    Quite interesting choices, although I have to say that for the most part the listing are writer/writing oriented based, and generally the artist is always secondary. To me as illustrator, the art also have the same importance if more not more as the script. Otherwise it wouldn't be a visual medium. All this said, because I've seen mentioned such books as Halo Jones, where the story must be good but the art is for me another complete matter. On your list, definitely "Mooncop" and "Nausica" are on my wishlist, "Transmetropolitan", it's an old acquaintance, but the overall artists don't quite cut for me, in spite of the story.
    As for some of my suggestions, who maybe cannot be exactly SF as you perceived, I will mention Moebius "Incal" universe, the "Twilight! mini-series by Howard Cahykin and José Luis Garcia-Lopéz, Enki Bilal "The Nikopol Trilogy" and a little gem called "Tongue & Lash" by Dave Taylor and Randy & Jean-Marc Lofficier.
    Thanks for the comic list and keep the good work.

      [Edit: I'm pinning this comment because it's a great, fundamental question in appreciating comics, and one I love discussing with comics readers!]
      That's an interesting observation! I agree that, for me, the writing is quite important in comics but I wouldn't agree that it takes precedence over the art. For me, great comics are about a great 'marriage' between the writing and the art, and not about individual excellence in each separately. In fact, I don't think the standards for what makes good standalone illustration or good standalone prose writing actually apply to comics (although there will be common elements), and a lot of comics that 'fail' (in my opinion), fail because they cannot create the alchemy between the two.
      Therefore, a comic works differently for me than a book of photographs or paintings collected together. So I would say that writing and art are equally important, which may be why 6 out of 10 of this list (and many comics in various lists of mine) are by writer-artists. Many of the people I spotlight on this channel (Herge, Eisner, Chris Ware, Linda Medley) write and draw both, and many of my other personal favourites (Rick Geary, Richard Sala, Joe Sacco, Darwyn Cooke, the Brothers Hernandez, and dozens of others) are people who do both.
      And yes, comics is a visual medium, but prose and poetry are too. I mean, it is all visual, it just depends on how you shape what is being taken in by the eyes (as opposed to the ears, or skin, etc).
      In this list, I consider every book's art to be superlative for its contribution to the 'story', like how We3 could not be We3 without Quietly's incredible layouts and panel work, among other things. But I love the art in Soft City even if it looks weird (maybe *because* it looks weird!) because the tone of the story would not be as unsettling and as hypnotic without it. Ditto for Ian Gibson's work on Halo Jones.
      It is also why as much as I love the art of Alex Ross, I can completely understand if someone says it interferes with them reading a story.
      You are right, though, that I do like comics with a narrative bent. Someone once said about film that it picked the novel to base itself on (instead of photography, dance, sculpture, etc) and my preferences in comics could be the way it is with movies: it is possible to be completely impressionistic and abstract, and I can appreciate it, but I will always lean more towards story. So for comics, while I can be impressed with art techniques, it is not a guarantee of excellence as a whole comic, just the way that vocabulary and prose techniques are not a guarantee of excellence either.
      It's interesting you should mention the Incal, because that made my honourable mentions video because of its great art, but falls short of my Top 10 because the writing doesn't work for me in the same way! I am looking your other recommendations out right now - thank you!

      @ftloc  2 роки тому +2

      I read the first volume of Monster and enjoyed it, but it didn't grab me as thoroughly or as immediately as Pluto did. I'm guessing that it is a slow burn as well, so I really should check out at least the second volume for a better view of it. I really liked the plot and the setup, it was just the exposition and presentation of the characters' interior thoughts that felt a little overblown to me. But as soon as I can find Vol 2 I will re-read Vol 1 and then 2, back-to-back!

    I absolutely loved your list and I’m definitely going to check out some of the comics on your list that I haven’t read. With that being said, I’m surprised none of the Sci-Fi comics from the famous English Anthology Comic Magazine, 2000 A.D. didn’t make the cut. For me some of the best non- superhero comics (Which I love) are found in the pages of 2000 A.D. Some of my favorites 2000 A.D. titles are: the ABC Warriors, Nemesis the Warlock, Strontium Dog, Rogue Trooper, and of course Judge Dredd. Regardless, your Sci-Fi list is pretty amazing and I’m just happy that I found your channel. As a new fan and subscriber, I look forward to seeing more of your content. Again, thank you so much for sharing and I’ll definitely be back to watch another one of your videos. Take care!

