So glad to see ranking of kings in your list! Everytime I watch the 2nd OP my eyes get teary and I get emotional. I highly recommend watching it, if whoever is reading this hasn't already
That Lights Out Match with Baker and Thunder Rosa was reminiscent of those extreme rules matches you'd see in ECW back in the day, the bloodiest female wrestling match I've seen, really entertaining too, nice to see that it made the list.
It warmed my heart to see acknowledgement of FD. He’s featured in my class discussions and I wasn’t sure whether people knew him or no. I appreciate this list
I stumble across videos from Food4Dogs every now and then, and she is at once the most powerful weeb I've ever witnessed, and one of the most chill channels on UA-cam. Love that she's out there doing her thing, and hope she continues for a long time hence.
Ranking of Kings gave me that feeling from watching Maid in Abyss the first time. All I could feel from the show was just an overwhelming amount of love and passion from the animators that is so, so uncommon in most shows. Except with RoK, every single episode is amazing. The pacing of the show is so magnificent and I am frequently amazed with how the show handles its characters. It reminded me of why I love the animated medium, and I can’t thank it enough for that.
I loved that you mentioned SMT V! I want ATLUS to get recognized for their amazing games and beautiful beautiful soundtracks and I'm glad you enjoyed SMT V!
Atlus got a lot of recognition the past years with Persona 5. The only thing that is burdening them from actual greatness is their own pigheadedness about trying to keep the best games locked to a single platform and then offering everyone else the leftovers. They get significantly less backlash than they should being that dumb and self-obsessed.
I look forward to these every season because they always introduce me to some amazing art and even if he talks about something that isn’t as much my speed, I love hearing him talk about stuff he’s passionate about. That being said, I’m shocked I didn’t see Arcane on here anywhere. That show seems so his speed and everything about it is just *chef’s kiss*
Your comparison of Ranking of Kings to Mob Psycho is spot on! Exactly my feelings! Always lovely to hear what you have to say, you are the kind of person who can make me watch hour long videos about things I did not previously care about!
I'm glad Ranking of Kings is getting the recognition it deserves. I started watching it with no real expectations and maybe even slight apprehension at the art style. Two episodes in and it was already my sleeper hit of the season. 20 episodes in and I genuinely believe it's a masterpiece that will stand the test of time.
Yes, FD Signifier is an absolute tonic for online left-video essay space. If you like him I would also reccomend his online chum and occaisional collaborator CJ the X, they has some quite long analysis of things like Ariana Grande and Bo Burnham but some of their earlier shorts on Arrival, Wandavision or When Marnie Was There are just amazing and good places to start.
Glad to see somebody giving Belle the credit it deserves! It's really a "feel piece" - it falls apart intellectually but darn if it didn't make me feel so many different emotions on so many levels.
@@nyom6378 There are a lot of potholes, mostly. If you question the logic of the narrative purely by how rational it seems, I feel like it falls apart. But on an emotional level, it hits so hard, it's amazing!
F.D Signifier is great. I started watching his stuff a few months ago and I've rapidly become a huge fan. The second he drops a new video I'm there watching it.
I'm really happy to see Belle be given some sort of positive feedback on here. While I understand a lot of the criticisms against it and why so many people took issue with its story, but for me personally it was one of the most uplifting films I've seen in years. Having had my own horrible experiences online, having been toxic online due to my own issues bleeding into my internet activity which hurt my relationships both irl and online resulting in me going through therapy for two years now, Belle just spoke to me on such a personal level.
Yes! You finally discovered Food4Dogs! She is legit hardcore JRPG player. She's cool. Her video isn't as succint as younger UA-camr but her viewpoints as an older person who _gets it_ is great! I've been a fan for the last two years!
Late, but I just wanted to say, similar to your comment on "My Senpai is Annyoing", your channel has similarly become that warm blanket to me. It's just pleasant to watch someone talk about stuff they love in varying degrees.
"Senpai is Annoying" is a pretty nice pick, glad he liked and recommended it. Btw, that show's secondary pairing (with the spiked-haired guy and the long black-haired girl) reminded me a little bit of Karakai Jozu no Takagi-San and its main pairing. Even the girls look and behave quite a bit similarly. Speaking of, Takagi-San's 3rd Season blew me away with how cute, comforting and heartwarming it consistently is. And yesterday's episode was truly amazing. Can't wait for the final few episodes as well as its upcoming movie. And I recall that John actually recommended its 1st Season in his Spring 2018 Favorite Things video, which is awesome.
