  • Explore the rich history of Smolensk Cemetery, founded 280 years ago on November 3, 1738. As the oldest continuously operating cemetery in St. Petersburg, it holds a significant place in the city's heritage. Before the 1917 Revolution, it witnessed approximately 800,000 burials, earning the title of the largest city cemetery of the 19th century.
Within its grounds stand two churches. The older one, a neoclassical azure-colored building constructed between 1786-1790, is dedicated to Our Lady of Smolensk. Closed for services by the Bolsheviks from 1940 to 1946, it remains a testament to the cemetery's enduring history. The newer Resurrection Church, completed in 1904, adds further architectural and spiritual depth to this historic burial ground.
