Well at least your ancestor was on the right side of the War Between the States. My direct ancestors fought for Texas in The War Between the States. I can't abide with revisionist historians or SJW's. I don't believe in slavery, and a person of our time can't judge anyone of our time or other eras. DEO VINDICE. At any rate, a man with Robert's extensive experience with old cemeteries and graves is well aware of the vulnerability these sites face without you causing worry for him or those that follow Sidestep Adventures. I'm sure, on your recommendation, he'll immediately go out and put security cameras in place ON SOMEONE ELSE'S PROPERTY, so he can spend time monitoring it. And what would you expect he could do about it if he did see an act of vandalism? Unless the perpetrator shows an ID to the camera, he wouldn't know who it was. And unless he lived within a couple of miles, he wouldn't be able to intervene. So stop spreading your negativity and doomsday suppositions around in the name of concern. Great video, I was very fortunate that I knew my Great Grandfather who lived to be 106 years old. He was a child during the civil war, He used to tell me so many stories about the war and his memory was sharp as a tack till the day he died. One interesting detail, he told me 100's of stories about things that happened during the civil war , but he NEVER referred to it as the civil war, or even the war between the states. When he spoke of it, he ALWAYS called it the "War of Northern Aggression". Thought you might find that of interest. Keep up the Great work!

I think your grand pappy, would appreciate it if you and the friends that accompany you looking for other old cemetery's and finding them in disarray, would appreciate it if you could come on back and clean those dead tree's that have fallen over their graves. And cut back the weeds around them. And maybe put up a log fence if you can't afford to put up a fence around the circle of those trees. Am sure there is a 3rd grave but who can tell with all that debris all over the place. As for the houses, to bad the loggers knocked them down. The beginning of your video was beautiful with all the flowers, tall grass and abandon old homes.
My mom took us all through Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi looking for old family homes, family cemeteries, and big cemeteries from the time we were small kids up through high school. Watching your channel brings back memories of walking through the graveyards and checking out all of the names and dates
Excellent episode. That was one of my favorites. What's cool is that you are establishing a visual record for your grandkids and great grandkids to reference when they go looking for these places.
Robert, I could tell you were overwhelmed as you sat next to Shady's tombstone. That says a lot about your character as a man. I hope you will do more digging, I think shady would want you to know him.
Hi. Michigan woman here, I really enjoy your touching videos.especially this one. I too went to graveyards as a child with my parents and can proudly show my grandkids where their GREAT GREAT GREAT grandparents are buried. They were my great grandparents but I remember her well. He passed before I was born and she passed when I was 14. The cemetery they are in is well kept and the grass always mowed. She was a short French lady who spoke no English although her husband did. She was warm loving and a very good cook She was a housewife and pippi worked at the shipyards in Bay City. Their house is still being lived in. Memories of that sweet lady will never fade. Keep up the good work you are a jewel. Much luv and respect sent your way.💖💕🐂🍓.

Thanks for sharing your GGGGrandfathers grave with us. It is amazing and sad about how things change so quickly. My Grandparents old stone house is gone. Years back the new owners decided they wanted a new house and the old mid18th century house was destroyed. But I also know where and visit my GGGGrandparents graves about 10 miles from where I live. They were born in Ireland and in fact,I have bother their photos from the late 1850s. He was born in 1772, came here through Philadelphia in 1815. My own Grandfather, born in 1892, knew an old man who's father was a Revolutionary war vet. His Grandfather was in the Civil War. Have his picture too. It's all so very interesting and it makes us realize just how short our time is here and how one or two hundred years isn't that much at all! Thanks Kindly and Good Health and Great Adventures! Man, I love this. When I was a kid, my Dad would take us through old houses in Virginia owned by ancestors. One had 3 of them buried on the property next to the paved road. I am very sentimental and always have been. There was a house like this one ,same scenario. I went through it as a kid and they knocked it down and cleared the woods around it. I actually thought that's where you were in the beginning of the video. Thanks for the great video
My G-Grandfather X 6 was the founder of Lynchburg, VA. I look forward to visiting and meeting a cousin(a) that I found through a FB Group Memher shop. We've become rather close in terms of realized like traits. Genetics is so amazing. I've been through VA, but not to Lynchburg.