Uzaki is coming soon and I’m glad because I think it’s a lot more fun than annoying senpai and nagataro. And I can’t get over takagi sans big ass 5 head lmao
Okay, I did NOT expect the Swamp Thing rec. Right on, one of my first comics and all time favorites. I also recommend everyone to check the current Swamp Thing series by Ram V and Mike Perkins, don't worry about not having read Moore's run or anything Swamp Thing prior starting with it, and the second "season" of it is starting this month!
Ram V is doing amazing work currently on anything he touches. If he can nail the 2nd part of his Swamp Thing run when it comes back then it'll be on the level with Alan Moores run, imho. Also Green Hell by Lemire had a fun premise and 1st issue.
Everytime I see a truly emotional and body breaking fight, I cry. The vulnerability of big muscle men/lady's letting their emotions flow in the most honest way someone can. Seeing John's videos has really helped me realize my love for the medium and I thank you
Belle wasn’t a fantastic movie but I love the songs, Kylie McNeil was incredible in the English dub- and the dub team was able to work with the film’s composers & the lyrics are excellent so I’m still listening to the soundtrack all the time
Belle was probably my most disappointing theater experience for an anime film, like I was waiting the entire time to see exactly why the critics and audience were praising it for and yet the messy story and the lousy finale just made me felt underwhelmed after the movie was done. Hosoda is so bad at making a cohesive story by himself, he needs a second script writer to help him tightening up the plot. I love Summer Wars but that was also thanks to Satoko Okudera who did the screenplay for Hosoda's first three movies.
@@ryantheanimator1156 yeah, not one of his best. I love The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Wolf Children, Summer Wars, and The Boy and the Beast. Hosoda is an awesome director but not every director is a great writer.
As someone who liked Belle, apparently more than most, I would say that its themes of online identity vs real identity and overcoming trauma spoke to me really strongly. The visuals and music are amazing, most people agree there, but I liked the story too. It might not connect with everyone, but it DID connect with me. But it's ok to not like it, of course. I'm just really glad to have watched it on the big screen. Some movies are best experienced that way, in my opinion.
@@fpedrosa2076 Really appreciate your perspective! I will agree that the themes of real vs online identity are pretty relevant and were mostly effective! Goes to show that every movie has something for someone.
Always great to see someone discover the magic of Moore's Swamp Thing run. If you're interested in more great Swampy tales, I personally suggest the Nancy A. Collins years, collected in a gorgeous omnibus along with the New 52 Run. Both writers on that run really experimented in cool ways with the Swamp Thing lore and make unique stamps on the character. Swampy is kind of the character DC is willing to let writers get a bit bolder with their own interpretations and it's always amazing seeing what someone else brings to the saga.
These videos are like mana from the heavens. I have never heard of a lot of the things you list and every single one of these videos are treasure troves of brand new experiences.

I can respect not liking Hasoda's movies but damn Wolf Children was pretty good 😭 Regardless I can't wait to watch Belle I hope it lives up to the praise
I love all of Mamoru Hosoda's movies and I'm VERY HAPPY that there's a new one I haven't watched yet! 🤩 There's gonna be an animation festival in my city soon, I'll check if they'll have it there so I can watch it on the big screen!
@@AHylianWarrior lol what? Not at all seeing how he’s “one dimensional” in the slightest as the whole point of the movie is that he’s trying to find his identity and figure out who he is being half human and half werewolf. That’s FAR from “one dimensional” in the slightest. And he’s FAR from being “hOrrIbLy SelfIsh” at all, he’s just struggling to find out where he is in life and he finally figures out his place at the end. That’s the whole point of the movie of these kids figuring out who they are.
Yaaay! So happy to see Food4Dogs here :) its so great to see her love for games. She is so open and welcoming. Trying out games even if "gamers" call those games bad etc. Tbh the snowgrave route really hit hard.. To me it felt real and cruel.
Eddie Kingston is amazing. Give him a feud and he'll sell it in one promo. A guy who feels real on the mic and is a fantastic, underrated brawler in the ring. I really hope at some point AEW decides to give him the world championship because he's genuinely one of their greatest assets.

Ok... so how you described Ranking of Kings I can't possibly _not_ watch it anymore. I am a dry and old pos and yet you were successful to hype me up for one thing. Thanks for that. I think I'll enjoy the show.
YES! Finally, someone with a big audience talks about The House! I watched it last month and loved it so much only to be devastated by the lack of people talking about it online aside from a few Ending Explained type channels. (Although I am a little sad the third story didn't grab you in the same way it did me, but I'm still thrilled you liked the whole thing)
man i had to search the comments and you're the only one commenting on it! man the second story gave me that actual horror feeling and the last was actually so warm and cozy i could sleep after watching it! absolutely perfect. loved the film.