      And I have to admit that when I made this video, I was largely unfamiliar with 2000 AD outside the comics of Alan Moore (and Halo Jones cracks my list!). I actually came here expecting to see Jodorowsky's "The Metabarons" or Druillet's "Lone Sloane", but I can't deny that all your choices are great! When you bottle things down to ten, some choices are inevitably left by the wayside, but that's part of the fun of it. I'm an avid Jack Vance reader and I had no idea that "The Moon Moth" (one of his more well-known short stories) had been made into a comic at all! If you enjoyed it, I'd certainly recommend reading some of his other short stories or books.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 років тому

      haywoco2 Yes, absolutely, the act of filtering to a limited list is a real workout! Of course, I’m also going to be restricted by what I have read and completed (Lone Sloane I need to get to, as I need to get to the Obscure Cities books).
      I’ve been on the lookout for a great collection/ edition of Vance stories - any recommendations?

    • @haywoco2
      @haywoco2 5 років тому

      @@ftloc The best collection/edition of Vance stories you can find is the Vance Integral Edition, a 44-volume restored edition of Vance's complete works overseen and approved by Vance himself before his death. It's hugely expensive due to the low print run (a collection usually goes for a few thousand dollars on Ebay), but that's the best you can get. If you're looking to get started with a much more reasonable entry, I can't recommend "The Compleat Dying Earth" enough--a collection of Vance's Dying Earth stories set in a future so distant that the Earth's sun is soon to go out. It includes his immensely clever stories of the rogue Cugel, and one of my favourite Vance short stories, "Liane the Wayfarer". www.amazon.in/Compleat-Dying-Earth-Service-Midwest/dp/0739401106/

    I've been really enjoying your channel! I like these lists you come up with. I've read a bunch of them but you still give me some new things I wasn't aware of that I gotta check out. I have no disputes with your top ten science fiction comics! I'm a big proponent of Planetes so I'm glad you gave it some love in the honorable mentions. Warren Ellis writes a lot of my other favorite science fiction comics. He's one of the western comics writers who is committed to writing superb science fiction - Orbiter, Ocean, Ministry of Space, Planetary, etc. If I had to make my own list I'd feel your pain of having to limit myself. I was also curious if you've read The Life and Times of Martha Washington by Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons, and, if so, what are your thoughts on it?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 років тому +2

      PerfectDru thank you so much, it’s so great to hear you’re enjoying the channel! Yes, limiting oneself in lists is the only kind of workout I indulge in, so I give it my all! 😀
      No, I haven’t read Martha Washington but I’ve heard decent things about it. Would you recommend it? Also I’ve been really curious about Orbiter but never managed to find a good purchase - maybe I should start looking again...

    • @PerfectDru
      @PerfectDru 5 років тому

      @@ftloc yes, I would recommend Martha Washington, especially if you appreciate Miller's and Gibbons' other works from the eighties and nineties. It's an alternative history/future science fiction story that's blatantly packed with social commentary and politics - but it's also presented in a satirical fashion, and there's plenty of action, so I think it holds up even if specific elements of its subtext may seem dated. Conversely, other elements may seem more timely than ever given the current cultural context, which is kind of chilling or bizarre in its own way. Dark Horse did an omnibus collecting all of the Martha Washington stories (The Life and Times of Martha Washington in the Twenty-first Century), so it's nice to have it all in one place.
      As for Orbiter, a couple years ago DC reprinted it and Ocean in one deluxe hardcover edition, so that's probably the best thing to look for. I think of Orbiter, Ocean, and Ministry of Space as Ellis' space trilogy. They're all separate stories, but each of them thematically examines the nature of space travel from a different angle, and reading them all gives you as a reader plenty of things to think about and ponder.

      @@ftloc yes theres five volumes. the series is also very good for re-reads. I've Read it multiple times and each time i find something new in it. The way its structured(three main stories, each with its own artist) keeps a sort of freshness to it even at the fourth re-read, And Brandon Graham's dynamic writing also keeps the story fresh and entertaining with a mix of psychedelic sci-fi, gritty Conan-like adventures, and Graham's weird humor and imagination.

Every review is sophisticated and balanced and I know if you choose it it must be good . You also mentioned the obscure titles are neglected in the US market and this is beyond true . Thanks again I can’t wait to see what else you have in store . PS- the BEST science fiction comic title was actually a two part piece from Heavy Metal magazine from 1989: The Waters of Deadmoon . Will always be my favorite until the day I die I believe it is a French translation . Heavy Metal magazine exposed the US markets to the genius of Mobius and European artists for the first time .

    Great choices. Good to see many non American comics on this list. Halo Jones is my favourite Alan Moore. I feel like it doesn't recieve the recognition it deserves because it is somewhat incomplete. Personally I think stories from 2000AD could fill this list. So many Dredd stories, the best of which for me is Song of the Surfer, but also America, Block Mania, The Pit. Bad Company was mind blowing during its run. So many Nemesis stories.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 роки тому +1

      I too feel Halo Jones doesn't get anywhere near the acclaim it deserves. I'm actually fine with it being 'unfinished'; the myth and legend of Halo seems to be amplified by that 'imagine what she did next' end. Of course, if Moore ever wrote more, I'd be first in line!

