What is Social Structure?

- This video, shot for social science courses at the University of Maine at Augusta, considers that hackneyed old phrase "social structure." "It's a structural issue," say the sociologists. "Structural racism is at the root," say the activists. "A social structural perspective will yield greater contextual perspective," say the continental philosophers. What on Earth are they talking about? It's not gobbledygook -- it's just different. Follow along as Social Science faculty member James Cook discusses the meaning of the phrase "social structure" and introduces a few of the many varieties of social structures that sociologists study in their research work. Application to gender is introduced as an illustrative example.
An important lecture for me thanks
I really appreciate your videos! I opted for the online class because it fit better with my schedule, but I was worried it could be a bit boring. You make the subject interesting and you are very engaging, even through a screen. Thank you!
4 years later and we all have online class xd
you were amazing at explaining everything, keep it up!
I have to write an opening paragraph on what a social structure is and i still can’t put it into words. Although this has cleared some of the fog. Thank you x
This is a great lecture. Is there a go to textbook that captures all of this. I’m not a sociology student but a PhD economics student that has a sociological focus too but couldn’t identify 1 textbook that is comprehensive enough
Thanks, Sinyorimparatore. In my judgment, there isn't a single textbook that accomplishes this for sociology. SOC 101 texts unfortunately don't communicate sociology as it's carried out by sociologists in their research. Instead, they read as fairly uniform "social studies" texts to accomplish general education goals.
thanks for the lecture
Nice video, man. I just pointed it out that the color of the chalk are not important.Anyway, I really appreciate your videos!