I have been a follower and regular viewer since the earliest videos of this channel. While I enjoyed this video, one of the main reasons why I became a fan and patron was the more grounded, semi-intellectual and cozy tone, which was consistent with all of the older videos and which stands in contrast with the overly excited and theatric style of many mainstream youtubers. It always invited me to brew a cup of tea before before getting ready to engage with new, out-of-the-box perspectives on different kinds of media. In fact, watching this channel for over six years has made me change my perception on media content, which has led to me enjoying the media I already liked even more and to become more open-minded towards media that I wouldn’t have given a chance before. I feel that this new numbering format and some narrative and editorial choices from other recent videos endanger the very core aspects that made me enjoy this channel in particular. I feel that more dramatic elements take away from the strengths of this channel and actually inhibit me from rethinking my paradigms and discovering new perspectives. In case you read this comment, please keep up the good work and create the type of videos that you enjoy, and please don’t overthink my or other viewers opinions too much.
Belle, Ranking of Kings, SMTV, and Deltarune? Usually I find something new to explore from these types of videos but in this case it’s just someone agreeing with everything I’ve liked recently
If you liked Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, you’ll like his Miracleman run. It was basically the testing ground for ideas he would put into Swamp Thing and Watchmen.
I thought boy and the beast was middling, but wolf children and mirai were beautiful. I adored Belle, despite some weirdness in the writing, so am happy to see some positive takes on it. I also am tickled to see a director continue to ruminate on a single idea throughout their career (i.e., "that internet movie"). I think it's a pretty interesting swing to continue meditating on our intersections with the internet through all of these different lenses
Ranking of Kings has made me cry so often. It's so heartwarming, and seeing Bojji's face full of tears instantly starts the waterworks again. I've listened to and watched the 2nd opening more times than I can count
Kinda sad that Summit of the gods wasn’t a part of this list. A beautiful animated movie about the haunting guilt one can feel throughout their lives combined with the never ending obsession one might feel as they discover their calling in life. Beautiful music and animation and amazingly somber and gripping story that had me rewatching it 5 times. If ya’ll haven’t seen it I give it a high recommend. Another recommendation i have is Fighting in the age of loneliness. A in-depth and detailed look at the history of combat sports and how it can mirror the current state of western society as it evolves from backwater gym brawls to one of the largest sports in the world and how it isn’t exempt from the exploitation and corporatisation things will experience once people realise they can make money of it. Amazing if you are and aren’t a friend of MMA and also has a wonderfully existential ending that still moves me on my 10th time watching.
I think a top 5 could be really fun, but I like the category format more and it leaves more room to put in things without worrying about where on a list they'd go
Dude..... Belle was phenomenal, kinda watched it on a whim and was blown away by some of the singing numbers, the movie was a bit messy at times but it’s good overtakes the bad
I haven't even watched it yet so I don't have an opinion on it but I just want to say why do people feel the need to go out of their way when they see someone enjoyed something and say "no it's bad actually you're wrong" when they can mind their business.....
@@daanthedoctor I think it comes from a misunderstanding people have when they hear a movie us liked and they hear "this movie is objectively good". So they feel the need to correct others by saying, "No, X isn't objectively good and here's why." Instead of hearing people say, "I like this movie for X reasons". People need to be self aware of what they enjoy and criticize. Like I will buy Belle day 1 on Blu-ray because I love it. But does that mean I ignored how the world of U doesn't actually make logical sense or the ending scene with the dad was kind of bad? No. I loved it for other reasons.

One of my fav things now is that you can kinda reliably play six degrees of separation with youtubers and it lets you kinda get an idea of what everyone's corner of this website is, where they like to take excursions out into for a fun adventure, etc. (also I've always loved your analysis, thanks for the fun)
Hey it’s you again I like you
HI HEY IT'S YOU HELLO
So glad to see ranking of kings in your list! Everytime I watch the 2nd OP my eyes get teary and I get emotional. I highly recommend watching it, if whoever is reading this hasn't already
That Lights Out Match with Baker and Thunder Rosa was reminiscent of those extreme rules matches you'd see in ECW back in the day, the bloodiest female wrestling match I've seen, really entertaining too, nice to see that it made the list.
Dude do you ever not comment?
Atleast you’re not a bot
You didn't like botted this one. And you have an actual rational opinion for once. Are you an imposter?
Watch Japanese wrestling. It's full of that in some promotions. Same with current American promotions like CZW and GCW.
I’m starting to wonder if you only exist as some unknown entity that roams the UA-cam digital space
Ranking of Kings is definitely one those shows that had I grown up watching would've shaped so much of what I enjoy. It's got so much heart!