No dragging. Would need to be carefully dug out, raised up, and very very delicately winched onto a flat trailer. They have solid frames from the factory, but you do not want to cause so much stress on the body that it tears in half.
A truly special piece of history, Robert. What got to me was the way you put your hand on Shadey's headstone and kept it there, like an old friend. He would've been proud of his grandson. I should, he probably *is*. Please tell us more about this special place someday, brother.
It's so wonderful that you can still visit Shady's grave. When you talked about him being senile and damning the Yankees it reminded me of a great Uncle who got caught in Europe when WWII broke out. Because he was a Canadian citizen he was held in a concentration camp for the duration of the war. He, too, became senile in his old age and relived his time spent in the concentration camp. It's very sad that some of us as we age relive the worst times in our lives.
Rob that was exceptional, I must thank you for sharing your family history here. The concept that you are there at your great great great grandfathers grave is really amazing to me. I could not help thinking how incredible it was for your mom to actually talk to someone who actually knew Shady. What are the chances of that!!! Crazy how so many civil war soldiers suffered from ptsd. This country has gone through so many changes and times when you step back and look at it is amazing how far we’ve come, we’ve learned and are still learning.
PTSD used to known as "shell shocked". I had an uncle that was a tank driver in WW2, back then there was no tour of duty, you were there until the end of the war or until you couldn't serve anymore. My uncle was the lone survivor of two tanks being destroyed, after he healed from the second they were going to put him in another to drive, long story short, he was discharged on a section 8 "shell shocked". All his family had strict orders from my aunt to never, ever ask him about his service.
It becomes personal when family is involved. Trying to bring back memories that we were too young to understand, and now trying to make sense of them. Of the billions or more lives lived over the ages, no one can recount them all, except God who created every spirit.
Robert, this video popped up from two years ago. I somehow missed it. I know the emotions that you felt seeing this part of your past. I recently located my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th great grandparents cemeteries in Southern Alabama. Emotions ran high as we cleaned their headstones. ♥♥♥
in 2009 I went to western Pa. to find the grave of my G G G G G Grandfather. John Jamison, born in Cavan,Ire of Scot decent. He served in Leet's company, Crawford expedition 1782, during the revolution. Battle of Upper Sandusky,Ohio. We found the cemetery without even looking at the stones , I walked about 100 feet stopped and there it was. Pa. archives has an image of his pension with his signature. He died in 1811.

The politically correct definition doesn't align with it's real life usage. You are indeed a yankee and so is my mom.

Arizona Ranger you can’t just go on someone else’s property and erect a fence or do any clearing/improvements without verbal or written permission from the land’s current owner! Sidestep Adventures needs to do some research and find out who owns the property now and then ask for permission to do any improvements to the area.

I grew up close to NYC and there was an old farm house abandoned when I was a kid that I explored. There’s a nursing home there now. There was another abandoned house behind mine in woods. It was a two family believe it or not but it had a date at the peak 1692. Later, they moved it to a museum in NJ. The Demerest house. It’s with the VonSteuben house. It’s the location Washington and his revolutionary army spent two weeks after evacuating New York City. I love the historic stuff just like you, Robert!
I also grew up in that area, and remember the von steuben house, and the area around Old Tappan and Tappan. It's all different there now, I guess that's progress. I also remember the DeWolf cemeteries on DeWolf Rd., which were kept cleared up not only by the neighbors, but our girl scout troop also worked in it.
I am a Georgia boy myself. Your channel is fantastic. My family is from Madison and Monticello. One day I will find the old family plantation that was lost after the war. I know it was 1000 acres but I have no good idea where it was at. Your channel is inspiring me to go on that hunt.

As I recently posted to you I have just found a lady who has been to our BRADLEY FAMILY GRAVEYARD in the woods. I still haven't been there yet as we are all staying home due to Covid 19. Shade G Joiner - Private Mar. 4, 1862. Transferred from 11th Battalion Company B to Co. B, 47th Regt. Ga. Inf. May 12, 1862. In Marion, Miss. hospital Oct. 31, 1863. No later record. Pension records show he was sick in hospital close of war. (Born in Ga. in 1841.)
It's saying on Wikipedia that the 47th Georgia was at chickamauga and defended Savannah Georgia. Looks to me they were combating Sherman's push around that area.