  • @WalkingManComics

    SO glad you showed us Akira in B&W! The color version is fine, but ah, black and white. WE3 is well worthy of your praise, as is Halo Jones. Moon Moth? Probably the best comic I've...well, you're right, I've never heard of, as is Moon Cop and Soft City. But will look for'em--. Ex Mach! Wouldn't've figured this as SF, but yeah, you make a good case for an excellent comic. I remember starting Pluto, but somehow only got through vol. 1. Will look into it again as I believe the library has it on the shelves! Nausiica. Such foolishness. Of course it's science fiction. And so beautuifully done. Transmet. Transmet. I hate all of you. Nice video! How would you separate what is sci-fi and what is fantasy? I've always been told that sci-fi is something that deals with what doesn't exist, but theoretically could, based on our current understanding of science (for example, aliens). On the other hand, fantasy is what doesn't exist and also could never exist, it's beyond the realm of what is scientifically possible (for example, magic). Would you separate like that?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah that’s just one of those perennial questions, isn’t it? Honestly, I’m not militant about any definition or even the need for definitions, but I’m more or less aligned with what you’ve described. There’s a lot of Sci Fi that could be argued as ‘impossible’ by people who know a lot more about science than I do, so it’s not *only* about possibility, perhaps.
      The slight adjustment I may add is Sci Fi, for me, is based on what we know and have learned of through science, irrespective of what it projects. Fantasy is as capable of commenting on our world, but doesn’t rely on our existing scientific knowledge for its worlds. (Maybe the social sciences? 😀)
      So a radioactive spider may be borderline magic for all its ability to give you superpowers, but seems more ‘scientifically excused’ than being imbued with power from a sword, say?

Movie wise I would recommend Battle Angel Alita it is extraordinary and it got mind blowing better on second and third viewing - I also purchased the graphic novel run and yes to your point the Japanese are supreme masters in the genre. Because I am impressed with your line up I will recommend Give Me Liberty and Martha Washington by Dave Gibbons ( of Watchmen fame) and Frank Miller from 1996. Transmetropolitan is one of the greatest comic, but I think as a science fiction I will choose first the invisibles or planetary :)

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 років тому

      David Garcia Herrera Perfectly sensible and I’m sure many would agree with you. But even early on in Transmet, the three separate stories on the cryogenically frozen people, the reservations, and the foglet upload clearly established Transmetropolitan as brainy AND emotional AND ‘moral’ sci fi, and the mob/emergency police stuff later is firmly embedded in the very sci fi concepts established here.
      Personally, I never quite enjoyed the Invisibles as much in my heart, and shamefully I have not yet read Planetary, in spite of getting the omnibus last year. But the teeming and seething sci fi of Transmet, of the crowds walking over pavement screens and tapping into feeds, ripe for a contraceptive bomb, are just indelible sci fi to me!

      Thanks for the suggestions - I'm looking them up! I've enjoyed what little of JMS I have read in my life, and I think his TV stuff was good sci fi too!
      I'm curious as to what you meant by 'European culture' in the Invisibles. I am sure I missed more than half of the allusions, but I usually enjoy European comics just as much as I do American or Asian comics, so I wouldn't have thought it would be a reason to not like something, but I'd be interested in your take on that .

    • @SrMarkavian
      @SrMarkavian 5 років тому

      What I mean by 'European culture' is:
      Part of the aesthetic of the characters is what we could find in the streets of London or other big cities in Europe in the 80s. That punk looks was more common here than other part of the world, same as the look of the buildings or some of the rooms that are drawing in the pages. The culture from America is more spread and better understand for others than the European. But this is a really hard topic to express in just few lines because generalize that way is not bring the reality of the culture that we life. And some part of the understand of a comic is the feeling that invoke on the reader, and as you said it is a good comic but didn't move you as much as me :)
      And when you say you think you miss some of the allusions, I think you understand then from the point of view that you read/learn about it in a book/comic or tv but some of that same allusions I lived it.
      In other of your videos you spoke about some Indian comic (don't remember now the exact one) but I checked it and I though that it was ok but nothing truly remarkable just because some of the context of the story didn't make too much sense to me.

If you read Spanish, almost the same... a few suggestions: Norma Editorial,Aia Editorial, Aleta, Apa-Apa comics, Astiberri. There’s also a wide number of good authors in other countries, so you have to check if English versions are available. If you read Portuguese try some Brazilian authors (some translated in English...) - they have a huge amount of new wonderful artists and a lot of releases. Hope you found this helpfull. Cheers...
