It’s impressive how much pump staff spinning puts into the arms, back, and shoulders, especially when the speed picks up. I was surprised how effective a 1 pound stick can be. It’s sort of like walking with the upper body when you get into a rhythm. Spinning can be used for one type of self defense: animal defense. In my area, I use fast spins while walking to make animals hesitant to approach or avoidant. A crowd of hissing geese clear a path, unleashed dogs stay at a distance, and mountain lions, coyotes, and bears don’t usually like a spinning target with a 5 foot radius. If you drop the staff or knock it into something it’s even more effective at spooking animals. And if none of that works, you have a cudgel that lets you land hard hits outside of biting range. You don’t need to kill an animal to escape a mauling. Just be more trouble than it’s worth to attack and keep the stick between you and the threat. Lots of parallels between animal and knife defense. If something can cut you, make a barrier.
Hi Matt did you make a video on how to use a chain for self defense yet. Thank you for your inspiration work. And great teaching style. I get up in the morning and train with you. Blessing to you and your family. David from UK.

I like the way you think Rez!
Great as always! Thanks! I'd like to see how to do some rolls across the neck or waist sometime. :)
