive behavior. Columbus could have alluded to the "extreme pressures and other circumstances" that Reynolds experienced while rehearsing and making this movie. This more accurate portrayal of what the mood was really like on set means those interested in learning more could comment and post questions, or simply perform the Google search to learn the facts. I believe this because, imho, whitewashing the truth is never the best policy.

The Quiet Man is a fantastic classic! Great pick from Chris Columbus.

Yes, "Duel" is the film that features a Plymouth Valiant in a starring role and that alone makes it worthy of high praise. 🤩

Wow wow wow. I've never cared for CC's films all that much, but what a mensch, what great taste and great analyses of the pics he chose. I've got to re-watch The Quiet Man now -- it always bored me to death when I was a callow youth, but Christ, Mom & Dad got all icky whenever Ch. 9 showed it- I won't rewatch Brian's Song but remember how it tore me up way back when. Thanks, CC!

My granddaughter at age four grabbed her little bumblebee umbrella and danced along with Gene Kelly while we were watching on TCM. So glad I grabbed a photo of that.
As for Brian's Song, this TV movie was later released in theatres there was such word of mouth about it.

You picked some of my all-time favorite movies Mr. Columbus. Singing in the Rain is so perfect. The Apartment is unforgettable (a family friend Johnny Seven was in the movie as Shirley's brother-in-law, he had some great stories to tell, especially about the scene where he punches out Jack Lemmon.) The Quiet Man is the best movie John Wayne ever made. Thank you for giving me a David Lean movie I have never seen; I will definitely watch Great Expectations.

Well, The Apartment is my all time favorite, so big agreement with these choices. Oh man, his fellow CC director Cameron Crowe will be so jealous Chris picked The Apartment before he got the chance too, a huge influence on Crowe’s works.

If anyone is looking for a different Irish film other than the Quiet Man, I'd suggest Odd Man Out (1947). A botched robbery means the police are after an IRA man, who now has to work his way across Dublin without getting shot. The characters he meets really make this film and it's a classic for St. Pats. ☘️

😅What about the neglected Lewis milestones great anti war film All Quite in the Western Front. Lew Ayres gives à strong performance in the film He was oñe of the most underrated actors.
TCM did not offer any commentary on the film.
all Quiet in the Western Front is one of the best films of the 1930s.