Calling JoJo a turn based cartoon is possible the best description I've ever heard.
YES! Seeing Leon Massey get the recognition he deserves is a delight, he's utterly phenomenal and HIGHLY underrated.
The football player!?
I actually subscribed to him a year ago when Strive came out so it's cool to see him being mentioned
Ha. Yeah at that part I was like "Joke's on you. I've been subscribed to him for over a year already."
You got to 4 minutes before the existential dread hit. That's very impressive.
Joho never fails to deliver the existential goods :,)
Shin Megami Tensei V is why I bought a Switch. I'm really glad you liked it.
Why does it fall intellectually?? I am genuinely curious
@@nyom6378 There are a lot of potholes, mostly. If you question the logic of the narrative purely by how rational it seems, I feel like it falls apart. But on an emotional level, it hits so hard, it's amazing!
Well, as a One Piece fan, you describing Ranking of Kings the way you did, my brain triggers interest in it suddenly.
Believe me, One Piece is my favourite piece of media ever and I can say with full confidence that you will love Ranking of Kings
F.D Signifier is great. I started watching his stuff a few months ago and I've rapidly become a huge fan. The second he drops a new video I'm there watching it.
Same here man, I just became a fan yesterday and I’ve seen a good amount of his videos already. He’s so good at what he does.
Hell yeah for the Izzyzzzz shoutout. There was a weird time in my life where so many Garfield videos surrounded me...
*puts hamster with banana meme*
I am so happy you have finally read Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, John. Legitimately one of the best comics I've ever read.
It is glorious to hear you talk about SMT, still haven't beaten 5 yet but got side tracked with life. Regardless, this was an awesome video dude :D
omg finally someone mentions My Senpai is Annoying. felt like i was the only one who watched and liked it
Okay, I did NOT expect the Swamp Thing rec.
@@ryantheanimator1156 Exactly how I felt. After watching it my partner and I were really confused by all of the praise it's received.
Anatomy is one of the scariest things I've ever witnessed and I love it and I will never actually play it alone.
Ranking of Kings has become one of my fave animes of all time, very warm art style, but hides REALLY dark tone under all that cuteness.
I don't even watch anime, I just like the vibe of these videos. Great musical selection. 👌
You should. Lots of good ones.
You honestly should try watching anime
These videos are like mana from the heavens. I have never heard of a lot of the things you list and every single one of these videos are treasure troves of brand new experiences.
One of my favourite things of any season is the new Super Eyepatch Wolf video. They're what keep me going.
just wanna say ranking of kings has made me cry like UGLY cry every single episode every single week for 21 weeks and this description was the first time I heard somebody who loves it mention it so WELL
Ranking of Kings should be talked about soooo much more it might very well be my favorite anime of all time
Anatomy IS a deep cut but I'm damn glad you brought it up.
I can respect not liking Hasoda's movies but damn Wolf Children was pretty good 😭 Regardless I can't wait to watch Belle I hope it lives up to the praise
Boy and the beast was FANTASTIC and I really wished more people give it prasie!
@@Gadget-Walkmen I enjoyed that movie too 🙌
I love all of Mamoru Hosoda's movies and I'm VERY HAPPY that there's a new one I haven't watched yet! 🤩
There's gonna be an animation festival in my city soon, I'll check if they'll have it there so I can watch it on the big screen!
The boy in Wolf Children annoyed me so much he was so horribly selfish and one-dimensional in the end it ruined it for me lol
Ousama ranking OP is really one of the best OP of all times , the song is amazing and the visuals made me tear up
Pleasantly surprised to see wolf talk about 2 of my other absolute favorite youtubers Izzyzz and Leon
Eddie Kingston is amazing. Give him a feud and he'll sell it in one promo. A guy who feels real on the mic and is a fantastic, underrated brawler in the ring. I really hope at some point AEW decides to give him the world championship because he's genuinely one of their greatest assets.
Hell yeah, Swamp Thing! I love reading comics, both American and Japanese, and you're one of my favorite channels on UA-cam. Even if it's only for a short few minutes, I love to hear about you enjoying some of the great stories from the comics of this side of the world too.
the second op from Ranking of kings is incredible. The first time I saw it, I said : "oh, his op will make me cry if I let go" and that what happend after a few minute in the episode 18 😢
What a good show.
These are always my favorite videos. Not only do you always shout out some of my favorite creators and shows, but I am always introduced to something that I end up loving. Thank you for all that you do!
