I found inserting the key from the back makes it easier to read. (My fat fingers are not in the way.)
Also, inserting the key upside-down, (cuts down,) let the bevels of the cut guide the key to the correct gauge. I notice you slide the key against the top causing jumps at every change of size. Sliding against the bottom is smoother.