What’s amazing is that all the windows an headlights are still intake. No kid has found it an busted them out. Kinda neat walking on ground that you 3xs Great Grandpa walked on all those years ago! What a neat gift! I’d love to just pick up a few pieces of the old broken glass just to have for memories.
My children go to cemeteries because i have done it for years. All my grandchildren have names that were found in cemeteries. Name you never hear any more. I love it.

When I was a kid we would go to an aunt's house in the country; each time we made the turn we passed a little cemetery on a hill. I felt a weird sensation like it was calling to me but I never got to stop. Fast forward to my early 20s...I'm on the "genealogy graveyard trail" so I decide to make a visit. Lo and behold I find the final resting place of my paternal great-great-grandparents. Laugh if you must, but I think Charles and Sarah wanted to meet me.
My great great great grandfather also served in the Confederate Army. His name was Joseph Carter Green. He was a private in Company K of the 29th Alabama Infantry. Salute to Shady! AWESOME video!

My husband is from Williamston SC, and I lived there for a few years. There are many abandoned homes and family cemeteries in that area that I so enjoyed visiting and learning even a touch of their history. Thank you for sharing your adventures!
Been waiting for this one Robert. One of my favorites due to your connection with the cemetery and your 3XG Grandfathers story. Sitting among your ancestors is very special feeling. I had 2 grandfathers in my line that were named Shadrack as well. Just think somewhere some fellow or lady is looking for a part for their old Chevy rebuild...chrome trim strips maybe and there one sits just waiting. You could check with the county records to see who owns that land, they may give that old Chevy to you just to get it out of their field. Also, nice pecan orchard in the beginning of the video. You might get the OK to pick up pecans next Fall as well.
Robert, this video, in its entirety, is awesome. Its also one of my favourites. To arrive there to find the trees had been felled yet this Timber Company had the decency to leave the Cemetery intact. Sadness to the fact that Shady's wife's gravestone cannot be found. One thing, you must find out the landowner's name and give that beautiful car a loving home. A project for you and Cody. 🌹🌹💚💛💚🌹🌹

I do believe he knew you were sitting down next to his grave. I know where my great, great grandparents on my father's side are buried as it goes back to 1901 and 1917 RIP dates for them and their stone is or was still readable as of 2011 in NJ. It's a well kept, active Catholic cemetery and lots of my parents' families and thus my ancestors are buried there and some day I shall be also.
I am an old car nut and am always interested in an old car found just wasting away. I always remind myself at one time it was brand new and someones pride and joy. And as you said "if it could only talk"

Crazy how so many civil war soldiers suffered from ptsd. This country has gone through so many changes and times when you step back and look at it is amazing how far we’ve come, we’ve learned and are still learning.
Absolutely
PTSD used to known as "shell shocked". I had an uncle that was a tank driver in WW2, back then there was no tour of duty, you were there until the end of the war or until you couldn't serve anymore.
My uncle was the lone survivor of two tanks being destroyed, after he healed from the second they were going to put him in another to drive, long story short, he was discharged on a section 8 "shell shocked". All his family had strict orders from my aunt to never, ever ask him about his service.
It becomes personal when family is involved. Trying to bring back memories that we were too young to understand, and now trying to make sense of them. Of the billions or more lives lived over the ages, no one can recount them all, except God who created every spirit.
Robert, this video popped up from two years ago. I somehow missed it. I know the emotions that you felt seeing this part of your past. I recently located my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th great grandparents cemeteries in Southern Alabama. Emotions ran high as we cleaned their headstones. ♥♥♥

in 2009 I went to western Pa. to find the grave of my G G G G G Grandfather. John Jamison, born in Cavan,Ire of Scot decent.
He served in Leet's company, Crawford expedition 1782, during the revolution. Battle of Upper Sandusky,Ohio.
We found the cemetery without even looking at the stones , I walked about 100 feet stopped and there it was.
Pa. archives has an image of his pension with his signature. He died in 1811.

