Abraham Heschel is an amazing writer. His book on The Sabbath changed my life about how HE celebrated the sabbath day. Wow! What a beautiful love story about The Creator. I’m am not Jewish but inside he drew me about the God of Israel.
Great teacher! Some thoughts: The sublime as an echo of God.... sounds a little like Kant. Heschel Prophetic Consciousness has an overview of German Philosophy. Heschel is always looking for way to defeat materialistic thinking. This is his consistent thread. "Nature is where it is at" ends up in Spinozaism put into a social philosophy. Spinoza depersonalizes God, and thereby Nature. Nature is God in extension. Thus all matter is congealed light of God, even s stone. This leave man as a spirit confronted by God a being, the earthly is challenge to man to remember who God is, who we are. This is the source of all moral action.
Some things are explained nicely, but take what he says with a grain of salt. Not all of it is explained correctly. Some things that were alluded to need to be elaborated upon in greater depth so as not to be misunderstood.