Belle was a criminally underrated movie and I really wish I wasn't the only person in theater watching it in my town. :(
Belle was most definitely a movie that exists
Im so happy you brought attention to Ranking of Kings and this Op! I'm still watching it atm ( I'm at ep20) and I love it so much - and just as you said this Op is incredible. I get goosebumps every single time I watch it and I never have even thought about skipping it because it's not just fantastic to experience on its own but it totally enhances the story! Great Video :)
I have never felt my soul leave my body faster then hearing that Swamp Thing song…
Ok... so how you described Ranking of Kings I can't possibly _not_ watch it anymore.
Thank you so so much for talking about Wrestling again
Ranking of Kings is honestly my favorite thing to come out in a long time and has made cry harder than I've ever cried watching something.
The fact mob psycho was THE anime to compare too as an adaptation that's cream of the crop made me smile
It’s kinda bizarre that I discovered some of your recommendations a day or two before I saw this video
Belle, Ranking of Kings, SMTV, and Deltarune? Usually I find something new to explore from these types of videos but in this case it’s just someone agreeing with everything I’ve liked recently
You have really put me onto some of my favorite things over the last few years. I really appreciate what you do!
If you liked Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, you’ll like his Miracleman run. It was basically the testing ground for ideas he would put into Swamp Thing and Watchmen.
Y'know John, I don't know you but you somehow turn a video about the things you like into a compelling bit of entertainment and I love it
I remember watching Vinny play Anatomy like 6 years ago in one of his october streams and I've never been more unsettled. That was a deepcut GODDAMN
Honestly I'm all here for the new format or whatever format you wanna do. The energy and fun you brought to this was just downright infectious.
God love the new format already, it's really fun!
@we will do it finally we been waiting
Thank you for the bottom of my heart for mentioning swamp thing. The only time Alan Moore really asks us what it means to be loved.
Great stuff as always! I sincerely hope you get to that idea you talked about on the Delta Rune section. We all need that drive...Maybe someday.
Yes! I love Jeff Bakalar! Ever since he was one Giant Beast Cast I’ve been looking for more stuff with him in it!
I think a top 5 could be really fun, but I like the category format more and it leaves more room to put in things without worrying about where on a list they'd go
I hope the State of Shonen Jump video is going well too
RIP Magu-chan
These videos always never fail to remind me how much amazing things are in the world. Thanks John.
Dude..... Belle was phenomenal, kinda watched it on a whim and was blown away by some of the singing numbers, the movie was a bit messy at times but it’s good overtakes the bad
I was terribly bored. Though I was also bored by the original beauty and the beast and the live action remake.
No it's not, the U world was boring, the "Beauty and the Beast" part was shoehorned in without any substance, and the third act was stupid as fuck.
I haven't even watched it yet so I don't have an opinion on it but I just want to say why do people feel the need to go out of their way when they see someone enjoyed something and say "no it's bad actually you're wrong" when they can mind their business.....
@@ryantheanimator1156 cool bro
@@daanthedoctor I think it comes from a misunderstanding people have when they hear a movie us liked and they hear "this movie is objectively good". So they feel the need to correct others by saying, "No, X isn't objectively good and here's why." Instead of hearing people say, "I like this movie for X reasons".
People need to be self aware of what they enjoy and criticize. Like I will buy Belle day 1 on Blu-ray because I love it. But does that mean I ignored how the world of U doesn't actually make logical sense or the ending scene with the dad was kind of bad? No. I loved it for other reasons.
Thanks for making this! I knew you'd share some amazing new content and you delivered like always. A woman I met at an arcade bar the other day told me about Ranking of Kings and now hearing it from you, I know what must be done.
I always love these videos, man. Every time, I come away with something new to look into! Thanks for curating this content for us, and for keeping up the great work despite everything world throws at us! Have a good one! :)
Honestly, seeing Ranking of Kings in the thumbnail didn’t ruin the surprise at all. It just made me even more hyped with each passing number. By number 3 I was thinking “oh man it better be in here” lol. Show is incredible
7:03 I’m part of that 27% in Sifu. As of writing, I beat Sean last night literally on my last chance. so now I’m 76 years old and just need to beat the rest of the game perfectly :”^)
Nah, the game lets you override your age in a stage if you can reach it when your younger. I just gotta beat Sean without losing so many years while fighting him
When Healing is embracing Bojji, I get teary eyes EVERYTIME! I'm absolutely shure this song by Vaundy is coming up as my "on repeat" at my spotify yearly thingy.
I love Food4Dogs! She's such a wonderful lady and her video about how she got into gaming was so heartwarming
I'm so glad others are learning about her too
Jojo as a “TURNED BASED CARTOON” has completely wrecked my worldview.