Arizona Ranger you can’t just go on someone else’s property and erect a fence or do any clearing/improvements without verbal or written permission from the land’s current owner!
Sidestep Adventures needs to do some research and find out who owns the property now and then ask for permission to do any improvements to the area.

I grew up close to NYC and there was an old farm house abandoned when I was a kid that I explored. There’s a nursing home there now. There was another abandoned house behind mine in woods. It was a two family believe it or not but it had a date at the peak 1692. Later, they moved it to a museum in NJ. The Demerest house. It’s with the VonSteuben house. It’s the location Washington and his revolutionary army spent two weeks after evacuating New York City. I love the historic stuff just like you, Robert!
We have homes from the 1700s here on Long Island, but they have been kept up very well over the years
I also grew up in that area, and remember the von steuben house, and the area around Old Tappan and Tappan. It's all different there now, I guess that's progress. I also remember the DeWolf cemeteries on DeWolf Rd., which were kept cleared up not only by the neighbors, but our girl scout troop also worked in it.

I am a Georgia boy myself. Your channel is fantastic. My family is from Madison and Monticello. One day I will find the old family plantation that was lost after the war. I know it was 1000 acres but I have no good idea where it was at. Your channel is inspiring me to go on that hunt.

Was he at the battle of Gettysburg ?
It's saying on Wikipedia that the 47th Georgia was at chickamauga and defended Savannah Georgia. Looks to me they were combating Sherman's push around that area.

What’s amazing is that all the windows an headlights are still intake. No kid has found it an busted them out. Kinda neat walking on ground that you 3xs Great Grandpa walked on all those years ago! My children go to cemeteries because i have done it for years. All my grandchildren have names that were found in cemeteries. Name you never hear any more. I love it.

When I was a kid we would go to an aunt's house in the country; each time we made the turn we passed a little cemetery on a hill. I felt a weird sensation like it was calling to me but I never got to stop. Fast forward to my early 20s...I'm on the "genealogy graveyard trail" so I decide to make a visit. Lo and behold I find the final resting place of my paternal great-great-grandparents. Laugh if you must, but I think Charles and Sarah wanted to meet me.
Your approach to these subjects is extremely settling and calm.

My great great great grandfather also served in the Confederate Army. His name was Joseph Carter Green. He was a private in Company K of the 29th Alabama Infantry. Salute to Shady! AWESOME video!

Wonderful haunting 🎶 Reminds me of BOUNTY. Which had me blubbering. I come from old ohio farms and felt the heart land love and remembrance.
My husband is from Williamston SC, and I lived there for a few years. There are many abandoned homes and family cemeteries in that area that I so enjoyed visiting and learning even a touch of their history. Thank you for sharing your adventures!

Been waiting for this one Robert. One of my favorites due to your connection with the cemetery and your 3XG Grandfathers story. Sitting among your ancestors is very special feeling. I had 2 grandfathers in my line that were named Shadrack as well.
Just think somewhere some fellow or lady is looking for a part for their old Chevy rebuild...chrome trim strips maybe and there one sits just waiting. You could check with the county records to see who owns that land, they may give that old Chevy to you just to get it out of their field. Also, nice pecan orchard in the beginning of the video. You might get the OK to pick up pecans next Fall as well.
Robert, this video, in its entirety, is awesome. Its also one of my favourites. To arrive there to find the trees had been felled yet this Timber Company had the decency to leave the Cemetery intact. Sadness to the fact that Shady's wife's gravestone cannot be found. One thing, you must find out the landowner's name and give that beautiful car a loving home. A project for you and Cody. 🌹🌹💚💛💚🌹🌹
Thank you for taking us to see your Great X3 Granddaddy's grave. I do wish you had a flag to place for him. My Daddy's side of the family were CSA too. The black people who had been freed before the war kept the yankees from burning my Great X 3 Greatuncle's house and fields on the march thru GA.

That is so wonderful that you know and spent time with your great, great, great grandfather. The stone looks in good shape. Take care and stay well. I do believe he knew you were sitting down next to his grave. I know where my great, great grandparents on my father's side are buried as it goes back to 1901 and 1917 RIP dates for them and their stone is or was still readable as of 2011 in NJ. It's a well kept, active Catholic cemetery and lots of my parents' families and thus my ancestors are buried there and some day I shall be also.
