This is my Sifu Gary Lam. Studied with withhim from 1998 to today. I love the guy. He is the best teacher you could have. His Wing Chun is very dangereous. I was one of the original backyard guys. Can you believe he is in his 60s. I'm telling you to thetruth I have had to use my wing chun in the street on several occassions orver the last 20 years. Sifu always said that WING CHUN is not you in wing chun, it is that you are wing chun. During my time his system was three levels. The fourth level was taught in thethird level as well. I coached wing chun for several years as well, not anymore though. With a combination of my boxing, wing chun, wresltling, kicking, and chokes and locks which we learn in wing chun as well it has been a journey of great fun, and fullfillment. It was my Sifu Gary Lam that I found my true martial art, and once I learned his sytem everything else feel into place. He is the best, and what a great interview. Thanks Warrington Martial Arts for this.
Love Sifu Gary Lam and his method, one of my favorites. My Sifu, Samuel Kwok and Gary met up previously some time ago. Would of been legendary being there with them both together!
Wow, terrific interview. Gary Lam is the real deal. You can see (and hear) the power he generates at close range. True economy of movement. How many Sifus would be prepared to get the gloves on and be happy to show themselves getting hit during training? This is VERY rare! Good to see a Wing Chun Sifu that deals in reality, not martial mysticism. Floyd Mayweather is probably the closest thing we have today to the 'untouchable' master. Even other world champions find him really hard to hit. But he still gets hit every time he fights. Doesn't stop him winning the fight. I suspect it would have been something similar with Yip Man. Hitting him was one thing. Beating him was quite another!
I love Sifu Lam. His techniques seem to flow so nicely, it's so interesting to watch him practice with his students. I hope I get to learn from him some day.
Respect to Sifu Lam! This demo is unique among the very, very many I've seen where they heavilt edit the "free-style" or gor sao segments between teacher & student. Here they have not edited out the occasional strikes made by the student.
the "student" is anything but. I've trained with that guy a number of years ago before he was with Gary Lam. The guy was bloody good back then fluent in wing chun, Muay Thai, bjj and a number of other stuff including northern style mantis. The power he generates was massive back then and he was very knowledgeable trained hard and a good laugh. For At least the last 5 years that guy has been training and teaching literally 5 mins walk from my house. The guy is BEYOND good... fast as anything relaxed with it and technically brilliant. Check out some vids on that channel and you'll see what I mean! Gary doesn't look overly comfy in that full face helmet if I'm honest that could be why he missed a few strikes.. but ANYONE who thinks they will go into a spar or fight situation and not get hit once whilst landing perfect blows is dreaming. Reading stuff like oh his chi sao needs to be better etc.. chi sao is a laboratory.. a game.. a place to mutually test and develop and learn. It is NOT a fight.. good chi sao will let you dispatch your opponents arms and structure and find the optimum line for a solid strike.. whilst maintaining your own structure to make that strike powerful. I'm preaching to the converted.. anyone on here can see the guys are skilled and I'm sure if your watching most of you are too but to enter a spar or fight and believe you won't get hit is pure naivety. Great work guys love this video!
i like the face masks, but noticed the neck brace too which is very unique, and seems a very good idea for safety too. i have never seen such a thing. I have not had anyone get to the point of sparring . i teach taijiquan, but i have a former pvt. student who has been doing wing chun for awhile now that i can actually use that equipment with. i also have a taijiquan little brother who is capable of using that equipment too. how much does that gear cost, and can you point me to a link to the site that sells it please. xie xie Sifu .
The power behind the punch is not so great if not looking carefully, but look at the neck of his opponent, bobbing back and forth when the hit landed. If Master Lam uses more power, he will drop his opponent easily. Mater Gary Lam controls his power. This is just punching. Where is the kick? He will not go there. It will even do more damage. Great demo. Remember, his master had put Wing Chun to the test in the street. Hope to see more of the interviews on Master Garry Lam fighting history.
This guy obviously knows what he's talking about and must be a great teacher! His stance on boxing, being limited is fair. I'd rather say it's specialized though. I wonder if integrating some hook punches and head movement to your wing chun would improve it (or is that an entirely different game altogether then?).
Late to the party but... in wing chun there are hook punchs, uppercuts and even head movements. But unfortunately most practitioners don't utilize them. They are in the forms and still most think that using a hook punch is not "wing chun-ish "....
@F F P you can find them in all lineages' forms. Check out any Chum kiu form. It shows you uppercut as concept and also how to throw hook punches in "wing chun way". Many think the forms consist of techniques but in fact they are a collection of ideas, principles and concepts. Like "chain punching"... that is a concept of bombing the opponent with continuous attacks, pressure them.... not punching straight 3 or 4 times. That would be stupid and unrealistic. If you land a punch on the head your next punch will probably miss as the opponent's head will move (will move even if you miss...). The chain punch in the form is a concept of continuous attacking the opponent.
I've actually had mma fighters say to me "wing chun is shit, because I'd never allow myself to get into the sort of fight that wing chun is good at (ie bar fights against multiple attackers in confined spaces with improvised weapons), to which my response is always "gosh... How do you do that? ." 😂

@Bevallalom can you point to a specific style? Can't be mainstream I assume

Make people think your a Honda! Lmfao this is when I liked the video
Is the dog ok?
That sleeping dog is a "master" in his own circle
9:13 the best
unfortunatly - no Lam's branch exists in Russia.. :( Great specialist..
Time to train in Alhambra, CA Igor. You can be the first to bring GLWC to Russia.
I'll give you some respect for sparring.
The way to make Wang Chung work, is to learn western boxing.
Ask Bruce Lee about that!
Better to learn muay thai, it bonds with wing Chun better
