  • The Cougal Spiral, also known as the Border Loop is located deep within the QLD, NSW border ranges. Located on the QLD - NSW interstate railway line, the spiral consists of a continues 1 in 66 grade climb, giving the line a 30 metre height advantage which was crucial in the rail link between QLD and NSW.
This video captures 7MB4 with NR's 11, 17 and AN 8 class locomotives pulling its 1.5km train through the spiral on Monday 12th March 2018.

First time I have ever seen the loop in that context, fantastic, just a few more cars and it would have run over the top of itself.

I went over this two weeks ago on the sleeper from Sydney to Brisbane. I must have woken up at Casino and stayed awake to see the loop in the moonlight out the window. Hard to know you were there as the phone reception and GPS was very poor from the train but there were two smaller tunnels and then the big one into Queensland with the train turning to the right all the time through the first two short tunnels. Nice music on this video too.
    Another experience ticked off!

The train has to be at least 1400 meters long to see your tail like that. Different perspective and fairly rare to see a train in daylight hours on Border Loop. Great work.

Superb work Dylan. One of your best. Amazing image stability throughout.
Solves the problem of the trees hiding a lot of the track when viewed from the lookout.

Great video, thank you. I see those long trains go past my property at Cougal all the time, but I've never been up at the look-out at the right time to see one go around the loop.

I've driven from Brisbane to that to hope and see it from the lookout but never can catch it. Just don't know the timetable for it

Brilliant video. Amazing how still you were able to capture the imagery. The loop/spiral Is certainly, an amazing piece of railway works!
I will be taking my adventure motorbike (2020 Honda CBX500) for a ride along the Lions Road in a few days and even though, I know that I will not see the "loop" in all its glory as you have shown with your video, I'm still looking forward to the ride and seeing what is to be seen!

Absolutely love this video. Great work Dylan. I remember the Border Loop being mentioned on the ABC when I was young. It was obviously of great importance.

Cool Vid, hey how do you know when Bris/Syd trains are scheduled to be at a place? do you wait it out? Or is there at timetable ? I've noticed for a while now not many Bris/Syd trains run during daylight hrs.

A timetable can be obtained through the ARTC website, which gives a rough guide to their locations. Up on the northern side of the North Coast Line and QLD, these trains as you say only seem to run late afternoons or evenings. I've been told this to help keep them out of the way during Sydney peak hour services, which is ultimately where all these monsters end up.
